The third season has been the best season of The Umbrella Academy yet, and fans who have already binged season 3 can’t wait to see what will be in store in season 4. Netflix is yet to announce the renewal of The Umbrella Academy, but we’re certain that it’s only a matter of time before this is confirmed. We’ll be keeping track of everything you need to know about The Umbrella Academy season 4, including, what to expect, production updates, casting news, trailers, and the Netflix release date.

The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix Original superhero-comedy-drama series created by Steve Blackman and based on the comics of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá.

Since 2019, The Umbrella Academy helped rewrite the script on the dysfunctional superhero family, providing subscribers with hours’ of binge-worthy entertainment.

Has The Umbrella Academy been renewed for season 4?

Official Netflix Renewal Status: Pending (Last Updated: 23/06/2022)

The third season of The Umbrella Academy only just landed on Netflix, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the streamer hasn’t announced the renewal for season four yet. The Umbrella Academy is still one of Netflix’s most popular original series, and rumor has it, that the series is already in active development, and renewal will be confirmed soon.

Once we have the viewing statistics for the third season we’ll add the relevant information to prove why The Umbrella Academy will be renewed for season 4.

The Umbrella Academy will be in direct competition with Stranger Things for the coveted number one spot in the global top ten list when the second volume of season 4 arrives on July 1st.

What to expect from The Umbrella Academy season 4

    The world’s best worst father

Sir Reginald Hargreeves is without a shadow of a doubt, one of the worst fathers in the known universe. Simply a means to a selfish end, Reginald’s only reason for the adoption of the children of the Umbrella Academy and Sparrow Academy was so that he could reset the universe in his image, and be reunited with his dead wife, Abigail.

Once his children realize that he’s alive, we can expect a less than a civil visit from the Hargreeves family. We still don’t know the full extent of what Reginald’s universe reset means for his children, but in true Reginald fashion, we expect they’ve been screwed over again.

Reginald and Abigail reunited at last, but at what cost? – Picture. Netflix

    A life without powers

With the removal of their powers, the Umbrella and Sparrow Academy are a significantly reduced threat to Reginald. Life will be dramatically different for the Hargreeves family, who without their powers will now experience a new form of vulnerability. This means no more bus ball for Klaus.

This also begs the question, in this world did Reginald adopt the Hargreeves children, and regardless of whether or not he did, this could mean that all of their respective mothers are still alive. After finally making a bond with Reginald, it was all for naught, so while Klaus will still be feeling the pain of betrayal, if he comes to the realization his mother could still be alive then he’ll be on a road trip to Pennsylvania immediately.

If some of the Hargreeves have a better life without their powers, such as Allison, it may take some convincing to return to their former lives.

    Timeskip?

In real life, Aidan Gallagher, the actor for Five is 18 years old and will turn 19 in September. By the time we expect the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy to arrive on Netflix, he’ll be almost 21 years old. Now, while Gallagher plays an extremely convincing 15-year-old, it won’t be long before he outgrows the look of one. A simple time-skip would allow the actor’s real-life growth to be worked into the story of Five looking older than a 15-year-old.

Included in the time-skip we’d get to see how drastically different the lives of the Hargreeves have changed. Diego and Lila will have had their baby, if Luther can find Sloane the newlyweds may be able to enjoy a few years of marital bliss, and Ben, clearly upset by the loss of his powers may begin his own plan to takedown Hargreeves.

    A fractured family

All of the Hargreeves have been through their own trials, tribulations, and trauma, and despite how dysfunctional they are, have still remained as a family. But in a brand new universe without powers, the choice to move on with their lives could fracture the relationships of the family who want their powers back.

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Release Date, Plot

Fans wanting more after the finale of 'The Umbrella Academy' Season 3, the showrunner hinted that he series could end after Season 4. Here's everything we know.

After somewhat of a lull in its release schedule, Netflix has two of its blockbuster series in full swing: Stranger Things, which debuts the final volume of its fourth season this Friday, and The Umbrella Academy, which dropped its brilliant third season last week.

We'll keep spoilers to a minimum here, for anyone catching up on the hours (and hours, and hours) of TV to be consumed. Of course, though, we already know that Stranger Things will call it quits after Season 5. But what about The Umbrella Academy? We have some good and bad news on that front. Series showrunner and creator Steve Blackman recently told TheWrap that he pitched Season 4 to Netflix, but it hasn't officially received a green light. That's the good news. The bad? Season 4 might be The Umbrella Academy's last.

"I think inevitably if we got a Season 4, it’s going towards an endgame,” Blackman said. “I think at a certain point, I’m not sure where we’d go after Season 4. We have to be careful. My plan for next year is not to continually tread on the same ground we have before. It’s a challenge to come up with a new way to subvert this storyline, and I think we have an idea how to do that. But I think if we got to Season Four, it would be a great ending for the run of the show. I’m not saying I couldn’t do more, but you know, I think that would be very satisfying for the audience, four seasons.”

