Kim Kardashian has finally addressed accusations that she damaged Marilyn Monroe’s famous “naked” dress when she wore the iconic gown to the Met Gala last month.

“The Kardashians” star, who rendered textile conservators and fashion historians “speechless” upon donning the delicate 1962 gown, said Tuesday on NBC News’ “Today” that she did not damage the dress when she wore it for “minutes” for the red-carpet portion of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala.

Photos showing apparent wear and tear on the historic dress renewed the controversy last week, but Kardashian doubled down on her handling of the “Some Like It Hot” star’s glittering garment and the care that owner Ripley’s Believe It or Not! took in lending it to her.

The media-savvy mogul, who had been mum on the bubbling controversy, started off by saying she couldn’t believe that people on social media didn’t know who Monroe was. That is, apparently, until the reality star represented the iconic midcentury superstar at the gilded glamour-themed affair.

“That was the most shocking thing thing to me and that’s why I was so happy to at least have that opportunity and that Ripley’s gave me the opportunity to share this moment so that ... it could live on,” Kardashian, 41, told co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie after they brought it up.

“I respect her [Monroe]. I understand how much this dress means to American history. And with the [gala] theme being American, I thought, ‘What is more American than Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday” to the president of the United States?’” she said.

Monroe’s souffle Jean Louis dress, sketched by a young Bob Mackie, has been described as a “stunt” dress and “the original naked dress.” The “Seven-Year Itch” star had to be sewn into the piece ahead of her 1962 performance at a Madison Square Garden fundraiser that took place a few months before her death. That’s when she sang a breathless “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy, to whom she was rumored to be romantically linked.

Ripley’s denies Kim Kardashian damaged Marilyn Monroe’s dress at Met Gala

    June 16, 2022

Monroe was the only person who had ever worn the gown. Because of its historical significance, conservators and historians lamented the garment’s gala outing, fearing that Kardashian wearing it would set back preservation efforts. They argued that even microscopic damage could have long-term effects on the garment. (Mackie also told Entertainment Weekly that Kardashian wearing it was “a big mistake.”)

Ripley’s claimed that it took “great care to preserve this piece of history,” despite earlier footage showing the Skims founder not able to pull the dress up on her body during a fitting and before-and-after photos that upset fashion historians anew.

“I mean, it was such a process,” Kardashian tried to explain Tuesday. “I had to change. ... I showed up to the red carpet in a robe and slippers. And I put the dress on at the bottom of the carpet. Went up the stairs — I probably had it on for three, four minutes — and then I changed right at the top of the stairs.”

Interjected Kotb: “So all of the [controversy], we keep seeing stuff like ‘the dress is ruined,’ ‘the dress is this... .’ All of that is not true?”

“No, and I mean, Ripley’s, we worked together so well,” Kardashian said. “There was handlers in gloves that put it on me.”

Ripley’s, a privately owned, for-profit attractions company that owns Monroe’s gown, also insisted last week that Kardashian “did not cause damage to Marilyn Monroe’s famed ‘Happy Birthday’ dress from 1962" and that Kardashian wore a duplicate gown for the remainder of the event. Ripley’s said it did not pay her to wear the dress for the event and Kardashian didn’t pay the organization; instead, Kardashian opted to make a donation to charitable organizations on Ripley’s behalf.

They called it! Kim Kardashian really did damage that iconic Marilyn Monroe dress

    June 14, 2022

“I looked at it like a role and I really wanted to wear this dress. Like, it was really important to me,” Kardashian added Tuesday, also addressing her dramatic 16-pound weight loss to fit into the gown — another controversy her Met Gala showing yielded.

“And it actually taught me a lot about my lifestyle and my health and since then, afterwards, I continue to eat really healthy. I’m down 21 pounds now. I’m not trying to lose any more weight but I have more energy than ever, I cut out so much sugar, a lot of junk food I was eating, I didn’t even realize it ... and I just completely changed my lifestyle.”

Kim Kardashian is putting to rest any rumors that she damaged the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress she wore for less than five minutes at the Met Gala last month.

The reality star and beauty mogul addressed the online chatter that the dress had missing crystals and damaged threads after she wore it.

“No, and Ripley’s, we worked together so well,” she said on "TODAY" Tuesday. “There were handlers in gloves that put it on me.”

