Bitcoin gets all the headlines when people talk about cryptocurrencies, but there are literally thousands of other options when it comes to these digital currencies. In fact, cryptos that aren’t Bitcoin are usually considered an “also ran” – what are called “altcoins,” or alternatives to Bitcoin.

While Bitcoin may have been the first major cryptocurrency to hit the market – it debuted in 2009 – many others have become highly popular, even if not quite as large as the original.

Here are the largest cryptocurrencies by the total dollar value of the coins in existence, that is, the market capitalization, or market cap. (Data is from CoinMarketCap.com, as of June 30, 2022.)

    Largest cryptocurrencies by market cap

    1. Bitcoin (BTC)

    Price: $19,095Market cap: $364 billion

As the harbinger of the cryptocurrency era, Bitcoin is still the coin people generally reference when they talk about digital currency. Its mysterious creator — allegedly Satoshi Nakamoto — debuted the currency in 2009 and it’s been on a roller-coaster ride since then. However, it wasn’t until 2017 that the cryptocurrency broke into popular consciousness.

    2. Ethereum (ETH)

    Price: $1,032Market cap: $125 billion

Ethereum — the name for the cryptocurrency platform — is the second name you’re most likely to recognize in the crypto space. The system allows you to use ether (the currency) to perform a number of functions, but the smart contract aspect of Ethereum helps make it a popular currency.

    3. Tether (USDT)

    Price: $1.00Market cap: $66 billion

Tether’s price is anchored at $1 per coin. That’s because it is what’s called a stablecoin. Stablecoins are tied to the value of a specific asset, in Tether’s case, the U.S. Dollar. Tether often acts as a medium when traders move from one cryptocurrency to another. Rather than move back to dollars, they use Tether. However, some people are concerned that Tether isn’t safely backed by dollars held in reserve but instead uses a short-term form of unsecured debt.

    4. USD Coin (USDC)

    Price: $1.00Market cap: $56 billion

Like Tether, USD Coin is a stablecoin pegged to the dollar, meaning that its value should not fluctuate. The currency’s founders say that it’s backed by fully reserved assets or those with “equivalent fair value” and those assets are held in accounts with regulated U.S. institutions.

    5. Binance Coin (BNB)

    Price: $214.21Market cap: $35 billion

Binance Coin is the cryptocurrency issued by Binance, among the largest crypto exchanges in the world. While originally created as a token to pay for discounted trades, Binance Coin can now be used for payments as well as purchasing various goods and services.

    6. Binance USD (BUSD)

    Price: $1.00

    Market cap: $18 billion

Binance USD is a dollar-backed stablecoin from top crypto exchange Binance in partnership with Paxos. Binance USD was launched in 2019 and is regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services. BUSD runs on top of the Ethereum blockchain.

    7. XRP (XRP)

    Price: $0.318Market cap: $15 billion

Formerly known as Ripple and created in 2012, XRP offers a way to pay in many different real-world currencies. Ripple can be useful in cross-border transactions and uses a trust-less mechanism to facilitate payments.

    8. Cardano (ADA)

    Price: $0.4476Market cap: $15 billion

Cardano is the cryptocurrency platform behind ada, the name of the currency. Created by the co-founder of Ethereum, Cardano also uses smart contracts, enabling identity management.

    9. Solana (SOL)

    Price: $32.21Market cap: $11 billion

Launched in March 2020, Solana is a newer cryptocurrency and it touts its speed at completing transactions and the overall robustness of its “web-scale” platform. The issuance of the currency, called SOL, is capped at 480 million coins.

    10. Dogecoin (DOGE)

    Price: $0.06523

    Market cap: $9 billion

Originally created as a joke after the run-up in Bitcoin, Dogecoin takes its name from an internet meme featuring a Shiba Inu dog. Unlike many digital currencies limiting the number of coins in existence, Dogecoin has unlimited issuance. It can be used for payments or sending money.

    11. Dai (DAI)

    Price: $1.00

    Market cap: $7 billion

Dai is an Ethereum-based stablecoin issued by MakerDAO that is linked to the value of the U.S. Dollar. Dai helps facilitate crypto-collateralized lending using the Maker Protocol. The stablecoin is available on a number of centralized and decentralized exchanges.

    12. Polkadot (DOT)

Top 5 Cryptocurrencies by Market Cap

In the ever-shifting world of digital currencies, these coins and tokens have come out on top.

Top 5 Cryptocurrencies by Market Cap

By NATHAN REIFF Updated June 25, 2019

Bitcoin, the leading digital currency by market capitalization, has grown in value by more than 10 times at certain points over the past year, but it has also seen significant plunges in value. Still, a number of cryptocurrencies have managed to come out on top. (See also: Bitcoin Price Takes Backstage as Altcoins Rally.)

To say that 2017/2018 has been a big year for digital currencies would not begin to do the industry justice. In the span of just months, digital currencies skyrocketed in value, interest, and number, only to see their values plummet once again, before leveling off. There are new digital currencies being launched to investors every week, and a hoard of blockchain-related startups have followed in their footsteps, often bolstered by major fundraising efforts through ICOs.

In the world of virtual currencies, fortunes tend to move up and down quickly. The space is dominated by volatility above many other factors. These are the largest digital currencies by market cap as of mid-July 2018.

    1. Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency and it remains the go-to leader of the space. As of this writing, the market capitalization of the world's top digital currency is more than $125 billion, with a price per coin of more than $7,305.

There are roughly 17.1 million BTC in circulation, according to coinmarketcap.com. This is all in spite of earlier speculation about a Flippening, in which other digital currencies would permanently take over the No. 1 spot. That has yet to transpire. (See more: "The Flippening": Will Ethereum Take Bitcoin's Place?)

    2. Ethereum

Ethereum, the digital token which prompted the rise of the initial coin offering (ICO), comes in second on our list of cryptocurrencies by market cap. It is significantly smaller than bitcoin; the current market cap is just shy of $50 billion, with a trading price of about $500 per token. There are just over 100.7 million ETH tokens in circulation as of this writing.

    3. Ripple

The No. 3 slot goes to the much-hyped Ripple, with a total market capitalization of more than $19.8 billion. Unlike the top two digital currencies (as well as the one directly following it), the price of each XRP token is very small. As of this writing, it's just over 50 cents per token. On the other hand, the total number of XRP in circulation is quite high. There are over 39 billion tokens in circulation now.

    4. Bitcoin Cash

Bitcoin cash, the spin-off of bitcoin which launched as a result of a hard fork, comes in fourth in our ranking. The total market cap of this digital currency is about $14.5 billion, with a market price of $843 per coin and a total circulation of just over 17.2 million BCH.

    5. EOS

Rounding out the top five is EOS, with a market cap of $7.83 billion and a total circulation of more than 896 million tokens.
