Perhaps the only thing that could feel worse than having dreams about your partner cheating on you is having it happen in real life. When a bad dream about cheating hits close to home, it can bring up all the same negative emotions, trust issues, and insecurities that we’d feel if we’d actually experienced the events in our waking life — even if there's no doubt in your conscious mind that your partner is true to you. But what does it mean to dream of your partner cheating?

Just because a lover is unfaithful to you in dreamland doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be suspicious of any indiscretions. In fact, dreams about being cheated on are among the most common types of nightmares: Studies have shown that nearly one in four Americans have had a dream about cheating or being cheated on. While it might feel like a horrible betrayal when the dream is still fresh, it doesn’t indicate that you’re picking up on any subtle signals.

"Dreams are not predictions — they are metaphors and symbols for conflicts that we are struggling to wrestle with, make sense of, and resolve," relationship expert and psychotherapist Dr. Fran Walfish tells Bustle. "How you feel in the dream is the key to how you are feeling in real life." That said, paying attention to how a cheating dream makes us feel is more important than fixating on the nitty-gritty details — as this could point toward repressed feelings that we’re struggling with in our waking life. It's important to reflect and try to identify the source of those feelings, as they can reveal a lot about our emotional state. And ultimately, you might find that they aren’t actually related to your partner at all.

So what does it mean when you dream about your partner cheating on you? Here are a few common cheating dream meanings — plus how to handle it if happens to you.

    You’re Having Trust Issues

While dreaming of an unfaithful partner doesn’t mean they’re untrustworthy in waking life, it could mean you’re struggling with some fears about the relationship or trust issues in general. "Bad dreams are hypothesized to be a form of emotional release, [so] dreaming about your partner cheating is likely related to a deep fear you have," certified sleep science coach Chris Brantner tells Bustle. “Maybe it's an actual fear of cheating or maybe it's some more abstract form of mistrust.”

Trust issues can take on many forms, so even if you’re not consciously worried about cheating in a relationship, it’s helpful to examine any other part of your life where you’re afraid to be vulnerable or honest. "Take a look inward and try to identify where your trust issues could stem from,” Brantner says. “That mistrust may have to do with your partner, [but] it could even be mistrust in yourself."

You’re Processing Other Big Feelings In Your Relationship

As crappy as cheating nightmares might feel in the moment, they can actually help you process feelings when you're upset, stressed, or adjusting to life changes.

"While nightmares can be anxiety-inducing, they can be good for you," Brantner says. "Your brain is able to sort through and process your day's activities [and] it's during this time that insights can be made and problem-solving can be honed for daytime performance.”

That said, cheating in a dream may simply be a symbol for any other struggle or stressor you’re experiencing with your partner — and the dream itself could be a way for your brain to work through the emotional ups, downs, and changes with your relationship. “Some experts believe that dreaming is ... a way for your brain to prepare for difficult encounters later on,” Brantner says. “You can think of dreaming almost as an overnight therapy."

You’re Feeling Betrayed In Other Parts Of Your Life

The betrayal and pain we feel when we have dreams of a partner cheating can be visceral. And while it’s important to pay attention to the feelings these dreams trigger, we should keep in mind that it could point to issues happening outside of the relationship.

“If you dream that your significant other is cheating and in the dream you feel betrayed, hurt, and angry, you need to ask yourself where in your current life you are feeling betrayed, hurt, and angry, too” Walfish says. “You may be surprised that it has nothing to do with your significant other. You may be feeling these emotions with a coworker or employer, or your mother!" Analyze where these feelings are showing up in your waking life, and don’t limit yourself to your romantic partnership. A cheating dream could indicate that there are other situations in your life that have left you feeling betrayed or frustrated.

Your Relationship May Need Better Communication

When you dream about your partner cheating, it might mean that you need to develop stronger communication skills within your relationship and open up about any beneath-the-surface fears. "[Cheating] dreams could be an indication that trust is deteriorating in your relationship," health and wellness consultant Caleb Backe tells Bustle. "You should address these feelings sooner than later, [as] they can put a great deal of strain on your relationship — you might start to stress and worry about things that aren’t true rather than dealing with them openly in a mature and honest way.”

18 Dreams About Cheating: What They Mean and What to Do

Having a cheating dream doesn’t necessarily mean your relationship is on the fritz. But your subconscious is likely telling you — or trying to work through — something. Here's what's typically to blame, common dream scenarios to explore, tips for talking about it, and more.

18 Reasons You’re Having Dreams About Cheating and What to Do

If you can dream it, you can do it… but you don’t have to

First off: Relax. Having a cheating dream doesn’t necessarily mean your relationship is on the fritz.

Still, according to certified dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg, “It’s something you should be curious about because every single thing in our dreams means something. Likely, your subconscious is telling you — or trying to work through — something.”

Because cheating dreams are one of the most common dreams people have, according to Loewenberg, we tapped her and Brooklyn-based psychotherapist Aimee Barr, LCSW, to bring you this cheating dream crib sheet.

It usually relates back to one of these underlying issues

While every cheating dream is as unique as the dreamer themselves, Loewenberg says most can be traced back to one of these three underlying issues.

    Dissatisfaction emotionally

Turns out it’s usually not about the sex! “It’s less about the physical union and more about the psychological or emotional union, that the sex represents,” says Loewenberg.

“The emotion you’re experiencing in the dream is very real and coming from a very real place,” she explains. Your plan of action is to discern what that emotion is exactly.

Common culprits? Feeling guilty, insecure, jealous, bored, anxious, angry, or overwhelmed.

