Tired of Michael McDonald's music? Which is great if you like it but it's not Doobies music IMO.

He got tired of touring. Tiran just didn't want to go back on the road at that time. Plain and simple.

Have several friends very close to the band. This is the reason....

The last 3 times I saw Tiran play, it was with Moby Grape guitarist Jerry Miller's band. Ex-Doobie Dale Ockerman was on keys all three times, and, one show, Sons of Champlin guitarist Terry Haggerty sat in. All really excellent shows, and all in the Bay or Santa Cruz area.

Tiran is a great guy, very talented too. My old band did a few shows with his old band, Room With A View years ago.

    My sentiments exactly.

The Doobies are an odd sort of band changing over their history. My favorite stuff is via Johnston, Simmons and Porter as vocalists (and players). Baxter was a nice addition as well. (though I think he sort of added a "jazzy" element to the band and eventually was responsible for McDonald coming aboard). Ironically a disagreement over the direction of what was now a sort of Steely Dan meets top 40 R and B sound between Baxter and McDonald led to a break up.

When Johnston and Simmons roles were diminished in favor of Baxter and McDonald I was no longer a fan. They lost their edge and funkiness.

What drives me nuts about McDonald is his slurring of lyrics a la Rickie Lee Jones--I find his style a bit too affected for my tastes. The Doobies in the beginning were clearly a band that could rock out and some of their Southern swampy funk music was great. They were kind of like the early Allmans with better harmonies at times. McDonald pretty much killed that off in favor of his easy listening (and really boring) blue eyed soul.

Nice to hear Porter is still playing!

(sorry I just had to get all that off my chest)

I don't know why but this thread has reminded me of another sort of under the radar bassist--Kenny Gradney.

I loved him when he was with Delaney and Bonnie and friends and he still rocks in Little Feat.

Tom Johnston developed a bleeding ulcer on the road and had to quit touring for a while. Skunk had played with MM in Steely Dan and suggested him. They had exactly two weeks to find and rehearse the new guy before the tour continued. Michael came down, fit in well, and brought an armful of songs. Sold.

Everyone seems to talk like Johnston/Simmons/Porter ended and never happened again. They got back together in 1989 and were really sharp. They've continued on and done four or five albums, though Tiran got sick of the continual touring and decided to work locally. Skylark took over for a good while but had a stroke so they've had to bring in a guy who played with them way back, John Cowan. They've also lost two of their long-time drummers to death lately. I like their new stuff.

The way their long-time manager, Bruce Cohn, put it, they've had about one turnover in personnel every years since the beginning.

Also Why was Jeff Baxter skunk? Baxter, who had been mistakenly locked out of the session, was outside just minding his own business–and doing his business–when someone inside opened a door, stepping into his, shall we say, line of fire. “ ‘You skunk! ‘ the [wet] one kept repeating,” according to the Creem piece. A nickname was born.

Likewise Who did Michael McDonald replace in the Doobie Brothers? McDonald, who joined the Doobies as a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist in 1975 to replace an ailing Tom Johnston, steered the band in a creative direction that was less Hells Angels and more Steely Dan, with albums Takin’ It to the Streets (1976), Livin’ on the Fault Line (1977), Minute by Minute (1978), and One …
