CHRISTIAN BALE LOOKS UNHOLY IN NEW TRAILER FOR THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER
There are many wild reveals in the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, but few take the cake as the absolutely creepy Gorr the God Butcher.

THOR ODINSON IS RETIRING, but that doesn’t mean his final days as a superhero will be a bore. Or easy.
The new trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, which aired during the fourth game between the Celtics and the Heat in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, showed how Chris Hemsworth’s post-Endgame Thor went “from dad bod to god bod,” to Jane Foster (a returning Natalie Portman) hoisting the mighty hammer of Mjolnir to be the new God of Thunder.
That’s not all the trailer showed, however. From the new villain Gorr the God Butcher, played by an astonishingly creepy Christian Bale, to Russell Crowe’s once-rumored-now-confirmed role as Zeus, Love and Thunder is poised to be one heck of a farewell party for the self-proclaimed Strongest Avenger.
WHAT HAPPENED? — During Game 4 of the NBA finals between Miami and Boston, Marvel Studios unleashed the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, set for release on July 8.
Just as Boston showed dominance in the second quarter, the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer similarly dominated Marvel fans’ senses. Natalie Portman, back as the brainy Jane Foster since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World — which is referenced verbally by Thor, who said the last time he saw her was “eight years, seven months” — is visibly comfortable in her new role, as she’s seen effortlessly mowing down bad guys with the ease of a true veteran.
You can watch the trailer below.
It is still unclear how Jane Foster came to be worthy to lift Mjolnir, but surely that will be explained in the movie. It’s also apparent Jane was dusted in the Blip, as she thinks only a few years have passed since she last saw her ex-boyfriend. (I’m too lazy to do the math but Thor’s quip about “eight years, seven months” sounds like the right amount of time between November 2013 and July 2022.)
One of the most bizarre elements in the trailer, though, was a look at the movie’s villain.
Gorr the God Butcher, played by former Batman Christian Bale, is undeniably a character the likes of which heretofore never seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He clearly has a grudge against gods — all of them, no matter where they come from — and is seeking to end them all. It’s in his name, after all.
Gorr first debuted in Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić’s acclaimed Thor: God of Thunder series, an epic comic book series that is heavily inspiring Love and Thunder, especially in how Jane Foster takes over as Thor. There are also a few stills that are almost literally ripped from Ribić’s pages.

Like a more serious and not-underwritten Malekith, Gorr is lanky, lean, and downright creepy, with pale skin and oozing black lips.
“The only thing gods care about is themselves,” Gorr says in the trailer. “So this is my vow: All gods will die.” Looks like Love and Thunder won’t all be laughs and jokes.
Lastly, we can’t ignore Russell Crowe as Zeus, who didn’t account for Thor’s shredded physique to win over his own people.

THE INVERSE ANALYSIS — Thor: Love and Thunder looks like it’s keeping up with the same comedic tones that 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok brought to the table and revitalized Thor as his own franchise. (Not to mention Hemsworth’s own enjoyment in the role, as he once told Kevin Feige he felt like he was in “handcuffs” after The Dark World.)
But there are also some darker shades to the movie too, with Bale bringing an absolutely terrifying vision of Gorr the God Butcher to the screen.

After a fairly lengthy teaser, Thor: Love and Thunder has a full official trailer. This time, we get a glimpse of Christian Bale's viscerally named villain Gorr the God Butcher. Plus, there's another look at Natalie Portman's Jane Foster, aka Thor's ex-girlfriend who shockingly appears as Mighty Thor, costume, powers and muscles included. Portman didn't appear in the previous flick, Thor: Ragnarok.
The feel-good, comedy vibes of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe action-packed adventure come through in the official trailer. Check it out below.
The initial look at Thor: Love and Thunder didn't reveal much in the way of a hard plot for the fourth Thor flick, which sees the Avenger and former king of Asgard (Chris Hemsworth) suffer a mid-life crisis and go traveling with the Guardians of the Galaxy, led by the slightly peeved Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).
At some point, Thor faces Gorr the God Butcher, who lives up to his name. "All gods will die," he declares in the trailer.
Major moments in the trailer see Thor training to lose the weight he put on in Avengers: Endgame. Back in battle, he comes across a shocking sight: Jane Foster, bulked-up as the Mighty Thor. It's been eight years, seven months and six days since they've last seen each other. We also get a good look at Gorr's Voldemort-esque appearance -- he's pale, bald, cloaked and into the genocide of gods. And last but not least, we get our first look at Russell Crowe's gold chest-plated Zeus.
"The film finds Thor on a journey unlike anything he's ever faced -- a quest for inner peace," reads Marvel's official synopsis. "But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who -- to Thor's surprise -- inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher's vengeance and stop him before it's too late."
Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie takes over Asgard's throne and Taika Waititi, who returns to direct after Thor: Ragnarok, is also back on screen as the lovable but clueless Korg.

