    is an action role-playing game in which players take on the role of protagonist Jack Garland, exploring environments and fighting monsters of the series. Combat takes place in real-time, with Jack being able to switch between two assigned jobs and use physical and magical attacks. Once an enemy's "break gauge" is depleted, Jack can perform a finishing blow that crystallizes the enemy, allowing Jack to harvest them and restore a portion of his magic meter.[2][3]


    is set in a dark fantasy interpretation of the setting for the original game. The main character is Jack Garland, a man consumed by a need to destroy Chaos. Jack is accompanied by other companions, including newcomers Ash and Jed. During the journey they face a knight who has taken on the role of Chaos; while seemingly the foretold Warriors of Light, each has doubts as to whether that is their role.[3][4]


    is being co-developed by franchise creator Square Enix and Koei Tecmo division Team Ninja. It is being co-directed by Daisuke Inoue from Square Enix and Hiroya Usuda and Nobumichi Kumabe from Team Ninja; co-produced by Jin Fujiwara from Square Enix and Fumihiko Yasuda from Team Ninja. The story and scenario are being written by Stellavista Ltd. freelancer scriptwriter Kazushige Nojima. Longtime Square Enix employee Tetsuya Nomura created the original concept, and acts as character designer and creative producer in the game.[3][5] The music is being composed by Naoshi Mizuta, with additional contributions by Hidenori Iwasaki and Ryo Yamazaki.[6] Nomura created the initial idea for after production finished on , imagining an action-focused game about conquering locations. When later approached for a new concept, he combined this initial concept with a different concept of a game series focusing on 's villain Garland, as an angry older protagonist to create the final concept.[3][7] Due to the shift in tone, Nomura originally thought it would be an original title, but Inoue and Fujiwara pushed for its inclusion in the franchise.[6]

    The aim behind the title was a mature, "brutal" take on the series that would separate it from the rest of the franchise while retaining connections to it. The gameplay was designed to emulate Team Ninja's known style of challenging action combat; Team Ninja had previously worked with Square Enix on .[3] The job system, a recurring feature of , took inspiration from the system created for , with Inoue saying there were more jobs than that game featured in .[8] The game combines the job system with Soulslike gameplay elements.[9] The level designs deliberately emulated or referenced other numbered entries, such as a wooded wetland area taking inspiration from the Sunleth Waterscape from .[10]

    Rather than a remake of the first , was a new storyline using the original as inspiration, focusing on the themes of examining the role and goals of Warriors of Light. In contrast to the pale crystals used across most of the series, the red crystals and blood-colored elements of artwork emphasised the darker tone.[6] Commenting on the scenario, Nojima highlighted one line, "it's not a hope or a dream. It's like a hunger. A thirst", as the mainspring of the story.[3] The subtitle had a dual meaning of the party literally being strangers in the game world, and the party being unwelcome in the game's "paradise".[6] Character Princess Sara was designed by Roberto Ferrari, who emulated the original game's design for her. The key artwork was created by Square Enix's Image Studio CGI division under Nomura's supervision.[10]


    The game's existence was leaked by industry insiders in May 2021[11] and was shown during a Square Enix livestream forming part of E3 2021; its platforms are PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows via the Epic Games Store, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.[4][12] A limited time trial version was also launched alongside the announcement, intended as a standalone demo to elicit feedback from players to finetune the game prior to release.[3] During this early promotional stage, Square Enix decided to focus only on the opening section and early premise of the game, keeping other details secret.[6] The trailer met with a mixed response from journalists and fans due to its tone and characters designs.[13][14][15] The demo was balanced so it was approachable using different playstyles, incorporating different job types and difficulty levels.[3] At release, the demo was found to not launch due to corrupted files, prompting Square Enix to work on a fix.[13][16] A patch was released on June 15, fixing the corrupted files and allowing the demo to be played. The patch came included with first-time downloads.[17] Due to the initial troubles, the demo's availability was extended by two days.[6]

    Baffling writing aside, default story difficulty makes this the breeziest Soulslike ever, while combat still carries depth.

    If you're searching for some rhyme or reason for why perpetually angry protagonist Jack whips out a smartphone-type device to play noughties-style nu-metal in the middle of an earnest moment, I'm afraid you won't find it. (Nor does the song ever come up again.) As a dark reimagining of the original Final Fantasy, Stranger of Paradise is indeed strange but it doesn't elicit surprise or wonder, just utter bafflement of how it came to be.

    This can't just be boiled down to the worst protagonist created by Tetsuya Nomura in a long time. As much as the developers may cringe at the memes that have been going around since the game's reveal, it's not an exaggeration when I say most of what comes out of Jack's mouth can be summed up as "I have to kill Chaos" and "Where is Chaos?" with nary a hint of humour or charisma to compensate. I am Jack's complete lack of personality. But in his defence, his allies don't fare any better.

