When does Stranger Things 5 come out? Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have now confirmed that season 5 will be the end of the Netflix series.

Stranger Things fans, it's official – Stranger Things 5 has finally been confirmed as the final season of the Netflix series.

In a statement alongside the release date for Stranger Things 4, the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, said: "Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling towards our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last."

So, Stranger Things 5 has now been confirmed at Netflix – and the latest rumours also suggest that preparation has already begun on season 5.

But when will it be released? What will happen after the ending of Stranger Things 4? And who will be returning to the cast? Look, we know it's a loooong way off but, here's everything we know about Stranger Things season 5 so far...

WILL THERE BE A STRANGER THINGS 5?

Yes, Stranger Things 5 is happening – and it will be the final season.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer previously said: "Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story."

It sounds like the Duffer brothers are confident that they can deliver another iconic season of the show, which is a really great sign considering how incredible season 4 has been so far. (There's still another two episodes to come in Volume 2 as well.)

WHEN WILL STRANGER THINGS 5 BE RELEASED?

Well, that all depends on when the season begins filming. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, production on the fourth season was delayed massively. As a result, the release date – which was previously rumoured to be January 2021 – was pushed back to May 2022.

Filming on Stranger Things 4 wrapped in August/September 2021, and the first seven episodes were released 9 months later.

We'll know more once production begins on season 5. The good news is that the Duffer brothers already know what's going to happen in the story, but with filming and editing, it's possible that fans might not see Stranger Things 5 until late 2023 at the earliest. Here's hoping it doesn't take as long as last time!

WILL STRANGER THINGS 5 BE THE FINAL SEASON?

Yes. Stranger Things season 5 will be the final season of the show, but it won't be the end of the Stranger Things universe.

In statement discussing the future of the franchise and the season 4 release date, the Duffer brothers said: "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes."

In an interview with Collider, David Harbour also said that season 4 lays the groundwork for the ending of the show: "We're introducing new stuff, but we're also tightening and wrapping up in a certain direction. To make it have a clear, clean, specific, and definite ending at some point, which I can't really talk about.”

Producer Shawn Levy also told Collider in a separate interview that he and the Duffer brothers have the end in sight: "There is a plan and that too will be shared not quite as soon as a sense of when season four is coming out, but soon enough."

He continued: "I can say this. No one’s making it up as we go along and there is an endgame, if you will."

WILL THERE BE A TIME JUMP IN STRANGER THINGS 5?

As any fan of Stranger Things will know, every starts with a little bit of a time jump. The timeline jumped from November/December 1983 in season 1 to October 1984 in season 2, and then to July 1985 in season 3. Season 4 takes place in March 1986, eight months after the Battle of Starcourt.

But it now seems like season 5 might have an even bigger time jump than usual. The Duffer brothers told TVLine that a lengthy gap is almost unavoidable because of the ages of the younger actors: "I’m sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that."

There's no confirmation what year season 5 will take place in just yet, but if the show goes beyond March 1988 then it could coincide with the release of Beetlejuice which, of course, stars the real life superstar Winona Ryder.

“Stranger Things” Season 5: Release Date, Cast News, and More

Season 5 of "Stranger Things" marks the final chapter for the hit Netflix sci-fi series. Here, find out everything we know so far about the final season.

Everything We Know So Far About “Stranger Things” Season 5

    The final chapter. 😢

    TINA ROWDEN/NETFLIX

We knew this day would one day come because as they say, all good things must come to an end. On February 17, the Duffer Brothers announced that season 5 will be the final chapter for Stranger Things, the sci-fi series that’s sustained global phenomenon status throughout its record-breaking run on Netflix. It’ll be very difficult to say goodbye, but the epic adventures of our favorite Dungeons & Dragons crew are not over yet.

    RELATED STORY

New Pics from “Stranger Things 4" Vol. 2 Are Here

We’ve seen Eleven, Will, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Max, and the rest of the Hawkins gang fight demogorgons, traverse the mysteries of the Upside Down, battle Russians and Mind Flayers at the Starcourt Mall, and try to defeat the alternate dimension’s latest villain, Vecna. We still have two episodes left in Stranger Things 4 — Volume 2 debuts on July 1 — but we’re already wondering how the many storylines of this show might wrap up in season 5. And most importantly, when will it premiere? Will it be split up into two parts like season 4? There are so many questions.

But luckily, we’re here to break all the details down. Below, find out everything we know so far about season 5 of Stranger Things.

    Has season 5 started filming?

Not just yet. But in an interview with TVLine, Matt Duffer confirmed that the development for the final season’s storylines is underway. “I’m not sure we’re ready to say yet a start date for shooting,” he said. “But a lot of it is pretty well mapped out.”

Although, Matt added that some details are likely to change as cameras start rolling. “We learn a lot every time we make a [season],” he said. “We’ve learned a lot just working with all of our new actors and the ones that we’ve worked with for a long time over this year [making Season 4], so I’m sure it’ll change a little bit from that outline.”

“The ending is the hard thing,” he added. “That’s obviously the stressful thing. We really want to stick the landing.”

Is there a release date for season 5?

