What state shares no common letters with its capital?

South Dakota – Of all 50 U.S. states and their corresponding capitals, there is only one pairing that shares no common letters between them: Pierre and South Dakota. It also happens to be the country’s second-smallest state capital by population (after Montpelier, Vermont) with just over 14,000 residents. Before Pierre became the capital — in fact, before South Dakota even became a state — Yankton was the capital of the Dakota Territory, which covered both North and South Dakota. Of course, Yankton would share several letters with its state, if only the capital had stayed put. However, it moved to Bismarck in 1883 (the current capital of North Dakota) and, six years later in 1889, the Dakotas split in two, with North Dakota retaining its capital. South Dakota chose Pierre as its temporary replacement, being that it stood in the middle of the state. After going to a public vote, Pierre became the permanent capital in 1890.:

“Which is the only state capital that shares no letters with the state it is capital of?”

    The state capital of Pará

    is Belém

which shares no letters with the state it is the capital of. The state capital of South Dakota

    is Pierre, South Dakota

, which also shares no letters in common with its state.

Thus, there are at least two.

The reason why is nothing magical, but the fact that /p, b, and d/ are the most uncommon stops in English (and probably Portuguese).

If a town name has a [d] [p] or [b] it will be less likely to occur in a state name.

The only one that comes to mind is Pierre, South Dakota. Why would you ask this of Quora when the answer can be Googled in 30 seconds? Quora is a wonderful source of experiences and opinions; search engines are far quicker for simple fact queries.
