The series is going to be the show's last 😢

Stranger Things season four has officially landed on Netflix, and naturally we're already looking ahead to more instalments of the blockbuster sci-fi drama. Series four volume one dropped last Friday (27th May), while volume two is coming to Netflix on 1st July.

And if that's still not enough (of course it isn't), there's already plenty of talk about Stranger Things season five. The show's creators have confirmed that a fifth series of ST *is* happening, but that it will sadly be the show's last. Here's everything we know about season five so far...

What will happen in Stranger Things season 5?

With season four volume two still yet to be released, we'll have to wait a little while before we get a full picture of what might happen in season five. Still, The Duffer Brothers have revealed one key detail about the next season: that it will likely feature a time jump from season four.

"We learn a lot every time we make a [season]," Matt Duffer told TVLine. "We've learned a lot just working with all of our new actors and the ones that we've worked with for a long time over this year [making season 4], so I'm sure it'll change a little bit from that outline."

He continued, "I'm sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we'd have shot [seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that. So these are all discussions we're going to have with our writers when we start the room up. Believe it or not, we're still working on season 4. We’re trying to finish the final two episodes, they’re so massive."

Previously, the brothers also teased "more exciting stories" to come from the Stranger Things universe, while also nodding towards what we can expect to happen in the fifth series.

In their S5 announcement statement, the creators wrote: "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down."

Elsewhere, the creators teased details on the season five finale, telling SFX, "We know what the ending is."

Matt Duffer went on, "It's conceivable that it changes but I think it's unlikely because it's one of those endings that just feels, and has always felt, right. And it also feels sort of inevitable. Then when you come up with it, you're like, 'oh yeah well, that is absolutely what is has to be.'"

When was Stranger Things season 5 confirmed?

The Stranger Things creators confirmed that season five is indeed going ahead, in an open letter to fans published via Netflix in February. However, they also announced that series five would unfortunately mark the end of Stranger Things.

Ahead of season four's release, they wrote: "Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but – as you’ll soon see for yourselves – we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last."

Hey, all good things must come to an end and all that, right?

Netflix also appeared to hint towards the show's final season with an upside down (geddit?) sign reading, "Every ending has a beginning." Cryptic.

Who might star in Stranger Things season 5?

We'd expect all of our favourite Stranger Things cast members to be back on our screens for season five - providing that they're still alive at the end of season four, that is.

If everyone's alive and well, that'll include Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Noah Schnapp (Will), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Sadie Sink (Max), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Joe Keery (Steve), Priah Ferguson (Erica) and Winona Ryder (Joyce).

Fans are also hoping some of the new season four characters will return, like Eduardo Franco as Argyle (but maybe not Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna.)

When does Stranger Things 5 come out? Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have now confirmed that season 5 will be the end of the Netflix series.

Stranger Things fans, it's official – Stranger Things 5 has finally been confirmed as the final season of the Netflix series.

In a statement alongside the release date for Stranger Things 4, the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, said: "Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling towards our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last."

So, Stranger Things 5 has now been confirmed at Netflix – and the latest rumours also suggest that preparation has already begun on season 5.

But when will it be released? What will happen after the ending of Stranger Things 4? And who will be returning to the cast? Look, we know it's a loooong way off but, here's everything we know about Stranger Things season 5 so far...

WILL THERE BE A STRANGER THINGS 5?

Yes, Stranger Things 5 is happening – and it will be the final season.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer previously said: "Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story."

It sounds like the Duffer brothers are confident that they can deliver another iconic season of the show, which is a really great sign considering how incredible season 4 has been so far. (There's still another two episodes to come in Volume 2 as well.)

WHEN WILL STRANGER THINGS 5 BE RELEASED?

Well, that all depends on when the season begins filming. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, production on the fourth season was delayed massively. As a result, the release date – which was previously rumoured to be January 2021 – was pushed back to May 2022.

Filming on Stranger Things 4 wrapped in August/September 2021, and the first seven episodes were released 9 months later.

We'll know more once production begins on season 5. The good news is that the Duffer brothers already know what's going to happen in the story, but with filming and editing, it's possible that fans might not see Stranger Things 5 until late 2023 at the earliest. Here's hoping it doesn't take as long as last time!

WILL STRANGER THINGS 5 BE THE FINAL SEASON?

Yes. Stranger Things season 5 will be the final season of the show, but it won't be the end of the Stranger Things universe.

In statement discussing the future of the franchise and the season 4 release date, the Duffer brothers said: "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes."

In an interview with Collider, David Harbour also said that season 4 lays the groundwork for the ending of the show: "We're introducing new stuff, but we're also tightening and wrapping up in a certain direction. To make it have a clear, clean, specific, and definite ending at some point, which I can't really talk about.”

Producer Shawn Levy also told Collider in a separate interview that he and the Duffer brothers have the end in sight: "There is a plan and that too will be shared not quite as soon as a sense of when season four is coming out, but soon enough."

He continued: "I can say this. No one’s making it up as we go along and there is an endgame, if you will."

WILL THERE BE A TIME JUMP IN STRANGER THINGS 5?

As any fan of Stranger Things will know, every starts with a little bit of a time jump. The timeline jumped from November/December 1983 in season 1 to October 1984 in season 2, and then to July 1985 in season 3. Season 4 takes place in March 1986, eight months after the Battle of Starcourt.

But it now seems like season 5 might have an even bigger time jump than usual. The Duffer brothers told TVLine that a lengthy gap is almost unavoidable because of the ages of the younger actors: "I’m sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that."

There's no confirmation what year season 5 will take place in just yet, but if the show goes beyond March 1988 then it could coincide with the release of Beetlejuice which, of course, stars the real life superstar Winona Ryder.

While we still have two more episodes of season 4 of Stranger Things to go, arriving July 1, talk is already turning to the final season of the series, season 5, which will no doubt be even more of a spectacle.

One issue the show has had with its gaps between seasons, especially the very long one between season 3 and 4 due to COVID, is that its young cast has grown up very fast. As such, the Duffer Brothers have told TVLine that season 5 is almost certainly going to have a time jump forward.

“I’m sure we will do a time jump,” said Ross Duffer. “Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that.”

We have this current split within season 4 because they couldn’t quite finish production on the final, VFX-filled episode for one giant binge drop, so it’s not shocking they could also not film an entirely new season back to back with season 4.

How far of a time jump remains unclear. What’s happening in Hawkins does seem somewhat urgent, so there would have to be some sort of explanation as to why everything just…stopped for a few years, if that’s how long they’re planning. But at a certain point, yes, they do have to catch up to the fact that the kids who started out starring in the series are now six years older, given that we are a far cry from 2016 when the show originally aired. The current ages of the main cast members show how much they’ve aged out of the original set-up. Granted, this is Hollywood and older actors play younger all the time, but still:

Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler (age 27)

Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers (age 28)

Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley (age 23)

In short, you have the “one year out of high school” kids that are 30 or close to it, and the young cast that’s meant to be in early high school could all easily be in college at this point. Again, not all that wild for Hollywood, but most of these kids really look their age now. Does that mean a college-based season of Stranger Things is coming for season 5? I would kind of doubt that, given that there’s probably too much chaos to weave a significant amount of college-based storylines in there. My guess is they may skip ahead to high school graduation, which would be a couple of years, but we just don’t know yet.
