Is The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air based on the life of Will Smith? Now streaming on HBO Max, the popular 1990s sitcom launched its star's acting career, and created more diversity on network television - and the true inspiration for the NBC series can be found in the iconic opening credits sequence.

When premiered in 1990, Smith had already released three albums (and one won Grammy Award) as part of the hip-hop group He was also just 21 years old upon making his TV debut, and ultimately proved himself on camera over the course of six seasons before transforming into a movie star. Decades later, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's theme song remains timely and relevant, both musically and within culture as a whole. But whereas the lyrics mirror Smith's real-life story, the series' premise was inspired by someone from the east side of Los Angeles - not the west part of Philadelphia.

HBO Max Vs. Disney+: Which Streaming Service Is Better

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is based on the life of executive producer Benny Medina, who's best known as a former member of the group Apollo, and for later working directly under music mogul Berry Gordy at Motown Records. By the late 1980s, Medina was an accomplished musician and businessman before age 30, and his life story was pitched as a TV series in collaboration with the late Jeff Pollack, who later directed the 1990s films Above the Rim (starring Tupac Shakur), Booty Call (starring Jamie Foxx), and Lost & Found (starring David Spade). Ultimately, NBC greenlit The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a show about an black teenager who leaves Philadelphia to live with his rich uncle in Bel-Air, CA. In real life, Medina moved from east Los Angeles to live with a wealthy friend and his family in Beverly Hills.

With the narrative foundation in place, a few tweaks were made for dramatic purposes. Smith joined The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air cast as a fictionalized version of himself: he's from west Philadelphia, and the character has the same name. Crucially, however, the TV version of Will is a teenager with a troubled past, whereas the real-life Will had been making hit records as a teenager. In fact, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the very first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989. So, Smith wasn't quite plucked from obscurity when Medina and company chose him as the series lead. In addition, Medina is gay and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's Will is straight.

The primary story in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air derives from another true story spin. In reality, Medina moved in with a white family rather than a black family. For the sake of originality, and to broaden the series' potential, the host family was changed from white to black. Incidentally, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air addressed deep issues that much of mainstream America wasn't quite familiar with. Through a mix of comedy and drama, Medina introduced new conversations about race and class in the United States, and offered a platform to a variety of up-and-coming performers. Smith is now one of the most most successful American movie stars ever, and his former season 4 co-star, Tyra Banks (Jackie Ames), evolved into an industry mogul (under the guidance of her manager, Medina) upon creating the groundbreaking series America's Next Top Model.

Now, this is a (true?) story all about how Will Smith‘s life got flipped-turned upside down. Bel-Air, the dead-serious reboot of Smith’s OG sitcom The Fresh Prince is now streaming on Peacock. Following Will’s journey into his new life with his aunt and uncle in Bel-Air, the new series takes a deeper look at what life might actually be like, versus the more comedic take in the ’90s. Since the character’s name is literally “Will Smith,” you’re probably scratching your head trying to figure out if this is the real story behind the beloved actor. Let’s take a look.

Bel-Air debuted on Super Bowl night, defying all odds and gaining quite some traction even amidst the hubbub of the game. The show stars Jabari Banks as a 16-year-old Smith, moving back and forth between two different lifestyles. The first three episodes have already debuted, with more already on the way.

Here’s everything you need to know about the true story behind Bel-Air.

Is Bel-Air based on a true story?

Nope. Bel-Air is entirely a work of fiction. It is, however, based on something. Keep reading to find out what.

    What is Bel-Air based on?

Bel-Air is based on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, of course! You might be a little confused because Jabari Banks plays “Will Smith” in the show. But the story behind that Will Smith isn’t actually Will Smith’s story. Smith starred as the character in the original sitcom, and this story just picks up the same sorts of threads. Andy and Susan Borowitz, who created the original story, also co-created Bel-Air.

Is The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air based on a true story?

Kind of. Debuting in 1990, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was loosely based on Will Smith’s real life persona, but all of the episodes are pure fiction. It’s a sitcom, not a biopic!

Where is Bel-Air streaming? How to watch Bel-Air and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air:

Bel-Air is now streaming on Peacock, with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air available to stream on HBO Max.

Developed by Will Smith and Morgan Cooper, ‘Bel-Air’ is a drama series that revolves around Will Smith (Jabari Banks), a West Philly born and raised young man who is forced to move to the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles after he is arrested with a gun and threatened by a notorious drug dealer. In Bel Air, his maternal aunt and her family reside. Will initially gets a massive cultural shock with how life is fundamentally different in Bel Air. He struggles to fit in there while trying to hold on to his inherent identity.

‘Bel-Air’ resonates with the ‘All American’-esque vibe, but it’s not exclusively a sports drama like that show. Basketball is an important part of Will’s life, but ‘Bel Air’ focuses more on Will’s relationship with his aunt, uncles, and cousins. If its gritty and grounded narrative has made you wonder whether it is based on a true story, we got you covered.

    Is Bel-Air a True Story?

Yes, ‘Bel Air’ is based on a true story. However, that story has been heavily dramatized and fictionalized. It’s the reboot of the incredibly popular 90s sitcom ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ which originally aired from 1990 to 1996 on NBC and is now considered a pop culture phenomenon and one of the most important entries in the chronicles of black entertainment in America. The talks of a potential reboot had been floating around for a while. However, Will Smith, the star of the original series, stated for a long time that there would be a reboot only when “hell freezes over.”

His views changed after watching Cooper’s 2019 fan-made trailer of an edgy and dramatized version of the sitcom on YouTube. In Cooper’s short, the show is simply titled ‘Bel-Air,’ which the producers decided to dub the reboot. There are quite a few differences between the original show and the reboot. For instance, Will is a top-tier student-athlete in ‘Bel-Air,’ while the lead in the ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ version is academically lazy, despite being as bright as his cousin Carlton. Uncle Phil is younger and suaver in the reboot, while Hilary is an influencer, and Carlton is also a top-tier student-athlete.

The race and class issues that the reimagined version chooses to address do belong in the 2020s America. The original show was based on the life of record executive and talent manager Benny Medina. He developed it along with his partner Jeff Pollack. Even in the 90s, there were many dissimilarities between what happened to Medina in real life and what was shown on screen. Medina spent his childhood in the impoverished East Los Angeles before relocating to Beverly Hills to live with the family of an affluent white friend.

Over the years, there have been several TV shows with the premise of black characters coming to live with white families. Medina and his collaborators wanted to do something different, so they changed the hosting family from wealthy white to wealthy black. In an interview given to Ebony magazine in 1991, Medina explained that this allowed them the opportunity to “explore black-on-black prejudice as well as black class differences.”

When Will Smith, already a popular rapper under the stage name The Fresh Prince, came on board, the show became a fictionalized version of his life. Will’s cousins were inspired by the daughters of Quincy Jones, who was one of the executive producers on the show. Meanwhile, Carlton was named after Carlton Cuse, a filmmaker and a close friend of the series co-creator Andy Borowitz.

In mid-2021, Smith told the newcomer Banks that he had been selected to play Will in ‘Bel Air’ during a video call. He congratulated the younger man, stating, “You got a fantastic road ahead of you, and I am looking forward to be an asset for you in this process as you build out your life and build out your career.” Clearly, ‘Bel Air’ has been developed from a true story that has undergone much fictionalization.