The owners of the dress, the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum, previously shot down those accusations in a blog post last week, writing that Kardashian’s appearance at the Met Gala “did not cause damage to Marilyn Monroe’s famed ‘Happy Birthday’ dress from 1962.”

Kardashian, 41, also noted that she had the dress on for less than five minutes on the red carpet as she posed for photos alongside boyfriend Pete Davidson.

“It was such a process,” she said. “I showed up to the red carpet in a robe and slippers, and I put the dress on on the bottom of the carpet, went up the stairs. I probably had it on for three minutes, four minutes, and then I changed right at the top of the stairs.”

Monroe wore the dress while serenading President John F. Kennedy with a rendition of “Happy Birthday” at a 1962 fundraiser. Kardashian felt it was a perfect choice for a Met Gala that had a theme of “Gilded Glamour.”

“I respect her,” she said about Monroe. “I understand how much this dress means to American history, and with the theme being American, I thought, ‘What is more American than Marilyn Monroe singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the president of the United States?’”

Earlier this month, Marilyn Monroe historian Scott Fortner, who oversees the Marilyn Monroe Collection, posted what appeared to be before-and-after pics of the dress on Instagram, writing that Kardashian damaged it.

“Without question, the damage is significant,” Fortner wrote.

However, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! officials denied any claims that the dress valued at $10 million was wrecked.

“From the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim got into the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in,” Amanda Joiner, Ripley’s vice president of publishing and licensing, said in a statement.

Kim Kardashian 'ruined' Marilyn Monroe dress at Met Gala, expert says

Kim Kardashian permanently damaged a historic Marilyn Monroe dress after wearing it to the Met Gala, an expert closely familiar with the dress says.

Kim Kardashian accused of damaging historic Marilyn Monroe dress at Met Gala: 'Literally ruined'

    Charles Trepany USA TODAY

Kim Kardashian appears to have permanently damaged a historic Marilyn Monroe dress after wearing it to the 2022 Met Gala, an expert closely familiar with the dress tells USA TODAY.

ChadMichael Morrisette, a visual artist who curates museum and costume exhibits, says he observed irreparable damage to the dress when he saw it on display Sunday at Ripley's Believe It or Not! on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Morrissette says he previously handled the dress in 2016 when he displayed it for Julien’s Auctions, where Ripley's purchased it for $4.8 million.

As a result of Kardashian wearing the dress up the Met Gala steps, Morrisette says the garment now has a damaged zipper, shredded fabric by its hooks, stress on its shoulder straps and is missing beads and sequins.

Morrisette took photos of the dress Sunday, which he shared with Monroe memorabilia collector Scott Fortner, who reposted them on Instagram to compare how the dress looked before Kardashian wore it.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Kardashian and Ripley's for comment.

The skin-tight, sparkling nude dress became part of American history after Monroe wore it while singing "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

"Marilyn wore it one night, and it was fit to her body. It was like skin on her body," says  Morrisette.

Update:Kim Kardashian left historic Marilyn Monroe dress in 'same condition it started in,' Ripley's says

Sixty years later, Kardashian worked with Ripley's to wear it to the Met Gala. According to Vogue, she only wore the dress for a matter of minutes before changing into a replica so as not to damage the original.

“I’m extremely respectful to the dress and what it means to American history. I would never want to sit in it or eat in it or have any risk of any damage to it, and I won’t be wearing the kind of body makeup I usually do,” Kardashian told Vogue at the time. “Everything had to be specifically timed, and I had to practice walking up the stairs.”

In May, Ripley's shared on Instagram that "great care was taken to preserve this piece of pop culture history," adding the "garment's condition was top priority."

Kim Kardashian stunned in Marilyn Monroe's dress at the Met Gala. But at what cost?

But Morrisette says it's clear to any textile expert the dress should not have been worn at all.

"When you're dealing with 60-year-old material and fabric and thread and sequins... everything you do damages it. Every time you display it damages it," he says. "When someone has the audacity to put it on and walk in it up the stairs, you're so ignorant to the history of that piece of fabric that it makes me so angry."

A devoted fan of Monroe who has displayed multiple of her iconic dresses, Morrisette says he became emotional upon seeing the "Happy Birthday" dress in its current state.

"My heart is broken. I literally left Ripley's trying not to cry at what I saw," he says. "I can't believe Marilyn's dress is destroyed."

"This is the dress we have to look at now for the rest of our history," he adds. "You literally ruined the most expensive dress in the world, Kim."