Marvel has released another trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, and while it offers closer looks at Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir as the new Mighty Thor and Russell Crowe as Zeus, there's also a brand new face in this new footage. We've finally gotten our first real look at Christian Bale's villain, Gorr the God Butcher.
Gorr's god-slaying handiwork has been on display in both trailers, with Thor and Korg beholding the remains of Falligar the Behemoth in a spot-on recreation from the Marvel Comics. (See below.)
The official plot synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder reveals the film "finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late."
But we don't need an epic quest "to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance" because we've read the Marvel Comics that Thor: Love and Thunder drew its inspiration from!
Read on for a full breakdown of Gorr's background and role in the Thor franchise, as well as some theories on how he and Jane Foster fit into the latest Thor sequel.

Gorr Explained: The Basics
There's a reason Gorr is called "The God Butcher." This vindictive alien is basically a serial killer who only targets gods. Once a happy, humble family man, Gorr was forced to watch his family taken from him. Because his prayers for salvation went unanswered, Gorr decided that all gods are unworthy of the love and devotion they receive from their worshipers. To prove it, he's devoted his long life to systematically ridding the universe of all gods. That includes Thor, the one god who once tussled with the God Butcher and lived to tell the tale.

Gorr's Powers and Abilities
On his own, Gorr is an alien with no remarkable abilities to speak of, aside from a well-honed talent for torture and interrogation. But after coming into possession of an ancient weapon called All-Black the Necrosword, Gorr gained immortality and a host of other powers like enhanced strength, speed, durability, regeneration and flight. Gorr can even use the sword to create razor-sharp constructs or living minions he calls Black Berserkers.
Gorr's main weakness is that he's dependent on his sword for his power. That, along with his deeply buried self-loathing streak, proved to be his undoing.

Gorr: Origin and Background
Gorr is a relatively recent addition to Thor's rogues gallery, first appearing in 2012's Thor: God of Thunder #1. That series marks the start of writer Jason Aaron's long and highly influential Thor saga (a saga which also deals with Jane Foster inheriting the mantle of Thor).

Gorr served as the main villain for the first 11 issues of Thor: God of Thunder. The series establishes Gorr as a once ordinary alien driven to madness by the deaths of his wife and children. He's then exiled by his fanatically religious tribe after denying the existence of gods. But after wandering the wastelands and witnessing a battle between two powerful gods, Gorr comes to an epiphany. He decides that if gods do exist but fail to respond to the prayers of their worshipers, then they don't deserve to live.
After claiming All-Black the Necrosword from the body of the loser, Gorr gains incredible powers and begins a long crusade to murder every god in the universe. That quest eventually brings him to Earth during the Middle Ages, where he captures a young Thor and tortures him for information about the gods of Asgard. Thor escapes and wounds Gorr, believing himself to have ended the threat permanently.
Instead, Gorr resurfaces in the present, forcing Thor to unite with his young, Viking Age self and an older Thor from the far future to battle an existential threat to all gods. Gorr enslaves numerous gods and forces them to build a doomsday weapon called the God-Bomb, one which would detonate across time and eliminate every god in one stroke. However, Gorr proves to be his own worst enemy. He creates a construct of his dead son Agar, who denounces his father's cruelty and labels him "the god of hypocrisy." Agar gives Thor the power to withstand the God-Bomb blast, and Thor uses the power of two Mjolnirs to end the threat of Gorr once and for all.
