Our adventures in Hawkins will soon be coming to a close—but not immediately! Stranger Things was renewed for season 5, and we’re not ready to say goodbye. We just got the show back after a massive hiatus between season 3 and season 4, and thank the Demogorgon there’s still more to come.

“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things,” Matt and Ross Duffer wrote in an open letter to fans, per the Hollywood Reporter. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but—as you’ll see for yourselves—we are now hurtling toward our finale.”

Here's everything we know—in case you just finished watching the last eps of season 4 and need intel immediately.

Season 5 will be Stranger Things’ final season

It’s bittersweet but probably for the best. The young cast is much older now. I can’t wait to see what they do next. Heck, I can’t wait to see what the Duffer Brothers do next!

Even if it’s a Stranger Things spin-off, which Variety says might be happening. “We do have an idea for a spin-off that we’re super excited about…but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it,” the Duffers revealed. “We think everyone—including Netflix—will be surprised when they hear the concept because it’s very, very different.” One person did figure it out though. “Finn Wolfhard (Mike)—who is one crazy-smart kid—correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”

What’s going to happen in season 5?

TBD, but the Duffer Brothers have already revealed that a time jump might take place between the seasons to help complete the story.

“I’m sure we will do a time jump,” Ross told TV Line. “Ideally, we’d have shot [seasons 4 and 5] back-to-back, but there was just no feasible way to do that.”

    When is season 5 happening?

According to Variety, sooner rather than later. “During the six-month pandemic hiatus, we outlined season 5 and pitched it to Netflix,” the Duffers also told Variety, “…but the gap should be quite a bit shorter this time, due to the fact that we already have an initial outline and we can’t imagine there will be another six-month forced hiatus.” I should hope not!

How long is it going to be?

I DON’T KNOW AND I’M SCARED. The final episodes of season 4 were super-sized—and how are they gonna top that in season 5? They’re definitely going to try to top that in season 5, right? Jeez Louise. That “Are you still watching?” Netflix thing is gonna pop up mid-episode.

Stranger Things season 4 has not only been the show's biggest and scariest outing yet – it’s also been its most popular, racking up some incredible viewing stats over its opening week of release.

New villain Vecna has been a chilling success, Kate Bush has retaken the charts by storm thanks to the use of her hit Running Up That Hill in ‘that scene’ in episode 4, and the final twists in episode 7 set up the perfect cliffhanger as we wait for Season 4 Volume 2 to arrive on Friday, 1 July at 8am.

But even with two episodes still to be released before season 4 is complete, talk has already begun about the plans for season 5 and how Stranger Things might come to an end.

The series' writers and producers the Duffer brothers have always had an ending and full series plan for Stranger Things, but it has been a closely guarded secret.

Here is everything we know so far about Stranger Things season 5…

What is the Stranger Things season 5 release date?

    Netflix

Season 5 hasn't even started filming, so let's not get too excited just yet about the show's finale.

If we were having a guess, late 2023 feels quite ambitious, but there's a small chance of making that if filming starts soon. It's more likely that we will see the show return in 2024 for its final run.

Is Stranger Things season 5 the final season?

The Duffer brothers confirmed in a letter to fans that the show would bow out with a fifth and final season.

"Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things," they wrote.

"At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but - as you'll see for yourselves - we are now hurtling toward our finale."

Stranger Things season 5 will be the story of the Upside Down

    Netflix

The Duffer brothers have confirmed that season 4 volume 2 will deliver lots of answers about the mysteries of Stranger Things, but one big unanswered question will be the origins of the Upside Down.

That answer is coming, but not until season 5.

"The only thing we don’t fully go into in Volume 2 is Upside Down lore," they told Variety.

"We hint at it. I’m sure someone on Reddit will be able to piece it together. But lots of answers about that will be the basis of season 5."

They also spoke about the significance of the Upside Down being frozen on the day Will Byers went missing - which was revealed in season 4 volume 1.

They added: "[That is ] very significant. We don’t actually resolve that. But that is a huge part of season 5 and we wanted to put that out there and get people talking about it."

Will there be any Stranger Things spinoff series?

    Netflix

Nothing has been confirmed about further additions to the Stranger Things universe, but it would be surprising if Netflix didn't try expanding the franchise which remains the most recognised and successful show on the service.

