When it comes to his personal life, the Bridgerton actor keeps both fans and the media in the dark.
He may, however, have a boyfriend, according to various sources, who claim he’s dating fellow actor James Ellis. Despite the fact that he’s been pictured with Ellis, this rumored romance has yet to be confirmed. Bailey is quite active on social media, but there is no evidence of a love relationship on his Instagram. It’s possible that he simply keeps that aspect of his life private.
“Is there any actor out there that thinks they’re a sex symbol? Cringe!” Bailey exclaimed, leaving no mistake about his feelings on the subject. This isn’t to say he doesn’t want to have a romantic life of his own.
Bailey noted in 2019, upon accepting a Laurence Olivier award for his efforts in the musical Company, “LGBT individuals aren’t all that dissimilar. We’re just as nervous, flawed, and longing to fall in love as the rest of the world.”
James Ellis, a fellow actor who has been referred to as his boyfriend by several newspapers, was his date for that evening’s award presentation. Despite the fact that the couple has never declared their relationship, there have been indicators that they may be dating.

They were seen out grabbing dinner together in July 2021, and they did kiss on the night Bailey won his Olivier Award. Aside from that, the Bridgerton star appears to be fairly private about his personal love life, rarely revealing specifics about who he is dating.

Jonathan Bailey is gay, which may come as a surprise to those who only know him as Viscount Bridgerton from the Netflix drama. This is due to the fact that his character is straight in the story. Simone Ashley, who played Kate Sharma on Sex Education, will play the viscount’s new love interest in the upcoming second season.
Bailey has been openly homosexual since 2018, and he recently spoke about what it was like to play a straight role on TV as a gay actor. “I don’t think it should matter what character individuals play,” he told Digital Spy in 2020, “but there is a narrative that’s extremely obvious, that out homosexual men aren’t acting straight in leading roles.”
Bailey, like many other LGBTQ artists, took time to come to terms with his sexuality in a world that rejects it, and then to live his truth openly despite the hardships he knew he would encounter as a result of his sexuality.

Jonathan told GQ in March 2022 that he came out to his family and friends when he was in his early twenties. “At the time [my friend] was informed, ‘There are two things we don’t want to know: if you’re an alcoholic or if you’re gay,'” Jonathan recalls.

“All it takes is one of those people in a position of authority to say something like that, and it ripples through,” Jonathan told the source. “Of course, I had that thinking.” Of course, I thought that being straight would make me happy.”
“I reached a point where I thought, F**k this, I’d much rather be able to hold my boyfriend’s hand in public or be able to put my actual face image on Tinder and not be so anxious about it than getting apart,” he told GQ.

Jonathan Bailey plays the dashing viscount in Netflix‘s steamy period drama, which is based on Julia Quinn’s series of novels, Bridgerton. The second season, from Shondaland and creator Chris Van Dusen, follows the eldest Bridgerton sibling as he sets out to find a wife. Who is Jonathan Bailey?
Bailey is the romantic lead of Bridgerton Season 2. Prior to making his debut as the eldest Bridgerton sibling in Season 1 of the hit Netflix series, the English actor played Lance Miller in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, as well a Jack Patterson in W1A, Sam in Crashing, Flatpack in Campus and Olly Stevens in Broadchurch.
Bailey, born in 1988 in Oxfordshire, England, has not only had roles onscreen, but also onstage. In 2019, Bailey won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for his performance in the West End revival of Company.
Bailey has also hit the stage in King John, Beautiful Thing, South Downs, Girl With a Pearl Earring, The Last Five Years, Certain Young Men and The York Realist. The Netflix star returned to the West End in 2022 starring in Mike Bartlett’s Cock alongside Golden Globe winner Taron Egerton.

When asked what made him want to become an actor, he told Whatsonstage.com in 2012: “I’m not 100% sure. I have three older sisters who definitely encouraged me to lark around. I’m pretty sure they spent their Sundays dressing me up (in suitably androgynous clothing) and forcing me to sing Sister Sledge. They were my heroes growing up – I blame them!”

It appears the viscount might be off the market in real life. While Bailey has seemingly kept his personal life off of Instagram, he has been linked, according to Elite Daily, to James Ellis. The pair was pictured dining out together in July 2021, and James is said to be the individual whom Bailey was seen kissing after being announced the winner of his 2019 Olivier Award.
GQ published a profile on the Bridgerton star in March 2022, noting that he came out to his family and friends in his early 20s. In the interview, Bailey recalled a piece of advice a fellow actor friend of his was given. “At the time he was told, ‘There’s two things we don’t want to know: if you’re an alcoholic or if you’re gay,’” Bailey shared.
“All it takes is for one of those people in that position of power to say that, and it ripples through,” Bailey added. “So, yeah, of course I thought that. Of course I thought that in order to be happy I needed to be straight.”

Speaking with the Evening Standard in 2021, Bailey said that he knew he wanted to be “visible” about his “sexuality, because in all the territories that Netflix goes out in, there might be a boy somewhere that goes, ‘Wait, what?'” “Which is what I didn’t have when I was young,” he shared. “All I know is that I’m happy to keep working really hard and if there are opportunities for representation, and to make that point, then that’s something I’ll always strive to do.’”

“For me I think going on a little adventure, getting a pint, exploring,” Bailey said of a perfect date in a 2021 interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK. “So maybe a ramble or a bike ride or something like that I think is nice. A change of scenery.”