Given that the series has not started filming yet, there is no set debut date for season 5. There were three years in between the release of seasons 3 and 4, but the pandemic contributed to scheduling and production delays. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait that long for season 5, but it’s still likely that we won’t see the final installment of Stranger Things until 2023 or 2024.

For those worrying that the series might move to a weekly release on Netflix, fear not. On June 7, Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, confirmed that the final season will follow suit with previous iterations and will be released all at once.

“For the fans of Stranger Things this is how they’ve been watching that show, and I think to change that on them would be disappointing,” he said, according to Variety. “To not give them exactly what they’ve been expecting — which is Stranger Things is a seasonal experience, they go through that with them — I think that it would be an abrupt change for the member.”

What will season 5 be about?

Remember, there are still two episodes left in Stranger Things 4. When we left the gang in the seventh episode of Volume 1, Nancy was stuck in the Upside Down with Vecna, Joyce and Murray appeared to have saved Hopper from the Soviet Union prison, Eleven is in the secret lab with Dr. Brenner and Dr. Owens, and Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle are seemingly on their way there to rescue her. TL;DR — a lot is happening!

Since we don’t know yet how these events will unfold, it’s hard to guess what will go down in season 5. But Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Vecna, aka One, aka Henry Creel, in Stranger Things 4, hinted that we could see the villain’s return in the final season.

“Let me put it this way: I know about season five. Take from that what you will,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Hmmmm.

And in their TVLine interview, the Duffer Brothers revealed that Hawkins High’s students will all be a little bit older.

“I’m sure we will do a time jump,” Ross said. “Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that… So these are all discussions we’re going to have with our writers when we start the room up. Believe it or not, we’re still working on Season 4. We’re trying to finish the final two episodes, they’re so massive.” Woah.

Stranger Things season 5: Expected release date, cast, plot & more

Stranger Things season 5 has officially been confirmed, and it's sadly the show's last. Here's everything to know about the expected release date, cast, plot and more.

Stranger Things season 5: Expected release date, cast, plot and more

The series is going to be the show's last 😢

by EMILY GULLA 10 JUN 2022

Stranger Things season four has officially landed on Netflix, and naturally we're already looking ahead to more instalments of the blockbuster sci-fi drama. Series four volume one dropped last Friday (27th May), while volume two is coming to Netflix on 1st July.

And if that's still not enough (of course it isn't), there's already plenty of talk about Stranger Things season five. The show's creators have confirmed that a fifth series of ST *is* happening, but that it will sadly be the show's last. Here's everything we know about season five so far...

What will happen in Stranger Things season 5?

With season four volume two still yet to be released, we'll have to wait a little while before we get a full picture of what might happen in season five. Still, The Duffer Brothers have revealed one key detail about the next season: that it will likely feature a time jump from season four.

"We learn a lot every time we make a [season]," Matt Duffer told TVLine. "We've learned a lot just working with all of our new actors and the ones that we've worked with for a long time over this year [making season 4], so I'm sure it'll change a little bit from that outline."

He continued, "I'm sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we'd have shot [seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that. So these are all discussions we're going to have with our writers when we start the room up. Believe it or not, we're still working on season 4. We’re trying to finish the final two episodes, they’re so massive."

Previously, the brothers also teased "more exciting stories" to come from the Stranger Things universe, while also nodding towards what we can expect to happen in the fifth series.

In their S5 announcement statement, the creators wrote: "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down."

Elsewhere, the creators teased details on the season five finale, telling SFX, "We know what the ending is."

Matt Duffer went on, "It's conceivable that it changes but I think it's unlikely because it's one of those endings that just feels, and has always felt, right. And it also feels sort of inevitable. Then when you come up with it, you're like, 'oh yeah well, that is absolutely what is has to be.'"

When was Stranger Things season 5 confirmed?

The Stranger Things creators confirmed that season five is indeed going ahead, in an open letter to fans published via Netflix in February. However, they also announced that series five would unfortunately mark the end of Stranger Things.

    NETFLIX

Ahead of season four's release, they wrote: "Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but – as you’ll soon see for yourselves – we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last."

Hey, all good things must come to an end and all that, right?

Netflix also appeared to hint towards the show's final season with an upside down (geddit?) sign reading, "Every ending has a beginning." Cryptic.

Who might star in Stranger Things season 5?

We'd expect all of our favourite Stranger Things cast members to be back on our screens for season five - providing that they're still alive at the end of season four, that is.

If everyone's alive and well, that'll include Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Noah Schnapp (Will), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Sadie Sink (Max), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Joe Keery (Steve), Priah Ferguson (Erica) and Winona Ryder (Joyce).

Fans are also hoping some of the new season four characters will return, like Eduardo Franco as Argyle (but maybe not Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna.)

    NETFLIX

When is Stranger Things season 5 expected to be released?

We've still got the second instalment of season four to come, so we might sadly be waiting a while for season five. It doesn't look like production has started just yet, so we'll have a better idea of dates when it does.

Filming on Stranger Things season four wrapped around September 2021, with the series released in late May 2022 - around eight months later. So, depending on when season five production starts and finishes, we'd say we're looking at at least late 2023 for a potential release date.