    Compared with the lavish production values of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Stranger of Paradise is straight up B-tier, and while I can abide a camp, trashy romp, much of the presentation just had me laughing for all the wrong reasons. There are shoddily edited cutscenes where audio cuts abruptly, poor audio mixing where dialogue is drowned out by the music, and - despite being an action game - I recommend sticking with Resolution Mode, as visuals are distractingly blurry in Performance Mode, which also has problems maintaining a solid 60FPS.

    Then there's the hilariously dreadful script itself. Characters speak either in nebulous jargon or with confused grunts and false-start umms and hmms - the latter not an uncommon tic in Final Fantasy voice-acting but no less irritating. In fairness, the original 8-bit JRPG was hardly known for deep storytelling, where four Warriors of Light come together to rid the world of Chaos (in a twist, Stranger of Paradise ends up with five). Render that same scenario in hyper-realistic 3D cutscenes though, and you have to suspend disbelief over the highest mountain when our initial Strangers meet each other for the first time, offer zero character development and motivation, then go straight to corny fist bumps like best buds.

    Stranger of Paradise's saving grace then comes from the gameplay. While mainline Final Fantasy games have already been pivoting towards real-time action, this spin-off goes specifically for the hardcore, Souls-style action that developer Team Ninja, the studio behind Nioh and Nioh 2, is well known for. Indeed, Stranger of Paradise's combat is cut from a similar cloth as Nioh, albeit with some changes that make this a less masochistic affair. This is after all the first in the genre to include difficulty options, where 'story mode' is actually the default, with a further casual option available.

    As someone who's enjoyed pouring over many agonising hours in Elden Ring's dangerous and unforgiving world, and shares the conviction that overcoming those hardships is integral to its design, I have to admit that it's refreshing having the option to breeze through Stranger of Paradise's campaign in a fraction of the time of a typical Soulslike - time which would have otherwise been spent on a slow and brutal journey of death and mastery. Less Dark Souls, more God of War, you might say, an apt comparison when you get to execute foes with over-the-top finishers. I am also Jack's boiling crystallised rage.

    The Break system that allows for these fantastical glory kills isn't just a repurposing of Nioh's Ki gauge. It's also used in a fascinating Soulshield mechanic, where instead of parrying with the exact timing, you can hold for a much more generous window at the cost of your Break gauge. Successful parries not only refill a magic meter used for special attacks (replacing a typical strong attack and also mapped to the right trigger by default) but also allow you to rush in immediately with a counter hit. It's only a shame this tactical rhythm of parrying, countering and special attacks is easily undercut when played in story mode, when you can just recklessly hack and slash instead.

    “Final Fantasy meets Nioh” is in easy assumption to make about Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, given appearances, and while that’s not exactly inaccurate, it’s an incomplete description. Team Ninja’s pedigree and inventive riffs on Final Fantasy staples makes for an action RPG that’s hard to put down, but what really sets Stranger of Paradise apart is the subversive way it approaches its source material. This isn’t your typical origin story; it’s a deconstruction of that first Final Fantasy and a reflection on the legacy it left in its wake—one that’s entertaining, often funny, sometimes biting, but above all, is willing to question its own canon in a way that you don’t often see from a series as high-profile as this.

    Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is absurd, daring, and very entertaining, but its story takes a long time to start, which affects the playing experience from the beginning. You will notice that you shouldn't take the narrative so seriously because it doesn't get you anywhere. Nevertheless, the references and the combat system keep you wanting more because it's a challenging title.

    It’s a mouthful of a title and it’s a weird game. It’s Nioh to the core with Final Fantasy nostalgia smeared all over it. Laugh at the dialogue, stay for the great combat system. It’s not perfect by far, but all it takes is a single great thing to make something shine.

    We finally got to thoroughly test the particular Square Enix experiment in collaboration with Team Ninja. Despite some good ideas, Stranger of Paradise is a mediocre action game, not really inspired and with not in depth mechanics.

    We're not sure if it will be remembered as a huge disaster or as a cult classic. But we're sure of one thing: Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is pure and absolute chaos.

    Stranger of Paradise is mostly just a mess. When the gameplay works, it works surprisingly well, but that wasn’t often enough to make it fun for its entire runtime. It’s hard to make a judgement on the story, mostly because there isn’t much of a narrative, but it’s even more disappointing because I wanted to spend more time with the characters, because they’re far from unlikeable. A grand ode to Final Fantasy it is not, and it fails to appeal to the JRPG lover in me on most counts.

    It's pretty epic I gotta say, it's got the same silliness and charm that metal gear rising has and also its just final fantasy nioh which is cool