    Dissatisfaction sexually

While most cheating dreams aren’t about the actual sex, some are. Dreams about infidelity can take place when there’s some unease about your sexual relationship.

Are you having sex? Are you happy with how often you’ve been having sex? Is there something you’ve been wanting to try in bed that your partner shut down? How about vice-versa?

Unresolved feelings about a past infidelity

If you were cheated on in the past, it’s really common to have dreams (nightmares?) about it happening again, according to Barr.

If your current partner did the deed, it’s an indication you need to continue rebuilding that trust. If a past partner cheated on you, you might be afraid of it happening again. (Barr notes a therapist can help you work through these fears).

    Exploring specific dreams

There’s no one-size-fits all meaning to your cheating dream, but Loewenberg says there are some common themes that emerge. Scroll down for more.

So, your partner cheated on you in your dream…

According to Loewenberg, “Dreaming your partner is cheating on you is far more common than dreaming of cheating on your partner.” So let’s start there.

Below, some common scenarios of your partner cheating that may play out in your dream state — plus what they might mean.

If your partner cheats with a stranger. You’re probably feeling cheated out of quality time and attention, says Loewenberg. “Have they been working more than normal? Have they been spending too much time online or playing World of Warcraft? Did they recently join a band?”If your partner cheats with an ex. You can be 1,000 percent confident that your partner loves you and will not leave you and still have this dream, according to Loewenberg. “It’s usually a sign that you’re jealous of something your ex has,” she says. Maybe it’s their sense of style or confidence. Maybe it’s that the ex knew your love in college, and you didn’t.If your partner cheats with someone you’re close to. Do your partner and this person get along? If not, the dream may signal that them getting along is important to you. Otherwise, Loewenberg says, think about what this person has that represents what you want. Financial stability? A good sense of humor? A baby?If your partner cheats with someone else you know IRL. Likely, this has nothing to with your partner. Instead, it has everything to do with “the other.” Again she asks, “What does this person have that you lack?”

OK, and what if you’re the cheater…

Still no need to freak out! Often, “dreams where you’re the cheater signal that you feel guilty or have betrayed yourself or compromised your values or beliefs in some way,” says Loewenberg. Ready to learn more?

If you’re cheating with a stranger. Here, you’re probably the one splitting your attention in too many directions. “What’s going on that’s reducing how much energy you have for your partner? Likely, you feel guilty about this,” says Loewenberg. If you’re cheating with an ex. Understandably this probably makes you feel especially guilty. Good news: Unless you actively want to get back with your ex in your conscious state, this doesn’t mean you actually want to/should go at it with your ex.

Instead, “think about what you’re still healing from that past relationship that you might be bringing into this relationship,” says Loewenberg. It might be an actual infidelity, or another betrayal or emotionally abusive comment or dynamic.

If you’re cheating with someone your partner is close to. Examine how their relationship with your partner makes you feel. Likely, your dream suggests a desire to get close with someone your partner is close to.

I am repeatedly dreaming that my boyfriend is cheating on me. What is the solution for this?

Answer (1 of 4): Proceed to the next level of your relationship with him. In my experience, doubts of infidelity creep in when the relationship is in a rout, and hence needs either oiling (you know what I mean) or moving a step further.

    It is not a dream.

It is a doubt somewhere in your subconscious mind that makes way to you. If you trust your guy, do not doubt him. And if you do then set out to know the truth. You might end up heart broken but you may as well feel good. Maybe it is all in your head and your doubts clear out after this. Seek the truth. You shall have the right path waiting for you.

It may just mean that you subconsciously fear that this may happen - you are afraid of losing him.

Just make your honest contribution to having a successful relationship : understanding, trust, communication, responsibility, love and then go by your gut feeling.

If u doubt yr yr boyfriend that means you do not love him . U are only attracted towards or may be just playing with him . If u would have loved yr boyfriend , then u can never imagine him cheating on u , and love stands on trust.and if u dont trust him u dont love him . So i say stop being in a rumour that u love him .u dont love him so my suggestion is to find your love and leave him as he may have found his love and that may be not u .

How come I keep having dreams my boyfriend cheated on me?

Same situation happened here before. I do believe that women just have that instinct to feel something is wrong out there.

My ex and I did have some wonderful time together. We laughed a lot, went to the gym together, great sex, travelled to some place I longed for. He took me to his family dinner and rented a house for us. And he was irresistibly sweet. He said" It's people like you who make the world spin." "I want to spend the rest of my life with you." I was so touched. But I just had some feeling that he was hiding something from me. Meanwhile the fact that he treated me well made me con

I can only tell you what I think.

A man in a woman's dream is symbolic of her masculine side. He's also symbolic of her executive function. It's this function that when in a good relationship with allows her to assert herself out into life. It allows her to use her personal power to advance her own best interests.

In a dream when the inner man has an affair with another woman the other woman is a shadow side of you. What the dreamer should do, but doesn't falls into the shadow. In other words you are not using your innate power to give more direction to your life.

I keep having these dreams about my partner cheating on me but I know that he won't actually do that. How can I prevent these dreams from occurring?

It is possible that somewhere in your own subconscious mind you are insecure and have a feeling that you are not good enough for them. If this dream was a one-time sudden thing, it could have meant something else. But as you have mentioned it is repetitive that means you have been thinking around this topic a lot recently. You need to relax your mind and calm down. You can practice meditation to calm your mind down. But if these thoughts keep popping up increasingly, go see a psychologist.
