Which characters die in Stranger Things 4 Volume 2?

    by Andrés Aquino

The massive Netflix show is about to wrap its fourth season, with many speculating some key characters could run out of luck.

    Updated on July 1st, 2022

Stranger Things has slowly but surely turned into one of Netflix's most iconic properties, with the first part of the fourth season becoming their most-watched English-language show during June.

Hype is at an all-time high for the conclusion of the story that's seen Eleven, Mike, Hoppe, and the rest of the gang go their separate ways while dealing with one of the biggest threats Hawkins has seen: Vecna.

Death in Stranger Things is common, with plenty of characters being killed off across multiple seasons. However, with stakes higher than ever, fans wonder if any members of the main cast will kick the bucket when Stranger Things Season 4: Volume 2 premieres.

If you're reading this, we'll assume you're all caught up on the status quo of Stranger Things characters. With that said, Netflix has kept a very tight leash to avoid any spoilers. Still, that hasn't stopped users from speculating who could die.

The biggest candidate in many people's eyes, and much to the dismay of the entire fanbase, is Steve Harrington. The affable, sometimes whiny but always loyal character had a rough going during Season 4: Volume 1, and while he's no stranger to taking a beating, it might not end up well for Steve this time.

The Duffer Brothers have stated ad-nauseam how they sometimes regret killing off characters before they have time to shine or develop into something more. In Season 4 alone, they admitted to pulling the trigger on Chrissy too soon after seeing how much chemistry she had with Eddie.

As for Steve, his faith was sealed during Season 1 before the showrunners decided to keep him alive for future installments of the show. The decision proved correct as Harrington quickly became a fan favorite, stealing the show on more than one occasion thanks to his amazing back and forth with the main cast of characters until he eventually became one himself.

As we've mentioned, if you are looking to get the story spoiled, you're out of luck. However, if anything gets past Netflix's ninjas, we'll be sure to update the title accordingly.

Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 spoilers ahead.

Stranger Things season four was bigger and darker than ever before, with that epic volume one finale twist raising fan expectations (and concerns) to new heights.

Inspired by the Night King from Game of Thrones, Vecna is the show's most menacing antagonist yet, exacting his villainy by stalking traumatised teens with nightmares before slaughtering them in a truly horrifying manner.

The revelation of Vecna as test subject 001 aka Henry Creel in the volume one finale sets up volume two for an action-packed battle between the Hawkins misfits and the tentacled creature, but it also has fans worried about the fate of some of their favourite characters.

    NETFLIX

After all, it's not as if the Duffer brothers have been prepared to ease that worry. In fact, they've only increased it by warning us that we have every reason to be concerned.

"I don't really want to say, but I would be concerned about the characters going into volume two, for sure," Ross Duffer explained.

"I hope that that is sort of the sense, because it is a darker season and the kids are no longer kids. And there's sort of an ominous feeling that things might not go well. Now, whether they do [die] or not, you'll have to watch."

With that unfortunately being said, here are the characters we think are most likely to die in volume two, and those who could possibly be on the chopping block.

    Most likely to cop it:

    Dr Brenner

    NETFLIX

First up is Dr Martin Brenner. Season four saw the return of Eleven's 'Papa' after he had been presumed dead for the previous two seasons, and it's safe to say his return was not a welcome one.

After Brenner forces El into reliving her traumatic past to regain her powers, it looks like she's going to be more powerful than ever. So it wouldn't surprise us if she kills her first foe so she can escape his clutches and defeat Vecna (again).

After all, episode eight is titled 'Papa', suggesting the conflict between El and Brenner is far from over.

It's also possible that Brenner will go through some sort of redemption arc before being killed off (see Billy in season three). Lt Sullivan, as we know, believes El is the perpetrator of the heinous murders in Hawkins and is on the hunt for her.

In the volume two trailer, it appears as though Sullivan has managed to track her down as soldiers raid the underground bunker. Perhaps Brenner will experience a sudden surge of empathy and sacrifice himself to save Eleven.

Either way, Brenner has served the purpose of his return which was to help El regain her powers, so it makes sense that his arc will come to an end in volume two.

    Dr Owens

Dr Sam Owens has been a recurring character since season one, and in season three, he helps Hopper to officially adopt Eleven.

It was therefore surprising to both El and viewers when this supposed ally duped her into going to the underground bunker to team up with Brenner.

Despite this betrayal, it's clear Owens cares for El. Similar to Brenner, then, it could be that Owens dies helping El escape.

    Murray

    NETFLIX

Murray Bauman's soft side was shown to us in season three when his character was elevated to a more prominent role and formed an unlikely friendship with Russian scientist Alexei.

By season four, he was more than willing to risk his life and fly to Soviet Russia with Joyce to save Hopper, showing off some pretty impressive karate moves while he was at it.

While we hope that the trio survives, we can't help but think that it would be too good to be true for all three of them to escape Russia unscathed.

    ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW

It's unlikely that Hopper would be killed off again, and there would be a riot if Joyce was killed just as she and Hop are reunited.

Unfortunately, that leaves Murray. The trailer shows him delightedly wielding a flamethrower, so maybe the 'Bald Eagle' will go out with all guns (literally) blazing.

    Jonathan

    NETFLIX

We're sorry to say it, especially to those #Jancy shippers out there, but we don't think things will go well for Jonathan in volume two.

Jonathan has been around since day one and was the glue that held the Byers family together following Will's disappearance and Bob Newby's untimely demise *sobs*.

However, the character was largely sidelined during the latest season and was, for lack of a better word, pointless.

His only purpose was to provide comic relief, get stoned with his new friend Argyle and complain about his long-distance relationship with Nancy.

Fans have been very concerned about Stranger Things season four volume two over their suspicions that some fan favourite characters might be killed while trying to stop Vecna. And… they weren’t wrong.

WATCH: What did you think of volume II?

    Papa AKA Martin Brenner

And thus, the world’s weirdest father and daughter dynamic was ended. Dr Brenner wasn’t the best Papa in the world, being that he experimented on Eleven, had her mother killed and kept El in a prison - but he did care about her, bizarrely, in his own way. The Doctor is shot and killed while trying to get Eleven to safety after his secret compound is discovered.

    Jason Carver

Oh no. Not Jason. Nah just kidding, the High School jock with righteous and misguided anger towards Eddie was killed as a result of Vecna finally breaking through to Hawkins from the Upside Down. After being beaten to a pulp by Lucas (rightly so, we might add), Jason was disintegrated as the other world broke through into Hawkins. I guess that’s what happens when you get unreasonably obsessed with a Dungeons and Dragons club.

    Eddie Munson

Okay, this one hurt. After Eddie the Banished, ashamed of himself for running away after Chrissy was murdered, has a chance to be the hero in the Upside Down as the gang hatches a plan to stop Vecna, he sacrifices himself to stop Vecna’s murderous bats from getting to Nancy, Jonathan and Robin - resulting in a heartbreaking goodbye with Dustin, who goes on to tell Eddie’s heartbroken uncle that he was a hero. We’re not crying, you are.

    Max Mayfield

*Dry heaves*. We’ve included Maxine in this one because she really did die for a minute, and it was an unbelievably harrowing scene - so much so that Sadie Sink should have that Emmy nomination in the bag. In the finale, Vecna begins to kill Max, only for Eleven to help save her in the last second, leaving her with grave injuries and dying in Lucas’ arms. However, El somehow manages to bring her back - only for her to be in a coma with even El not being able to reach her.
