Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the latest of many anime theatrical releases. As the anime industry continues to skyrocket in popularity, becoming just as mainstream as any other film genre, it’s no surprise that the Jujutsu Kaisen film is coming to theaters in North America, as well as across the globe.

For those who don’t know, Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the biggest anime in the world, debuting in fall 2019. The series follows Yuji Itadori, a teenager who becomes a Jujutsu sorcerer, training and learning how to battle against these demons and spirits. The film, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, will not follow Itadori and his friends but instead focus on a new character named Yuta Okkotsu. Image via Crunchyroll

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will hit theaters in North America on March 18, 2022. The film will be available in 1,500 theaters across the country with both Japanese sub and English dub. We don’t currently have a release date for the U.K., but we know it will be coming to UK cinemas later in the year.

Will Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Be Available on Streaming?

As of now, there is no date for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 coming to streaming. We do know that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train came to FUNimation a few months after its theatrical release, but in contrast, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission has yet to be made available on any streaming platform. In the case of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with the streaming rights in the coming months.

    Demon Slayer: Mugen Train

    Image via Funimation

    Streaming on FUNimation and Crunchyroll.

Demon Slayer is by far one of the biggest franchises in the world, and Mugen Train is proof of that. This film takes us on an adventure with Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zinetsu as the boys board the Mugen Train and battle one of the fiercest demons they’ve seen thus far. Joining them on this mission is Kyōjurō Rengoku, a legendary Hashira.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is one of the best anime movies of the last decade. The action is incredible, the story is emotional, and it continues to flesh out Demon Slayer's world even more. I can’t recommend this film enough, but to truly appreciate its greatness, watch the movie after Demon Slayer Season 1.

    My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising

    Image via Funimation

Available for purchase on all digital platforms.

The second film in the My Hero Academia series, Heroes Rising, takes Deku, Bakugo, and the rest of Class 1-A on the adventure of a lifetime. Our main characters are forced to defend a small group of islanders from the power of a new villain, Nine, as he tries to steal the quirk of a young child.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising is a film that challenges Deku and Bakugo’s relationship as the two fight to protect their friends and the civilians of this island. The film features terrific battles, intense character moments, and the best animation in the My Hero Academia franchise. Just know that to get the most out of this film, you have to watch up to Season 4 of My Hero Academia’s anime.

    Dragon Ball Super: Broly

    Image via Toei Animation

Available for purchase on all digital platforms.

Dragon Ball is the franchise that just keeps on coming. After numerous anime adaptations, countless episodes, and over ten feature films, we were graced with arguably the best one yet, Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

This film takes place after The Tournament of Power, and things are relatively peaceful, but that all changes when a new Saiyan warrior arrives on the scene. Together, Goku and Vegeta have to face off against their most formidable opponent yet. This film takes place after the end of Dragon Ball Super, so if you’re willing to give it a watch, check it out right after DBS.

    The Last: Naruto the Movie

    Image via Toho

    Streaming on Crunchyroll and FUNimation.

As the title suggests, The Last is the final chapter in the Naruto film franchise, at least the final film focusing on Naruto himself. This film sees Naruto as an adult as he deals with romance, his duties as a Shinobi, as well as one of the most challenging threats he’s ever faced.

Less than three months after its debut in Japan, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 has flown over multiple oceans to land in theaters across North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania starting today. Of course, it's as big and awesome as the JUJUTSU KAISEN series — but what exactly is "0," and why is it a huge deal?

Here are five things you need to know before you see JUJUTSU KAISEN 0!

    1. It's A Prequel Film

Before JUJUTSU KAISEN cursed its way into Shonen Jump in 2018, mangaka Gege Akutami published a prototype called JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 in Jump GIGA a year prior, and that's just when its story takes place in relation to the main series. Maki, Inumaki, and Panda are all first-years at Jujutsu High when they meet Yuta Okkotsu, the film's central protagonist that most of you will also be meeting for the first time.

The climax of the film, however, specifically takes place on December 24 (the same as the film's release date in Japan), which means one very important thing — JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 is also a Christmas movie.

    2. Anyone Can See It

Well, that's not quite true if you're under the recommended age rating, but it is a film you can fully enjoy without having seen the anime series. Yuta is just as unfamiliar with curses and how to fight them as Itadori was, which means there's a fresh induction into the world of Jujutsu sorcery and its inhabitants. But don't take it from me, take it from my uninitiated partner that I brought along: "The only thing that confused me was the panda."

There are plenty of cameos and nods for the seasoned fan, too, which also serve to further tee-up new fans to check out the original series. So bring your friend, your parent, your partner, or even your second cousin once removed to share in all the action-horror goodness, because it's a real treat.

    3. It Has A Superstar Main Cast

Being the cool new kids on the block, Yuta and Rika bring two more ultra-talented voices into JUJUTSU KAISEN's already stacked cast list: Megumi Ogata and Kana Hanazawa.

Ogata brought her voice acting A-game in 2021, voicing the protagonists of Japan's top two highest-grossing films of the year — Yuta Okkotsu in JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 and Shinji Ikari in Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. Kana Hanazawa — who you'll know as Angel in Angel Beats!, Mayuri in Steins;Gate, Nadeko in Bakemonogatari, and a hundred other fan-favorite characters — took on a rather different role as a monstrous behemoth, while still bringing out the girlish charm we're used to hearing.

Together, they are the pillars of JUJUTSU KAISEN 0's intense but sentimental story about changing one's self for the better and pure love in a cursed world.

    4. There's An End-Credits Scene

A decade and a half of MCU films tells us not to leave the theater until after the final credits roll, yet there are always early leavers just the same. No need to pull out your phone at the end to look up whether you need to stick around: there is a short end-credits scene after the Japanese credits, and I promise it's worth your while.

    5. There's Plenty Of Satoru Gojo To Go Around

And finally, the big question on everyone's minds: How much Satoru Gojo content is there in JUJUTSU KAISEN 0?

He plays a significant role in the story, but if you're looking for some hard numbers, I've got you covered: Gojo is visibly on-screen for roughly 15 minutes (or exactly 14:50.91 by my shoddy stop-watching), which is a whole 14.3 percent of the film's 105-minute runtime.

So not only is there a constant stream of gorgeous art and animation to drool over, there's enough of Satoru Gojo's wittiness and dazzling eyes to get by until JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2 rolls around in 2023.

Generally, anime movies arrive on streaming platforms like Crunchyroll and Funimation after their international theatrical run is over. For instance, Demon Slayer Mugen Train arrived in the US theatres in April 2021, and it was available to stream on Funimation starting June 2021.

So, if Jujutsu Kaisen 0 follows a similar pattern, the movie might release for streaming sometime around June 2022. Also, it makes sense for MAPPA to release the film on the streaming platforms in the next couple of months. That’s because season 2 of the anime series is already scheduled to arrive in 2023, possibly during the Winter slate.
