In a dystopian 2050, fighter pilot Adam Reed steals his time jet and escapes through time on a rescue mission to 2018. However, he accidentally crash-lands in 2022 instead where Adam meets his 12-year-old self who is struggling with the recent death of their father Louis in a car accident. Adam reluctantly enlists his younger self's help to repair his jet and reveals that he is looking for his wife, Laura, who was supposedly killed in a crash while on a mission to 2018.
Adam is being chased by Maya Sorian, the leader of the dystopian world and her lieutenant Christos who attempt to apprehend Adam and take him back to 2050. The Adams are rescued by Laura who reveals that she had escaped an assassination attempt on her and was left stranded in the past. Laura had learned that Sorian had traveled back in time and altered the past in order to give herself control of time travel and the future.
Laura urges Adam to travel back to 2018 and destroy time travel, which was created by his father Louis, in order to set things right and save the future. Sorian attacks and Laura sacrifices herself so that the two Adams can escape. Chased by Sorian and with only enough power left for one time jump, Adam and his younger self jump back to 2018.
In 2018, the two Adams attempt to enlist Louis' help, but he refuses out of concern for the scientific impact on the timestream. The younger Adam confronts his future self about his bitterness and anger and realizes that the source of it is his lingering pain over their father's death. As the two launch an attack to destroy Louis' particle accelerator, Louis changes his mind and joins the mission, having them instead retrieve the hard drive containing the only copy of his algorithm that enables time travel.
A battle erupts between the Adams, Louis, Sorian, her younger self, Sorian's soldiers and Christos, resulting in the particle accelerator overloading. Sorian attempts to shoot Louis with an armor-piercing bullet, but the magnetic field of the accelerator instead diverts the round, causing it to kill the younger Sorian, erasing the future Sorian from existence as the Reeds flee.
With time travel destroyed and the future set right, Louis chooses not to learn of his own fate and enjoys a game of catch with both versions of his son before the Adams are returned to their own times. In 2022, Adam lets go of his bitterness and anger and reconciles with his mother whom he has been distant with ever since Louis' death. Years later, a much happier adult Adam meets Laura for the first time in a situation mirroring their first meeting in the original timeline.
Ryan Reynolds as Adam Reed, a time pilot in 2050 who risks his life to try and uncover the truth behind his wife's disappearance.
Walker Scobell as young Adam Reed, a bullied 12-year-old in 2022 who suffers from asthma.
Isaiah Haegert as a younger 8-year-old Adam in 2018.
Mark Ruffalo as Louis Reed, Adam's father and a brilliant quantum physicist who wrote the algorithm necessary for controlled time travel. Reed has been dead by 2022 and is alive in 2018.
Jennifer Garner as Ellie Reed, Adam's mother. Garner also portrays her younger self in 2018.
Catherine Keener as Maya Sorian, a businesswoman who funded Louis' research and later took advantage of his death to monopolize it for her own benefit and create a future where she is the most powerful woman in the world.

We Answered All Your Burning Questions About ‘The Adam Project’
Can a wound really fart?
By John DiLillo March 14, 2022
Picture this: You’re just an average kid, going about your business, when suddenly, your future self crash-lands in your backyard in a spaceship and storms into your house. Dude’s got a bullet wound, too. He’s you. He’s not you. It’s confusing all around. You’d have a lot of questions, right? That’s the situation Adam Reed (Walter Scobell) is faced with in . Like any time-travel movie, this is a story loaded with convoluted semi-science and outrageous plot twists. But just as the older Adam (Ryan Reynolds) is there to answer his younger self’s burning questions, we are here to answer your OMGs and WTFs. Take a plunge into the wormhole with us below.
Where was the movie filmed?
is close to star Ryan Reynolds’ heart, with its themes of fatherhood, grief and growing up. The setting is no exception: Those gorgeous mountain vistas were captured in Reynolds’ home of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Would your dog really be able to recognize a 30-years-older you?
Since your average dog only lives about 10-13 years, this is a difficult question. But let’s suspend our disbelief, because the odds are on Fido’s side: Dogs have an olfactory memory, meaning they can recall scents even after that smell is no longer with them. Depending on how much your smell changes, a dog would still be able to recognize its owner, even after a long absence. For more information, we reached out to Clive D.L. Wynne, director of the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University.
“That’s a fairly easy yes, ” Wynne tells Tudum. “Within the limit that, of course, it’s never been observed and never could be. But, certainly, dogs have recognized people after gaps of many years. Charles Darwin reported that his dog recognized him after he came back from four years away traveling around the world on the .” And that was only Darwin’s -biggest scientific discovery!
