    'Stranger Things' Season 5

Stranger Things Season 4 concluded with a two-part finale on Netflix. Here's what we know about the future of the show, including season 5.

In February, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer—the “Duffer Brothers”—published an open letter about the series’ future. In the letter, addressed to "nerds" (fans), the Duffers teased Season 4, the biggest yet (the per episode budget was reported at $30 million). The letter also looked beyond, saying Season 4 would mark “the beginning of the end.”

The Duffers wrote that Season 4 would be the penultimate season, with Season 5 wrapping up the characters first introduced in Season 1. The brothers wrote they had always planned to run the show four or five seasons, explaining how they had mapped out an entire story arc going into Season 1. That story—with Eleven, Mike, Will, and Hopper—will end after Season 5.

But the Duffers didn’t say Season 5 would mark the end of Stranger Things as a franchise.

“There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down.”

Those new “exciting stories” will apparently inform some kind of spin-off to the original series.

Here’s everything we know about Season 5 and the future of Stranger Things.

When Will Stranger Things Return for Season 5?

    NETFLIX

The good news: Stranger Things 5 is definitely happening. The uncertainty: because filming hasn’t begun, it’s unclear when it will air.

In a recent interview, the Duffers said they didn’t yet have shoot dates for the final season. They said they originally wanted to shoot Season 4 and Season 5 back-to-back, but because of the breadth of Season 4, this schedule proved impossible. The filming delay will mean, the Duffers said, that Season 5 will see a time jump from Season 4—likely accounting for the age of the actors.

While we don’t yet have a date, Netflix confirmed that the season will be released as a “binge model,” meaning it will not appear weekly, a model some streaming services are beginning to adopt.

We’re hoping for a late 2023 air date, though this may be optimistic, especially if the final season goes as big as Season 4.

What Will Stranger Things Season 5 Be About?

    NETFLIX

The Duffers have said that Season 5 will explore the origins of the Upside Down. It will also reportedly explore the physics of the world—why it appears trapped in a specific moment in time—and the pecking order of the monsters who inhabit the realm.

Season 4 introduced the Upside Down’s temporal stagnancy, with Nancy discovering that the realm appears to be stuck in 1983.

Season 4 also saw Eleven opening the portal to the Upside Down much earlier than we first believed; she zaps Henry Creel—who, spoiler alert, becomes Vecna—into the Upside Down in 1979.

How does the Upside Down then find itself in 1983? Was Henry Creel the first monster?

Season 5 will clarify all our Upside Down history questions.

What About That Stranger Things Spinoff?

Based on the Duffers’ letter, the Stranger Things spinoff won’t continue the story of the original cast of characters. It’s unclear if the spin-off will even take place in Hawkins.

The only thing known about the spinoff is that both Duffers will be involved—and that it could come in movie form.

In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffers gave an update on their progress.

“We do have an idea for a spinoff that we’re super excited about … but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it. We think everyone — including Netflix — will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it’s very, very different. But somehow Finn Wolfhard — who is one crazy smart kid — correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”

Stay tuned for more updates on the Stranger Things spinoff.

If you've found yourself back on the Stranger Things hype train after the unbridled trip that was the Season Four, Volume Two finale, then you might not want to read what we're about to drop here. In an open letter to Stranger Things fans via The Hollywood Reporter, the creators behind the series, Matt and Ross Duffer, revealed that Season Five would be its last. “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things, they wrote. "At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but—as you’ll see for yourselves—we are now hurtling toward our finale.”

WTH Went Down in the 'Stranger Things' Finale?

Don't worry, Stranger Things heads—there's still anywhere from 80 to 120 hours of Stranger Things left, depending on how many volumes the brothers divvy Season Five up into. (That's a joke.)

Here's everything we know about Season Five of Stranger Things so far.

When Will Season Five of Stranger Things Release?

Considering that nearly three years passed between the debuts of the third and fourth seasons—which was partially due to the pandemic—you have to wonder if Stranger Things won't return until 2023. If the Duffer Brothers are planning anything remotely close to the scale of Season Four, it'll most definitely take a while to film.

What Will Happen in Season Five of Stranger Things?

What will happen? What will happen?! Surely we’re all still reeling and/or investing in a mass Kleenex order, so it feels borderline insane to start speculating how Stranger Things will meet its end.

But that’s my job. And you’re still here. So let’s do it. How about we start with the interdimensional rift that turned Hawkins into a disaster site? The war between the Upside Down and Hawkins is fully on. The final shot shows massive, hellish clouds looming above the neighborhood—and a field of flowers slowly dying. It nearly goes without saying that by opening the doorway between the Upside Down and Hawkins, the oft-terrorized Indiana town will slowly morph into the red-and-black hell our favorite kiddos have fought to destroy for the entirety of Stranger Things. TBD how long residents will be able to convince themselves that it was all just an earthquake.