Blackman later shared that he always "knew in my head what I thought the first four seasons are," and said that he'd be open to dreaming up another season's worth of super-powered action if "we’re so lucky to have more of that." Interestingly enough, as far as Season Four's story goes, it seems as if Blackman wants to strip our friends of their powers. “I want to pose to the viewer and the fan, ‘Would they be happier without their powers?’ I mean, all they do is complain about being who they are,” he said.

Are you prepared for a season of The Umbrella Academy that's light on superpowers? As long as the series keeps pushing forward, we'll take anything we can get. In the meantime, why not relive this season's "Footloose" dance battle?

    Spoilers below.

As we’ve come to anticipate from a show as cheeky as The Umbrella Academy—Netflix’s sci-fi drama adapted from the eponymous comics—season 3 ended on a note even more confounding than season 2’s head-scratcher. The upside: A fourth season is all but guaranteed, so there’s no need to fret over the (numerous) unanswered questions. The inverse: We’re gonna be stuck theorizing for a while.

Let’s recap. After returning from 1960s Dallas to the present day only to find their erstwhile father championing a new troupe of super-heroic cadets, the Umbrella Academy team join forces—sort of—with this so-called Sparrow Academy in an attempt to prevent another doomsday. But this new doomsday isn’t just the end of the world; it’s the collapse of the entire universe, courtesy of a “Kügelblitz” initiated by the Umbrella Academy’s impossible presence in an alternate dimension. (Long story short: In the Sparrow Academy’s reality, the Umbrella Academy’s parents were all killed before they were born, which means they can’t possibly exist. So the fact they do, in fact, exist—well, essentially it drives the universe so mad that it tries to eat itself. We all have existential crises now and again.)

By the time the Kügelblitz has gobbled up most of reality, including several Sparrow Academy members and an adoptive son named Stan (RIP), the Umbrella Academy is once more under the thumb of their dad, Sir Reginald Hargreeves. He coaxes them into a suicide mission at the Hotel Oblivion, where he’s convinced they can reset the universe. But once they’ve successfully fought off the hotel guardians, Reggie sucks up all the power from his children as he attempts to fuel an unexplained device. In retaliation, his daughter Allison slices his face in half. But his death doesn’t stop her from scooting a little too close to the machine, where she presses a Big Red Button and—maybe—resets the universe? We can’t be sure, because when she triggers said button, everyone makes it out alive...but somehow changed. Allison’s husband, Ray, and daughter, Claire, now exist in the same timeline—an impossibility given Ray was alive during the 1960s and Claire during the 2010s. But forget all that: Sloane is missing! The rest of the crew have lost their superpowers! And Ben is...Ben?

While we all rewind a few times to try and piece together what just happened, let’s take a peek at the future, shall we? Here’s everything we know about season 4 of The Umbrella Academy.

Will there be a season 4 of The Umbrella Academy?

Almost certainly—unless Netflix pulls...well, a Netflix, and cancels the series before it’s had the chance to resolve its arc. Given the show’s popularity, it seems likely The Umbrella Academy will get another chapter. (Not to mention there are rumors circulating that Netflix greenlit season 4 before season 3 had even hit screens.) Still, the streamer has made no official announcement as of yet.

    When will it come out?

Because Netflix has yet to officially renew the series, a release date for season 4 is purely conjecture at this point. But it’s not unreasonable to suspect season 4 wouldn’t arrive until 2023, given the numerous cast members participating and the significant visual effects involved. Season 2 dropped during summer 2020, with season 3 arriving almost two years later. Season 4 could come faster, since pandemic restrictions around production sets have eased, but it’s still going to take some time for us to find out what happened to Sloane.

What will season 4 be about?

The Umbrella Academy television series has loosely followed the comic books upon which it’s based, created and written by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. Both season 3’s Hotel Oblivion and Sparrow Academy are direct references to the titles of Way’s third and fourth Umbrella Academy collections, the latter of which is still forthcoming. Because Volume 4: The Sparrow Academy has yet to release in print, any speculation over how its contents might influence season 4 is moot.

Still, the season 4 finale itself gives us an idea of what’s to come: The Hargreeves siblings are suddenly powerless, which worries and titillates them in equal measure. A less-hairy Luther is hellbent on finding his wife, Sloane, while Diego and Lila seem eager to embark upon a babymoon. (We’ll see how long the thrill of living like normies lasts.) The others break off, as always, but they’ll soon discover that dear old dad’s “reset universe” is one in which, apparently, he controls everything. His name is on every skyscraper, and his partner—the one Luther was protecting on the moon, remember?—is back by his side. To the surprise of absolutely no one, it seems Reg might be some sort of evil madman? Season 4 might finally give us the Umbrella Academy versus Dictator Dad showdown we’ve been waiting for.

Who will be in the cast?

A reset universe means that just about anyone could make an appearance next season—including characters we thought deceased, such as Cazzie David’s Jayme or Justin Cornwell’s Marcus. (We barely even knew him!) We can also expect all the OG Hargreeves actors to return, including Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin H. Min.
