    Premise

On February 14, 2020, Netflix released an initial synopsis written by the Duffer Brothers to coincide with the release of the season's first teaser trailer.[6]

We're excited to officially announce that production for Stranger Things 4 is now underway—and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper! Although it's not all good news for our "American"; [Hopper] is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, Russia, where he will face dangers both human… and other. Meanwhile, back in the States, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long-buried, something that connects everything...

On February 17, 2022, Netflix released a newer plot description for the season that expanded upon the previously released synopsis.[7]

It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn't made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.

Stranger Things season four is finally on its way – and it has some big questions to answer following season three's explosive 77-minute finale, 'The Battle of Starcourt'.

On February 17, Netflix gave superfans an absolutely mind-flaying amount of information about what's to come for the Hawkins gang, and where their future lies. Some of it is good news, and others things left us feeling a little Upside Down. New pictures followed in March and now, as we move into April, we have an exciting full-length trailer.

Stranger Things season 4 release date: When will it air?

Stranger Things season four finally has a release date, and will be coming at you in two parts.

Part one will drop on Netflix on May 27, 2022, with the second half following just six weeks later on July 1, 2022.

The events we're about to witness will then pave the way to Stranger Things season five – which is, sadly, the final season of the show.

In part of a long announcement letter, the creators the Duffer brothers wrote: "With nine scripts, over eight-hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one.

"Everyone involved is incredibly proud of the results, and we can’t wait to share it with you."

Speaking about why the show must end with season five, producer Shawn Levy told ScreenRant: "Well, we never wanted to run on fumes and we wanted to only tell as much story as the [Duffer] brothers saw and feel with clarity.

"So it's been clear for a while that they know exactly where we're headed and this is the arc."

He continued: "We wouldn't want to stick around for one moment beyond that vision and the clarity of that voice. So rather than focusing on that sad day that happens who knows when, the end of season five, I'll just once again reaffirm what I've told everyone, which is it has been a long-ass wait for season four.

Stranger Things season 4 cast: Who's returning?

Stranger Things wouldn't be the show it is without its colourful, larger-than-life cast, so expect this lot back on your screens once again: Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Will (Noah Schnapp), Max (Sadie Sink), Steve (Joe Keery), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Robin (Maya Hawke) and Joyce (Winona Ryder), among others.

We also know that David Harbour will be returning as Hopper, despite that seemingly tragic end to season three. Chatting to Total Film, Harbour explained his character "had to change" and "resurrect in some way", adding: "So we'll see a very different guy going forwards. The same guy, but in a different vein. It's a very cool thing to be able to play."

While it's still unclear how his character survived, Harbour has revealed that season four will reveal more of his backstory in a call back to season two where Eleven found boxes in Hopper's attic labelled "dad", "Vietnam" and "New York".

Watch the Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer

To mark the start of filming on February 14, 2020, the very first Stranger Things Season 4 trailer was released. It’s a brief teaser and only includes footage of David Harbour’s Hopper, but it’s certainly better than nothing. Then on May 6, 2021, another teaser was released that took us back to the Rainbow Room and hinted at more of Eleven’s origin story being told in Season 4. On August 6, 2021, we got another sneak peek at the new season with much more new footage mixed with footage from previous seasons.

On September 25, 2021, we got a little featurette of the ominous Creel House that the kids explore, also revealing the family that once lived there. Finally, on November 6, 2021, we have a full trailer, featuring Eleven writing a letter to Mike about her new life in California and adjusting to life but also excited to see him again for Spring Break. Yet another trailer was released after that, this one on April 12, 2022.

When Is the Stranger Things Season 4 Release Date?

Netflix's original plan was undoubtedly impacted by the COVID-19 shutdown. Filming began in January 2020 and was only able to last for a couple of months before production was shut down on the new season due to the pandemic, and then filming didn’t resume until October 2020. Originally, filming was supposed to last seven months, from January to August 2020, but even then Stranger Things has a long post-production schedule.

Broken into two volumes, volume one of Stranger Things Season 4 Volume One will premiere on May 27, 2022, with Episodes 1 to 7, and Volume Two will premiere on July 1, 2022, with Episodes 8 and 9. The Duffer Brothers also have revealed that every episode in the fourth season is long but Episodes 7, 8, and 9 are like feature-length movies.

The show has also already been renewed for a fifth and final season, as announced by Netflix.