Does the gang have one last fight in them? They’ll have to. Even though Vecna, you know, will be busy creating a new world order, he’ll surely seek out Eleven to get some sweet revenge. Since we’re slowly learning that the Hawkins Lab prodigies essentially have god powers—they can resurrect the dead, I guess!—she’ll most likely level herself up before the final battle. Here’s my one theory: she’ll have some help. And not the Dusty-Bun-with-a-garbage-can-lid kind.

Either Will or Max will develop powers, somehow. Maybe Will’s time in the Upside Down imbued him with abilities he’ll only uncover as he nears adulthood. And Max? After just surviving Vecna’s grasp, maybe the Duffer Bros. will write in a Harry Potter-esque, Boy Who Lived situation, where she’s scarred from the near-death experience, but has some kind of an edge against the baddie because of it. Either way, she’ll probably wake up from her coma soon enough, but Eleven will have to pull more mind tricks to make it happen. However it all goes down, Season Five will most likely pick up with our heroes struggling to put the Upside Down back in the Upside Down—or destroy it entirely.

As if you have any doubt that Vecna will return, the actor behind the monster, Jamie Campbell Bower, seemingly confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the baddie will return in the fifth season. "Let me put it this way: I know about Season Five. Take from that what you will," Campbell said. Want a good laugh? At the time, he teased how Vecna would change in Volume Two. "I think what you will see is more of the human aspect of Vecna," he said. “Let me say that much. And there’s a huge, great, cool thing—I need to keep my mouth closed!—but there’s a huge, great, cool thing you see as well!” A huge, cool, thing, man? Your character turning out to be the singular evil force behind the entirety of Stranger Things is a wee bit more than a huge, cool thing?!

Now, begin your prayer circles, so that none of your favorite characters will die at the monstrous hands of Vecna in the series finale. Brace yourselves for the horror, people.

When does Stranger Things 5 come out? Creators Matt and Ross Duffer have now confirmed that season 5 will be the end of the Netflix series.

Stranger Things fans, it's official – Stranger Things 5 has finally been confirmed as the final season of the Netflix series.

In a statement alongside the release date for Stranger Things 4, the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, said: "Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling towards our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last."

So, Stranger Things 5 has now been confirmed at Netflix – and the latest rumours also suggest that preparation has already begun on season 5.

But when will it be released? What will happen after the ending of Stranger Things 4? And who will be returning to the cast? Look, we know it's a loooong way off but, here's everything we know about Stranger Things season 5 so far...

WILL THERE BE A STRANGER THINGS 5?

Yes, Stranger Things 5 is happening – and it will be the final season.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer previously said: "Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story."

It sounds like the Duffer brothers are confident that they can deliver another iconic season of the show, which is a really great sign considering how incredible season 4 has been so far. (There's still another two episodes to come in Volume 2 as well.)

WHEN WILL STRANGER THINGS 5 BE RELEASED?

Well, that all depends on when the season begins filming. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, production on the fourth season was delayed massively. As a result, the release date – which was previously rumoured to be January 2021 – was pushed back to May 2022.

Filming on Stranger Things 4 wrapped in August/September 2021, and the first seven episodes were released 9 months later.

We'll know more once production begins on season 5. The good news is that the Duffer brothers already know what's going to happen in the story, but with filming and editing, it's possible that fans might not see Stranger Things 5 until late 2023 at the earliest. Here's hoping it doesn't take as long as last time!

WILL STRANGER THINGS 5 BE THE FINAL SEASON?

Yes. Stranger Things season 5 will be the final season of the show, but it won't be the end of the Stranger Things universe.

In statement discussing the future of the franchise and the season 4 release date, the Duffer brothers said: "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes."

In an interview with Collider, David Harbour also said that season 4 lays the groundwork for the ending of the show: "We're introducing new stuff, but we're also tightening and wrapping up in a certain direction. To make it have a clear, clean, specific, and definite ending at some point, which I can't really talk about.”

Producer Shawn Levy also told Collider in a separate interview that he and the Duffer brothers have the end in sight: "There is a plan and that too will be shared not quite as soon as a sense of when season four is coming out, but soon enough."

He continued: "I can say this. No one’s making it up as we go along and there is an endgame, if you will."

WILL THERE BE A TIME JUMP IN STRANGER THINGS 5?

As any fan of Stranger Things will know, every starts with a little bit of a time jump. The timeline jumped from November/December 1983 in season 1 to October 1984 in season 2, and then to July 1985 in season 3. Season 4 takes place in March 1986, eight months after the Battle of Starcourt.

But it now seems like season 5 might have an even bigger time jump than usual. The Duffer brothers told TVLine that a lengthy gap is almost unavoidable because of the ages of the younger actors: "I’m sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that."

There's no confirmation what year season 5 will take place in just yet, but if the show goes beyond March 1988 then it could coincide with the release of Beetlejuice which, of course, stars the real life superstar Winona Ryder.
