UFC 276: Expert prediction, best bets for Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway 3

    Andreas Hale 06-29-2022 • 9 min read

After two closely contested fights, Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway will complete their trilogy at UFC 276 on July 2 for the UFC featherweight title.

Volkanovski holds a 2-0 advantage over Holloway, but both fights were incredibly close and could have gone either way. But it's Volkanovski who remains undefeated in his UFC tenure and is the featherweight champion.

As for Holloway, he's coming into this fight looking to reclaim what he believes he should have never lost against Volkanovski. The former featherweight champion was closing in on being arguably the greatest featherweight in the history of the company until he dropped back-to-back decisions to Volkanovski in 2019 and 2020.

The Sporting News takes a closer look at the fight from a betting perspective and offer our pick for the co-main event of UFC 276.

Expert prediction for Volkanovski vs. Holloway

The first two fights between these two were absolute nip and tuck affairs that could have gone either way. There’s a universe where Holloway is still the UFC featherweight champion with a pair of wins over the Aussie fighter. However, that’s not where we are at. Volkanovski holds a 2-0 advantage over Holloway heading into the third fight.

Since their last meeting, both have won two fights in a row, with Holloway winning dominant decisions over both Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez. Volkanovski tore through Chan Sung Jung and won an absolute war with Brian Ortega.

It’s hard to believe that Holloway is actually three years Volkanovski’s junior at 30 years of age but has significantly more mileage in his UFC career.

And that’s where the difference will be.

Although older, Volkanovski is just now entering his tenth year of MMA and has shown significant improvement in each of his fights. Holloway is, for better or worse, Holloway. He remains a phenomenal boxer but lacks significant power. He’s more of a volume puncher who racks up damage as the fight progresses.

This will likely be yet another close fight, and any idea that either fighter can win by submission should be thrown in the trash immediately. Holloway’s last submission win came against Cub Swanson in 2015, while Volkanovski has never scored a submission win during his UFC tenure.

The odds are tantalizing but highly unlikely.

A knockout for Holloway seems improbable as well considering that Volkanovski’s only loss came in his fourth pro fight back in 2013 by knockout. Since then, the champion has been an absolute force with a sturdy chin and formidable resolve.

Volkanovski could score a knockout should Holloway’s mileage finally catch up to him, but the Hawaiian has never been knocked out in his MMA career.

It will likely be another high-octane chess match where both fighters will need to make adjustments. Volkanovski used calf kicks in the first fight to sneak past Holloway, and the rematch found Holloway making adjustments to nullify the kicks, but the champion went to his wrestling.

Holloway’s boxing will once again be on full display, but it will be Volkanovski’s ability to mix things up between striking and wrestling that will see him pick up another victory. The fact that Volkanovski is more seasoned will only see those adjustments made quicker because he knows exactly what Holloway has to offer.

The reality is that Holloway has one path to victory while Volkanovski has more to offer. As long as Volkanovski doesn’t get caught being overwhelmed by the former champion’s volume, he’ll earn another narrow decision.

With Volkanovski sitting as a -200 to win, the only true value is a prop bet that he wins by decision, which is currently at +125.

    Volkanovski vs Holloway betting preview

Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski is coming off his third successful defense of the featherweight title after dominating the “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung in April. Volkanovski took Jung down four times and had a 138-48 edge in significant strikes before the fight was stopped in the fourth round with Jung continuing to eat big punches.

Volk hasn’t lost since 2013, winning 21 straight fights (including 11 in a row inside the octagon). The Australian is making a strong case to be considered the greatest featherweight of all time after racking up victories against Holloway, Chad Mendes, Jose Aldo, and Brian Ortega.

Volkanovski has a background in wrestling and used to compete at the semi-professional level in Rugby League, playing at 214 lbs. Despite now fighting in the 145-pound division, he retains that core strength he unleashes with powerful kickboxing and ferocious ground-and-pound.

How to bet on UFC and MMA

Max “Blessed” Holloway has bounced back from those close defeats to Volkanovski with a pair of unanimous decision victories against Yair Rodriguez and Calvin Kattar. He shattered his own UFC record by landing 445 significant strikes vs. Kattar before outstriking Rodriguez 230-159 last November. He also tapped into his seldom-used wrestling against Rodriguez, taking him down three times and controlling him on the mat for almost seven minutes.

Holloway is just 30 years old but has already fought 25 times in the UFC and successfully defended the 145-pound title three times. He’s 15-3 in his last 18 fights, with his only defeats coming in title bouts against Volk and Dustin Poirier (at lightweight).

Blessed is a long and rangy fighter with terrific kickboxing ability. He also has a solid chin, high-volume output, and phenomenal cardio.

    Prediction: Holloway

This should be an incredible trilogy bout between two elite fighters who have separated themselves from the other contenders atop the featherweight division. The first fight between these two was relatively close with two judges scoring it 48-47 for Volkanovski while the other curiously gave it a more lopsided 50-45. The big deciding factor in that bout was calf kicks, with Volkanovski landing a whopping 75 and Holloway rarely defending them. The rematch was even more competitive with a split decision going Volkanovski’s way but 18 of 27 media outlets scored it in favor of Holloway.

Alexander Volkanovski has bested Max Holloway the first two times for the Featherweight Championship, but Holloway has looked dominant in his past two wins. Can the third time be the charm?

Here are the odds for this championship fight from WynnBET Sportsbook:

Max Holloway vs. Alexander Volkanovski Odds, Total

Max Holloway vs. Alexander Volkanovski Prediction and Pick

While the first fight was a clear Volkanovski decision, the second one was razor thin even though it went the away of the Aussie champion.

Now, they meet once again with the Featheweight strap on the line. Since he bested Holloway for the second time, Alexander 'The Great' has been on a tear, dominating Bryan Ortega and Korean Zombie en route to two victories.

Volkanovski gives up five inches of height, but has two more inches of reach, negating Holloway's typically staggering length and striking advantage. While 'Blessed' looked fantastic defeating Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez, Volkanovski has taken his game to a whole different level.

Both men are outstanding and amongst the best technical strikers in the sport, however Volkanovski was able to breakthrough and land three takedowns after failing to land any of his four attempts in the first title match.

I'm not going to lay the price with the champion, as Holloway is more than capable of getting his hand raised, but I wouldn't rule out Volk getting a third decision victory as underdogs are just 5-18 in UFC trilogy fights.

Report: Bruins to hire Jim Montgomery as new head coach

The Boston Bruins are expected to name Jim Montgomery as the team's new head coach on Friday, according to ESPN's Kristen Shilton and Greg Wyshynski. Montgomery, 53, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the St. Louis Blues. Prior to that, he was head coach of the Dallas Stars for just over one season. After leading the team to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in his first season with the team, Montgomery was fired in his second season due to "unprofessional conduct inconsistent with the core values and beliefs of the Dallas Stars." In January 2020, Montgomery released a statement saying the Stars' decision was "the appropriate call" and he announced that he'd enter a rehab facility to address his abuse of alcohol. During his brief stint as the Stars' head coach, the team was 61-43-10 in regular season games and 7-6 in the playoffs. Boston reached the postseason in each of the last six seasons under coach Bruce Cassidy but lost in the first round twice and the second round three times. The Bruins reached the 2019 Stanley Cup final, but lost in seven games to the Blues. Cassidy was fired after recording a 245-108-46 record with the team.
