Subnautica, the open-world, underwater survival game from Unknown Worlds Entertainment, requires gamers to collect resources in order to craft functional objects and stay alive.

The game was a surprise hit with fans and critics, who loved the game's survival mechanics, the sense of isolation that it gave the player, and the unexpected descent into horror as players delved deeper into the alien ocean. Thankfully, players don't just have fins and a knife to navigate the water and fend off predators, as they can craft a range of vehicles to speed up travel and evade leviathans. To make these vehicles, players first need to find Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments.

Updated February 23, 2022, by Jack Pursey: Exploring planet 4546B's ocean for crafting materials is one of the most enjoyable parts of Subnautica, but also one of the most difficult to due to the game's lack of a map feature. For those who are ready to start crafting vehicles, this guide has been updated to offer some extra help. It now includes more information on where to find the Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments, what they're used for, and how to craft the Mobile Vehicle Bay itself.

What Are Mobile Vehicle Bay Fragments For?

In Subnautica, to build submarines, rockets, and prawn suits, gamers will need to assemble the Mobile Vehicle Bay. Doing so requires blueprints, but the player will only receive these after they find and scan three separate Fragments. Fragments are usually found in wreck sites scattered across the game's map. While there are several of these, there are some better wrecks to look for them in.

Underwater Islands Wreck's Mobile Vehicle Bay Fragments

From the Safe Shallows, the best resource may be the large wreck at the Underwater Islands. Lying just west of Lifepod 17 (coordinates x: -510, y: -91, and z: -45 for players who follow #1 of the top pro tips for Subnautica), the wreck is the larger of two in the western Grassy Plateau (-635 -50 -2), and may often contain up to three Fragments. The wreckage is distinctive in its large, C-like shape.

It's recommended that players have a rebreather and high-capacity tank to ensure they don't suffocate while exploring te wreck, though players may be able to return quickly to the surface for oxygen, as the wreckage is only at a depth of about 80m. On the southern side of the debris, there's a door-shaped area of damage at about 70m down.

Entering through this doorway, the player must turn left (west), pass through to the next section of the hallway, and go up. In the southwest corner of this room, beside the damaged section emitting electrical sparks, a Fragment rests at a depth of about 65m.

The player must now find the stairs to the west, approximately 68m down, which can be hard to find, so it may help for players to remove their googles — which many players didn't know they could do in Subnautica. A second Fragment can be found hiding amongst some pipes and cargo, in the southeast corner of the next room, at roughly 70m.

Blood Grass Wreck's Mobile Vehicle Bay Fragments

If a third Mobile Vehicle Bay Fragment doesn't spawn at this wreck, the player should exit the way they came in and head to the southeast. Not far, there's a second large wreck amidst a patch of Blood Grass (-432 -90 -268), but to access this one, players will need a Laser Cutter. On the northeast end of the wreckage, at about 107m, there's a door that players must cut through.

Inside, there's another door to the left, which will also require the Cutter. The third Fragment lies on the floor (once again to the left of the door) and just below the table. With the last Fragment in hand, players can build the Mobile Vehicle Bay by using the Fabricator and get back to hauling in resources. However, Subnautica Players should know how to get diamonds if they want to get their hands on the Prawn Suit.

    Other Possible Wrecks with Fragments

Pictured above is a fan-made map with all the other wrecks in the game; most of these can spawn Fragments as well.

Although it may be tempting to head straight to the large wrecks on the outer portions of the map, it's highly recommended that before obtaining vehicles, players stick to only exploring the wrecks that are as close to the Safe Shallows area as possible. Not only do players run the risk of drowning in the farther and deeper regions, but as shown by the map's skulls, there are deadly leviathans lurking around some of the larger wrecks. These creatures will quite frankly obliterate players if they venture there without a vehicle.

For anyone looking at the map above and are terrified to see the handful of transparent skulls around the Safe Shallow area, fear not. These skulls are in far deeper regions of the planet that won't be accessed until later in the game.

How To Craft The Mobile Vehicle Bay

Once the necessary fragments have been found, players are ready to craft the Mobile Vehicle Bay and start exploring the depths of Planet 4546B with vehicles. Unfortunately, however, there are still a few more steps needed to build the bay.

The base of the Mobile Vehicle Bay houses four Printer Pods that will activate themselves and float above the Mobile Vehicle Bay when the player approaches. When the player selects a vehicle to construct, the Printer Pods will swarm out in front of the Mobile Vehicle Bay to build the vehicle. Be warned that being under a Prawn Suit after it is built and sinking will damage Robin.

The player can pick up the Mobile Vehicle Bay by looking at the metal platform and pressing LMB.

Subnautica Below Zero: Mobile Vehicle Bay Fragment locations

Ready to build the Seatruck or Prawn suit? Here's where to find Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments in Subnautica Below Zero.

There’s a lot to see in Subnautica Below Zero, and most of it is far from your drop pod. The best way to explore farther reaches is to build the Seatruck, but you need a special deployable item in order to craft vehicles. It’s called the Mobile Vehicle Bay, and it’s used to build everything from the Prawn suit to extra Seatruck modules. But, before you can build the bay, you’ll need to find Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments. Here’s where you need to look.

Where to find Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments in Below Zero

Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments can be found in various locations throughout the Arctic Kelp Caves, Arctic Kelp Forest, and Twisty Bridges biomes. If you’re in a hurry, three Mobile Vehicle Bay fragments can be found quickly in a cave network about 450 meters east-southeast of the drop pod. Otherwise, it’s worth searching the shallow parts of the Twisty Bridges biome.

If you’re still in the early parts of the game, you’ll want to look for fragments in the Twisty Bridges biome. It’s easier to find fragments in the Arctic Kelp Caves, but they’re all at a depth beyond 100 meters. The only safe way to explore that depth would be to equip the Rebreather.

Like so many other important items in Subnautica Beyond Zero, you’ll need to discover the Mobile Vehicle Bay blueprint before it can be built. In this case, the blueprint can be unlocked by scanning three individual fragments.

Especially for the Mobile Vehicle Bay, the fragments vary in size. One fragment is similar in appearance to common Seaglide fragments, which is to say it’s quite small. Another looks to be some sort of broken electronic device. The other three types can get quite large, and are often found around/within underwater flower pods.

Either way, building the Mobile Vehicle Bay should be one of your very first priorities in Below Zero. It’s the primary stepping stone toward building the Seatruck, which serves to replace both the Seamoth and Cyclops from Subnautica. The Seatruck itself is a basic vehicle, but it’s possible to unlock new functions by adding certain modules. For instance, the Seatruck Sleeper Module gives you somewhere to rest, while the Storage Module gives you a place to stash all your goods.

You can’t build the Seatruck until you build the Mobile Vehicle Bay. Luckily, you can find its fragments within the Arctic Kelp Caves at a depth around 100 meters. Scan three, and the blueprint will be yours. After that, you can craft the vehicle bay at the Fabricator. It only requires one Plasteel Ingot, one Computer Chip, and one Lubricant.

Now that you’ve got your own Seatruck, be sure to check out our guide to every shipwreck location in Below Zero.