How many spinoffs or series come after Stranger Things will be largely dependent on the show's creators, Ross and Matt Duffer. But it doesn't sound like the brothers are quite finished with the Stranger Things universe quite yet.

In their letter to fans about the show’s ending, they wrote: "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes."

They also confirmed to Variety: "We do have an idea for a spinoff that we’re super excited about… but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it.”

"We think everyone - including Netflix - will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it's very, very different."

The brothers said that they would be working on the spinoff at the same time as season 5.

"There is a version of it developing in parallel [to season 5]," said Matt Duffer.

"We’re going to start getting into it. You don’t want to do it for the wrong reasons. [But] even if you took the Stranger Things title off it, I would be so, so excited about it. It’s going to be different to what anyone is expecting."

This story contains spoilers for Season Four, Volume Two of Stranger Things.

If you've found yourself back on the Stranger Things hype train after the unbridled trip that was the Season Four, Volume Two finale, then you might not want to read what we're about to drop here. In an open letter to Stranger Things fans via The Hollywood Reporter, the creators behind the series, Matt and Ross Duffer, revealed that Season Five would be its last. “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things, they wrote. "At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but—as you’ll see for yourselves—we are now hurtling toward our finale.”

Don't worry, Stranger Things heads—there's still anywhere from 80 to 120 hours of Stranger Things left, depending on how many volumes the brothers divvy Season Five up into. (That's a joke.)

Here's everything we know about Season Five of Stranger Things so far.

When Will Season Five of Stranger Things Release?

Considering that nearly three years passed between the debuts of the third and fourth seasons—which was partially due to the pandemic—you have to wonder if Stranger Things won't return until 2023. If the Duffer Brothers are planning anything remotely close to the scale of Season Four, it'll most definitely take a while to film.

What Will Happen in Season Five of Stranger Things?

What will happen? What will happen?! Surely we’re all still reeling and/or investing in a mass Kleenex order, so it feels borderline insane to start speculating how Stranger Things will meet its end.

But that’s my job. And you’re still here. So let’s do it. How about we start with the interdimensional rift that turned Hawkins into a disaster site? The war between the Upside Down and Hawkins is fully on. The final shot shows massive, hellish clouds looming above the neighborhood—and a field of flowers slowly dying. It nearly goes without saying that by opening the doorway between the Upside Down and Hawkins, the oft-terrorized Indiana town will slowly morph into the red-and-black hell our favorite kiddos have fought to destroy for the entirety of Stranger Things. TBD how long residents will be able to convince themselves that it was all just an earthquake.

Does the gang have one last fight in them? They’ll have to. Even though Vecna, you know, will be busy creating a new world order, he’ll surely seek out Eleven to get some sweet revenge. Since we’re slowly learning that the Hawkins Lab prodigies essentially have god powers—they can resurrect the dead, I guess!—she’ll most likely level herself up before the final battle. Here’s my one theory: she’ll have some help. And not the Dusty-Bun-with-a-garbage-can-lid kind.

Either Will or Max will develop powers, somehow. Maybe Will’s time in the Upside Down imbued him with abilities he’ll only uncover as he nears adulthood. And Max? After just surviving Vecna’s grasp, maybe the Duffer Bros. will write in a Harry Potter-esque, Boy Who Lived situation, where she’s scarred from the near-death experience, but has some kind of an edge against the baddie because of it. Either way, she’ll probably wake up from her coma soon enough, but Eleven will have to pull more mind tricks to make it happen. However it all goes down, Season Five will most likely pick up with our heroes struggling to put the Upside Down back in the Upside Down—or destroy it entirely.

As if you have any doubt that Vecna will return, the actor behind the monster, Jamie Campbell Bower, seemingly confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the baddie will return in the fifth season. "Let me put it this way: I know about Season Five. Take from that what you will," Campbell said. Want a good laugh? At the time, he teased how Vecna would change in Volume Two. "I think what you will see is more of the human aspect of Vecna," he said. “Let me say that much. And there’s a huge, great, cool thing—I need to keep my mouth closed!—but there’s a huge, great, cool thing you see as well!” A huge, cool, thing, man? Your character turning out to be the singular evil force behind the entirety of Stranger Things is a wee bit more than a huge, cool thing?!

Now, begin your prayer circles, so that none of your favorite characters will die at the monstrous hands of Vecna in the series finale. Brace yourselves for the horror, people.
