well, it is a little tricky

6 x^2 + 5 x = 4

to get something on your list you subtract 4 from both sides.

I get x = 1/2 or x = 4/3

Let the unknown be ‘x’. Transcribing the word equation into a real equation we have:

4x = x^2 -5.

Re arranging we have: x^2 - 4x - 5 = 0. This is a second order polynomial. In general, any nth order polynomial has ’n’ roots or solutions. Third order will have three roots, fourth order will have four roots, etc. (Fundamental Theorem of Algebra). This tells us, in this instance, that there are two roots or solutions to this equation. These roots can be distinctive roots, repeating roots, or complex conjugate roots. There is a standardize equation for second order polynomials that can be derived ca

x=(-1, 5) [Ordered pair, 2-tuple]. The number(s) are -1 and 5.

PREMISES 4x=x^2-5 ASSUMPTIONS

Let x=an independent variable

CALCULATIONS

“Four times a number is five less than the square of the number” can be represented by:

4x=x^2-5 [Flip the equation]

x^2-5=4x

x^2-4x-5=0 [Subtract 4x from both sides of the equation]

Factor the polynomial,

(x+1)(x-5)=0

Either x+1=0, x=-1 and/or x-5=0, x=5

x= (-1, 5) PROOF

If x=(-1, 5), then the mathematical statement x^2-4x-5=0 returns

(-1)^2-4(-1)-5=5^2-4(5)-5=0

1-(-4)-5=25-20-5=0 1+4-5=5-5=0 5-5=5-5=0 and

0=0 establishes the roots x=(-1, 5) of the statement

Let no. be x Four times a no.=4x Square of no.=x2

4x = x2 -5 ( This is required equation)

Taking all variables to right hand side

0 = x2 - 4x -5

Same as x2 -4x -5 =0

Abv is a quadratic equation.

Solve by using formula /factorize

Using Formula

x= (-b +/_ root (b^2 - 4ac) )÷ 2a

where a, b are coefficients of x2 and x respectively, c is constant.

Here a = 1 b =-4 c =-5

Sub above values in eqtn;

x = (-( -4) +/- root ((-4^2) - 4×1×-5) ÷ (2×1)

= (4 +/_ root (16+20)) ÷ 2

= (4 +/- root36 ) ÷2

= (4+/- 6) ÷ 2 =(4+6 )/2 , (4–6)/2 =10/2 , -2/2 =5 ,-1 X =5, -1 OR by factorization,

x2 -4x -5 = (x-5)(x+1)

equating to zero we get,

X =5,
