Oh Netflix, somehow you still manage to shock us.

We've spent countless hours on the couch—don't judge—watching true crime documentaries over the years, but Netflix's new doc Our Father, premiering May 11, might be the most insane one yet.

Our Father tells the real-life story of Indianapolis-based former fertility doctor Donald Cline, who admitted to using his own sperm to impregnate unsuspecting patients more than 50 times throughout his career.

The documentary centers on Jacoba Ballard, who began to put the pieces of Cline's misdeeds together after an at-home DNA test revealed she had seven half-siblings. Ballard began corresponding with her new family members and the house of cards started to topple.

"As the group set out to learn more about their curious family tree, they soon discovered the sickening truth," according to Netflix. "Their parents' fertility doctor had been inseminating his patients with his own sperm—without their knowledge or consent."

The real story was even darker than the family could have imaged.

"As Ballard and her newfound siblings realized they've barely begun to untangle his dark web of deceit," said the streamer, "their pursuit of justice lies at the heart of this profoundly unsettling story about an unimaginable breach of trust."

Perhaps the most unsettling part about Our Father is that it's just the latest in a line of documentaries with eerily similar subject matter.

In 2020, HBO released Baby God, a documentary about fertility doctor Quincy Fortier, who used his own sperm to inseminate patients over his 30 year career. Similarly, Baby God featured the stories of the children born as a result Fortier's actions, in their attempt to get answers about their pasts and the continued impact on their families.

Last year, Dutch docu-series Seeds of Deceit told the story of Jan Karbaat, a respected doctor in the world of artificial insemination, who is alleged to have fathered close to 200 children by using his own sperm in patients.

Seeds of Deceit co-producer Monique Busman says the problem persists to this day, especially overseas.

"The law changed in 2004 so people cannot donate anonymously anymore, but there's no central registration. Donors can still go to several clinics," Busman told Variety. "Internationally, there's no central registration, and there's also the whole private sector where donors can just donate online. There was a guy a few weeks ago in the Netherlands who has 250 children. He's donating to women online. It's a warning to show what can happen when there are not enough laws and rules."

As for the subject of the new documentary, Cline was arrested in 2017 on two counts of obstruction of justice for lying to officials about artificially inseminating patients.

"I was scared. I was foolish in my actions and I should not have lied," he said at the time. "I am asking for mercy and compassion for myself."

    Cline served no jail time.

Despite his retirement in 2009, Cline's medical license was revoked in 2018 and he was prohibited from ever applying for reinstatement.

Watch the disturbing true story of Dr. Cline and the lives of the families he forever altered when Our Father premieres May 11 on Netflix.

'Our Father' Netflix film focuses on fertility doctor who used own sperm to impregnate women

The story of the Indianapolis doctor, Donald L. Cline, who inseminated his patients with his own sperm, is coming to Netflix on May 11.

Years ago, several Indiana residents found out their father, who some had believed to be an anonymous sperm donor or the man who had raised them, was actually their mother's doctor: Donald Cline.

Cline, once a well-respected fertility doctor in Indianapolis, used his own sperm to inseminate patients without their knowledge for years. Some became pregnant and unknowingly had Cline's biological children.

The children will soon tell the story in their own words in the Netflix documentary film "Our Father," coming to the streaming service on May 11.

“A top fertility doctor had a sickening secret: he was using his own sperm,” the Netflix synopsis reads. “Decades later, his ‘children’ band together to pursue justice.”

Cline's secret was discovered in 2014, when Jacoba Ballard took a DNA test. Ballard, who had expected to have one or two donor half-siblings, discovered seven other half-siblings — and the story grew more complicated from there.

Ballard’s mother, along with the others, shared a common story: Their mothers had all gone to Dr. Cline, who had told them that they would be inseminated with material from anonymous sperm donor, whose sperm would not be used more than three times to conceive a child.

In 2016, it was discovered that one of Cline’s first cousins was a "close match" to Ballard and the others. Eventually, Ballard and some of her other half-siblings confronted Cline, who admitted to using his own sperm.

By contacting people and piecing together the puzzle, Ballard in 2019 told the Indiana Senate Judiciary Committee that she’s discovered at least 46 half-siblings. But there could be more.

A fertility fraud bill to prevent a situation like the one Cline created for Ballard and her half-siblings was passed and signed into law by Gov. Eric Holcomb that year.

The law made it possible to bring civil action against a doctor up to five years after a person discovers their parentage and makes it a level 6 felony to create a misrepresentation involving a medical procedure, device, drug or human reproductive material.

INDIANAPOLIS — On May 11, Netflix’s new true crime documentary “Our Father” will introduce the world to an unsettling story that many Hoosiers know all too well: The story of donor children searching for answers, of the siblings they never knew they had, of an Indiana fertility doctor in the middle of it all.

In 2015, a woman who believed she was an only child approached FOX59’s Angela Ganote after learning she had at least eight biological brothers and sisters. Searching for answers, Angela’s lengthy investigation would bring to light the crimes of Dr. Donald Cline, a former Indianapolis fertility doctor who used his own sperm to impregnate his patients without their knowledge.

Now, Cline’s story, which has shocked and stunned many Hoosiers since it first came to light thanks to Angela’s investigation, will be the subject of Netflix’s new documentary “Our Father.”

“After a woman’s at-home DNA test reveals multiple half-siblings, she discovers a shocking scheme involving donor sperm and a popular fertility doctor.”

Cline would end up pleading guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice in 2017. During the criminal investigation, Cline admitted to his shocking actions and to intentionally misleading investigators.

In a conversation with Angela Ganote, Cline even said that he didn’t believe he was fathering children, rather helping families who were devastated by being unable to conceive on their own.

During his court hearing, Cline estimated that he used his own sperm for insemination up to 50 times. Jacoba Ballard, the woman who first approached Angela, said that she has uncovered more than 90 siblings, however.

“To me, giving people a voice is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do. When Jacoba came to me seven years ago I was stunned that no one would listen to her. I am beyond honored that she trusted me with her truth. To now see her story about to be shared with the world is empowering. Always fight for truth, be courageous and never give up.”

“Our Father” is produced by Emmy-winning Jason Blum, producer Michael Petrella and directed by Lucie Jourdan. It premieres only on Netflix May 11. Watch the trailer here.
