Grab your sunscreen: a second season of the romance series The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 is happening.

A Prime Video adaptation of Jenny Han's best-selling novel, The Summer I Turned Pretty focuses on Isabel “Belly” Conklin (newcomer Lola Tung), a 16-year-old Asian-American girl who becomes embroiled in a love triangle with two brothers, played by Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno.

The second season will be based on It's Not Summer Without You, Han's second book in the Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy.

Tung recently revealed her hopes for season 2. Speaking to E! News, she said: "There are a lot of really special scenes from the book. There are many, many special moments.

"I'm very excited to see the trajectory of Belly's relationship with both of the boys and with everyone in her life. She can only continue to grow and to go on this journey and I'm very excited to go on it with her."

Briney, who plays Conrad, said: "I want to see Conrad be a jerk at prom. That's what I want to see. I want to see him be rude."

Casalegno, who plays Conrad's brother Jeremiah, added: "I definitely think the flashbacks would be a blast. It's something so special to be able to look forward to how a book was written and trying to translate that into a series, and also fit it in with the changes that were made for season 1 from book 1. I'm excited to see how it plays out, genuinely."

Here's everything you need to know about The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 release date speculation

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 has been given the greenlight, as confirmed by Deadline, but there's currently no word on when we can expect it.

Speaking to TODAY, Han said: "I'm looking forward to seeing other seasons. Literal seasons. All you see is summertime now. There's a lot more road to hoe and we'll get to see (Belly's) world a bit bigger."

The original source material is part of a trilogy – It's Not Summer Without You was published in 2010, and We'll Always Have Summer the following year – so there's plenty more to explore moving forwards.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 cast: Who could return?

We'd expect all of the main cast to feature in season 2, so that's:

Lola Tung as BellyChristopher Briney as ConradGavin Casalegno as JeremiahSean Kaufman as StevenJackie Chung as LaurelRachel Blanchard as Susannah

There's also Minnie Mills as Shayla, Summer Madison as Nicole, David Iacono as Cam, Rain Spencer as Taylor, Alfredo Narciso as Cleveland, Colin Ferguson as John, Tom Everett Scott as Adam, and more.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 plot and spoilers: What will happen?

In season 1's finale, Belly's dreams finally came true when she locked lips with Conrad. The pair had faced their fair share of hurdles but in spite of everything, they found their way back to one another, their bond stronger than ever.

But there's a dark cloud hanging over their romance.

Conrad and Jeremiah's mum Susannah has cancer – a devastating blow that Jeremiah discovered at the debutante ball, while Conrad had long known the truth.

Susannah agreed to undergo treatment after initially refusing, much to her sons' relief, but with the odds stacked against her, you'd be wise to brace yourselves for heartbreak – which will, no doubt, put further strain on Belly and Conrad's relationship.

Plus, we'd expect Jeremiah to be right in the middle of any and all drama given that he's, well, Jeremiah.

Prime Video's new show The Summer I Turned Pretty was given the greenlight for its second season before it even premiered on Friday, June 17. That might mean viewers haven't had a chance to binge the show and get obsessed with it, but it sure sounds like they will.

Here's everything to know about the series adaptation of Jenny Han’s YA novel The Summer I Turned Pretty and its Season 2. Some spoilers ahead.

Yes, Deadline reports that the second season will definitely be happening. A release date hasn't been announced, but with it having a June release this year it might be safe to guess it'll be out in the summer of 2023.

The story follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin, a girl who finds herself in a love triangle between two brothers named Conrad and Jeremiah. Belly has had a longtime crush on the older brother, Conrad, and he's finally returning her interest—and then suddenly his younger brother, Jeremiah, is fighting for her affections.

The context for this development is that they're having one last summer at Cousins Beach, where the boys and their mom have traditionally met with Belly's family every year. The brothers' mom, Susannah is battling cancer and ultimately decides she no longer wants to go through aggressive treatment. They're still all trying to have a “normal” summer together, but that proves to be more and more challenging.

There are two more books to Han's original series, so the second season might follow the plot of the second book, It's Not Summer Without You. In the book, Susannah has passed away and Belly's new relationship with Conrad fractures under the stress. He ends up running away from home, and while on a road trip to find him with Jeremiah, she finds herself turning to the younger brother. This could be the plot of season 2, but there were some changes from the first book in the first season and there's no guarantee they'll stick to the book's plotlines.

The show stars newcomer Lola Tung, Jackie Chung, Rachel Blanchard, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, Sean Kaufman, Alfredo Narciso and Minnie Mills, Colin Ferguson, and Tom Everett Scott. Briney and Casalegno will almost certainly be back as the brothers who continue to fight for Belly's affections across the three book series by Han. It's also likely that we will be seeing Belly's family return again, though Rachel Blanchard, who plays Susannah, may or may not be there if the character has passed in the time between seasons.

Behind the scenes, Han will be back as a showrunner, this time working with Sarah Kucserka. Her former co-showrunner, Gabrielle Stanton, will continue as an executive producer, along with Han, Kucserka, and Karen Rosenfelt. Han also wrote the show's pilot, and continues to have a strong influence on the way the onscreen version of her story develops.

More teen romance is in store on The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2. Prime Video renewed the drama ahead of last week's series premiere which is based on author Jenny Han's book trilogy.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on author Jenny Han's book of the same title, which is the first in a trilogy — much like Han's other YA bestselling To All the Boys novels, which were adapted into hit movies on Netflix. They have other similarities, like the main focus on first love and a half-Korean girl as the protagonist. Han herself serves as the showrunner for the Amazon series.

The story follows 16-year-old Isabel "Belly" Conklin (Lola Tung), who is caught up in a love triangle with two brothers. She spends every summer at the beach with childhood pals Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), whose mom Susannah (Rachel) is best friends with her own mother Laurel (Jackie Chung). This particular summer, Belly joins the local debutante society and undergoes a bit of a glow-up — and the boys realize she's grown up into an attractive young woman.

Belly has had a crush on Conrad for years, but Jeremiah is irresistibly fun. Everything is further complicated by Conrad's recent moodiness, a cute local boy and a secret their mothers are harboring. By the end of the summer, Belly makes a choice, sealed with a kiss.

“When I decided to adapt Summer for television, I knew we’d need more than one season to honor the story we are telling,” Han said in an official statement. “To receive a second season pickup ahead of the premiere of season 1 is beyond my wildest dreams. I am so grateful to Amazon Studios for this amazing vote of confidence in our show, and cannot wait to bring our incredible team back together to tell the next chapter in our story."

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 plot and book spoilers

In the season 1 finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty, Conrad saves Belly from embarrassment when Jeremiah fails to show up for the waltz at the debutante ball. Turns out, Jeremiah is having a breakdown after finding out his mother has cancer. Conrad has known for months, which explains his moody behavior all summer.

After Susannah's secret comes out, the teens have a hard time adjusting. Conrad apologies to Belly for mistreating her. She kisses him, a clear sign that she's choosing him over Jeremiah.

But the course of true love never does run smooth, does it? Especially not when it comes to teens.

Season 1 generally stays faithful to Han's first book, with some updates. Season 2 may follow the second book, It's Not Summer Without You, again with changes here and there.

Belly and Conrad start a romantic relationship, which falls apart when Susannah dies. He reverts to acting surly and emotionally distant, and they have a big fight at his mom's funeral. Then, Conrad disappears from school.

To mark the end of an era, the trio throw a blowout party. Laurel shows up to arrange a truce: The boys get to keep the house if Conrad returns to school.