Can a wound really fart?
The future of is full of whizzing hovercraft and light saber-esque gadgets, but perhaps one of its most fantastical elements is quite a bit simpler. When middle-aged Adam first arrives in his younger self’s home, he’s nursing a wound that has a… peculiar quality. “That’s weird,” he says. “It farts when I cough.” It’s a line Reynolds improvised, but let’s be fair: Ryan Reynolds is not a doctor. Can a wound really fart? Tudum reached out to multiple professed “fart experts” but received no comment. But forensic pathologist and author Dr. Judy Melinek tells us this particular wound doesn’t sound like the flatulent kind.
“From a physiological standpoint, wounds don’t normally make sounds unless there’s some air trapped behind them, and then, if he moves, the air will get released,” Melinek says. “So, the only circumstance I can think of where a wound would make a farting or whooshing sound, releasing some sort of air — because that’s what usually makes sounds, the movement of air — would be if [a] bullet or projectile penetrated... an air-filled cavity.” Such wounds would be potentially lethal within minutes, so, from a scientific point of view, this wound ain’t farting. “That’s the disconnect for me,” Melinek continues. “It’s not that the wound wouldn’t make a sound; wounds can make a sound. But, if they do, that usually suggests that air has entered into a cavity where it’s not supposed to be.” In other words: Watch out for farting wounds.
Is a DNA lock possible?
Reynolds’ middle-aged version of Adam flies a futuristic jet that will only activate for a user who passes its DNA-encoded identity test. When the jet forbids him from flying with a wound, that means the only person who can access it is his younger self. This type of technology technically already exists, but it’s quite a bit more invasive than the film portrays, requiring a physical sample. A more realistic version of the DNA lock might require Ryan Reynolds to spit on it every time he unlocked it.
What would happen if you killed your younger self in the past?
This is what nerds refer to as the “Grandfather Paradox,” meaning that if you traveled back in time and killed your grandfather, you would cease to exist and there would be no one to kill your grandfather. Scientists, science fiction writers and all manner of other overthinkers have pointed to this paradox as evidence that time travel is impossible, but quantum physicists may have already solved it. The solution sees a grandchild born with a one-half probability of killing their grandfather, and their grandfather born with a one-half probability of being killed by their grandchild, which apparently puts you mathematically in the clear. Or, in slightly simpler terms, alternate universes, anyone?

Netflix’s The Adam Project stars Ryan Reynolds as a time traveler from 2050 named Adam Reed who accidentally flies his quantam jet into his own childhood backyard in 2022 and reunites with his 12-year-old self, played by newcomer Walker Scobell. The two Adams set out to find their dad, who died in 2018, and so into the jet they go to find him, back in time.
The film is vague about where young Adam and his mom Ellie (played by Jennifer Garner) actually live, depicting a gorgeous but vague version of the Pacific Northwest. They’re close to the ocean, and their yard is a lush, forest-like wonderland. As the Adams travel together in search of their father, Louis (Mark Ruffalo), they trek through woods and beachy backdrops that are beautiful to look at, and the film has audiences wondering, where are these beautiful locations, anyway?
Where Was The Adam Project Filmed?
The majority of The Adam Project was filmed in and around Vancouver, Canada, which happens to be Ryan Reynolds’ hometown. (His social media handle is a nod to the city: @vancityreynolds.) Locations such as Jack Poole Plaza, Park Royal Shopping Mall, and local pub The Blarney Stone appear in the film, as do Lynn Canyon Park and Kitsilano Beach, for some of the outdoor scenes. (This interactive map features every location in Vancouver that appears in the film.)
The Reed’s family home and the backyard however, were built on a set in a Vancouver hockey arena that became a sound stage used on the film. Production designer Claude Paré explained in press materials for the film that “We wanted the interior of the home to look like a split-level dream house you’d typically find in the Pacific Northwest.” But not all of the yard is actually real or filmed on location, some of the lush yard was digitally altered with VFX.
Paré also explained that the interior of the Sorian Labs featured in the film were built just for the movie too, but that they were inspired by a real location, CERN, the nuclear research facility in Switzerland. “Its aesthetic has always fascinated me. I took the most well-known part of the complex — the Large Hadron Collider — and made it vertical instead of horizontal. Some people will question the practicality of it all, but when you can create a machine that doesn’t actually have to work, it’s fun to cobble the elements together for their looks only,” he said.
The Adam Project is out now on Netflix.
