It feels like Jujutsu Kaisen 0 came out of nowhere, much like one of the show's signature curses, but before this anime became our new obsession, the story started out in Gege Akutami's manga, which was serialised back in 2017.
Originally titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, these first pages actually came before the main Jujutsu Kaisen story now seen in the regular anime series. And it wasn't until Akutami found success with these comics that he went back and rebranded this first arc as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which has since been adapted into a prequel movie.

Confused yet? While that sounds like a lot to wrap your head around, the film itself is actually quite straightforward.
As a mostly stand-alone prequel, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 assumes that viewers don't know anything about the lore behind this franchise, which almost makes this a new pilot of sorts... Except, this time around, we're (re)introduced to Jujutsu's world on the big screen.
Taking place roughly a year before the anime, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 tells the story of Yuta Okkotsu, a young, troubled student who is plagued by the curse of his late girlfriend. Sensing great potential in Yuta, Satoru Gojo enlists him in Tokyo Metropolitan Technical college to master the Jujutsu arts and help fight curses.
Okkotsu doesn't appear in the anime, or not yet, anyway, but he's still name-dropped regularly throughout season one. Gojo mentions him early on as one of the upperclassmen who could even surpass him one day, much to Itadori's surprise. Aoi Todo also brings Yuta up at one point while describing his ideal opponents in the Goodwill tournament. But beyond that, the hero of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 doesn't appear physically in this initial run of episodes.

The reason why is because Yuta's off working overseas on a mission, which is not uncommon for students of his strength. And because of this, Itadori and his newest friends haven't had the chance to meet Okkotsu yet. However, second-year students like Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki and Panda are all familiar with him, and the genesis of that relationship plays out here in the prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
Beyond these recurring characters, the film also connects to the main show in a much more integral way — but not until the very end.
After Yuta defeats Suguru Geto, a post-credits scene takes us to Africa where Okkotsu is sitting with his former foe, Miguel. Gojo walks in with a message, which seems to hint that it's time for Yuta to come back to school. And this is key because the post-credits scene doesn't occur in the past like the rest of this prequel. What's happening here directly ties into the show's future, setting up Okkotsu's role in season two and possibly three.
Oh, you thought this was the last we were going to see of Yuta?
Don't get too excited though. Okkotsu's debut in Jujutsu Kaisen's main show won't be all jolly and smiley. In the manga, Yuta doesn't show up until after the Shibuya Incident arc, which fans presume will form the bulk of season two. And that's bad news for Itadori, because Yuta is actually there to execute our hero.
Without spoiling too much, Itadori is responsible for a lot of deaths in that storyline, which includes some of his closest friends. So when the two protagonists of this franchise finally meet, there's going to be a lot of tension, to say the least.
How Demon Slayer The Movie sets up bloody season 2
In the film's post credits scene, Gojo might even be explaining Yuta's new mission, but what we don't know yet is whether this will actually take place in season two. Timing-wise, it's also possible that the prequel's final moments might not come into play until season three.
Either way, Yuta voice actor Kayleigh McKee told Digital Spy that she's "very excited" by the idea of exploring all this in future dubs – even if Itadori probably isn't.Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is available to watch in UK cinemas from 18 March, 2022.

What happens in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post credit scene?
Before you jump to the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post credit scene, you’ll first have to listen to King Gnu’s “One Way” during the end credits. Amassing 38 million views on YouTube, it topped Japan’s Billboard Hot 100 charts in January.
It not only sports a catchy tune, but was also commended by Japanese fans for its lyrics, which meaningfully captures the themes of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, such as good versus evil, love and hate, as well as right and wrong.
Once that’s over, you’ll be greeted by… animals.
Zebras. Giraffes. Typical scenes on the savannah that tells you that it is set in Africa.
The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post credit scene then cuts to a busy area in town where we see Yuta Okkotsu, the movie’s protagonist, and Miguel, the antagonist who fought Satoru Gojo on the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons as part of Suguru’s Geto distraction plan.
Despite what we saw earlier in the movie, they’re friendly with each other, as Yuta sets his sword down to join Miguel at the table for a hearty meal by the roadside. Smiling and chatting, they’re abruptly interrupted by Gojo, who they did not expect to see.
Wearing a light colored casual outfit and trademark sunglasses, his appearance will remind you of the present day Gojo that we see in season one of the anime that takes place one year later, hinting at the timeline this scene is set in.
The meaning behind the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post credit scene and its referencesWarning: Spoilers if you have yet to read up to chapter 145 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga and watch season one of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Yuta Okkotsu may be the protagonist of this movie, but he doesn’t appear in season one of the anime, which was first released in 2020 before its prelude story.
He is however, poignantly mentioned multiple times by second year students, and it’s quickly established that he’s overseas on a mission, a common occurrence for high grade sorcerers. Yuji Itadori and crew therefore, have yet to meet him because he’s been away.
The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post credit scene marks the first time we see him animated in the current storyline running in the manga. Specifically, it references this panel in chapter 145 after he’s returned to Japan. In this scene, Yuji, Megumi Fushiguro, and Yuki Tsukumo, among others, are trying to figure out how to rescue Gojo, who has been sealed in a box.

Black Rope is mentioned as a tool that can be used to break one of the gates in the prison realm. If you recall in the movie during the fight with Miguel, Gojo reveals his thoughts to the viewers and mentions that the rope disrupts his sorcery technique, but doesn’t divulge any more details.
Unfortunately, according to Megumi, Gojo had gotten rid of all the Black Rope that was previously in existence.
Yuta chimed in, and added that he actually went to Africa to search for more, but to no avail. At this point, readers are also aware that Miguel was recruited by Gojo after the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, and is now an ally. The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post credit scene therefore, is a teaser to this flashback.
However, fans may have to wait beyond season two of the anime for this scene to be adapted. As season two is likely to cover the entire Shibuya Incident Arc, which takes place over 60 plus chapters, this particular scene in chapter 145 might not only be a hint at what’s to come in season two in 2023, but also a possible season three.

What the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Post-Credit Scene Means for the Series

Spoiler Warning: This article details the Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie post-credit scene
Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie is out this weekend, and you should make sure to sit through the film’s ending credits for the small post-credit scene. While the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 ending feels complete, this isn’t the end to Yuta Okkotsu’s story or rather, to how he impacts the Jujutsu Kaisen world. The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post-credit scene brings viewers to Africa for a small moment. There, we see Okkotsu at a table with former foe Miguel. Then, in walks Gojo, who has a message for Okkotsu, and it looks like it’s time to return.
It’s only a minute-long scene, but it carries a lot of weight for fans of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. If you’re only an anime watcher and looking to fill in the blanks, or if it’s been a while since you’ve read the manga, we’re here to connect the dots for you. While we won’t know what comes to fruition until 2023, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post-credit scene does whet our appetites.
The Shibuya Incident is Closer
There has been some debate amongst Jujutsu Kaisen fans about what Season 2 of the anime will adapt. Right now, anime fans have nearly completed Volume 8. The following parts of the series deal with a series of flashback chapters that look at Gojo and Geto’s time at Jujutsu Tech as students (with some panels directly used in Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie) and introduce Toji Fshijuro. Now, at almost a volume in and of itself, it’s been speculated that this could make up the first cour of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. However, with this end sequence, we see Gojo talking with Okkotsu in Africa, a moment that doesn’t bode well for the kids of Jujutsu Tech. Why not?
Well, you see, the Shibuya Incident Arc is soul-crushing in just about every way. There are deaths and destruction at such a grand scale that I cried at 3 am reading it for the first time. But Okkotsu isn’t in this arc; instead, he comes after completing the arc. By showing this moment in particular, manga readers know precisely what’s coming. While we still don’t know what Season 2 will cover, if Season 1 could cover eight volumes, Season 2 can easily cover the next eight, which would put the series at Okkotsu’s reintroduction. Boom, a post-credits scene that may just tell us what we’re getting in 2023.
The Canon Has Come Full Circle
When I first watched Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, I was confused by the sleepy boy popping up on the screen. And I was even more confused when Gojo, Megumi, and Todo name-dropped Okkotsu, but we never got to see. Now, it’s clear that MAPPA and Gege Akutami were playing the long game, slowly building up small moments so that when you rewatch the series after Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie or watch the series for the first time, it all feels whole. Surprisingly, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 wasn’t available in an English-translated paperback volume until after Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 was already in full swing. But, in Japan, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was the one-shot from Gege that started it all and led to the serialization of the world in Weekly Shonen Jump. So MAPPA clearly shouldn’t only be praised for stellar animation and fight sequences, but forethought as well.
Season 3 Will Feel Like a Long Wait
This is less of what the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post-credit means and more about what will happen if our prediction is correct. Suppose Okkotsu makes a Season 2 appearance. A whole lot of bad has happened. So while this post-credit scene may seem exciting, it’s also proof that Season 2 will end with a bang. You see, during the 50-plus chapters of the Shibuya incident, a series of unfortunate events led to Yuuji Itadori’s execution coming back on the table. And if you haven’t guessed it, Okkotsu is Itadori’s executioner. Okkotsu has come to give Itadori a reckoning for the harm and deaths of those around him, some of which are the deaths of his friends. Deciding to end Season 2 at Okkotu’s arrival will mean the wait for Season 3 will feel infinitely longer than the year between Season 1 and Season 2.
Whether any of this comes to fruition, only MAPPA and Gege know, but for now, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post-credit sequence is enough to get you excited for 2023.
