    Shirley MacLaine's Manhattan Murder Mystery

The star steals the show in the new season of Only Murders in the Building, and she's just getting started.

BY ADAM RATHE JUN 28, 2022

When Only Murders in the Building, the hit Hulu comedy about a trio of podcasters investigating suspicious deaths in their Manhattan co-op, comes back for its second season on June 28, the mystery central to the drama involves finding out who it was that offed Bunny Folger, the grouchy board president of the fictional Arconia apartment house. (The three have been accused themselves, of course.) But, what lurks at the heart of that grisly crime might not be the season’s most exciting surprise. That honor belongs to Shirley MacLaine.

Playing Bunny’s mother, the imperious and impeccably dressed Leonora Folger, MacLaine appears in the season’s second episode like a silver-haired hand grenade to launch her own investigation into her daughter’s demise—and reveal some unseemly secrets about the building’s history—and takes no prisoners when dealing with the amateur sleuths, played by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. She’s a smartly dressed, tough-talking broad, and in MacLaine’s hands, she arrives to deliver an intoxicating cocktail of elegance and attitude.

Shirley MacLaine stars as Leonora Folger—the mother of murdered board president Bunny—in the new season of Only Murders in the Building, airing now on Hulu.

“I’m an old friend of [series creator] John Hoffman and I guess if he was writing a grocery check he would think, OK, somehow let’s include Shirley,” MacLaine says from her home in New Mexico. “He’s very creative and he’s a good friend, so he wrote this part. And I love this character, I think she’s terrific.”

Was taking on a TV series in this so-called golden age of streaming something MacLaine— who’s won an Academy Award, an Emmy, and six Golden Globes and written 15 books, including three bestselling memoirs—felt passionate about? “I don’t know about that, but I just loved the character and wanted to work again with Marty and Steve, to be in Manhattan doing something creative, and I wanted to see how John would be as a director; he really did a good job. I just wanted to do it, period. Are you writing this down?”

MacLaine is supposed to be in New York City, promoting her new film American Dreamers at the Tribeca Festival, but stayed home instead to avoid the crowded theaters and close-talking cocktail parties a movie premiere entails. “My doctor said no,” she explains, “they thought it was better not to.” Luckily no such medical advice kept her from Manhattan late last year when she was filming the series—not that she did much in the way of living it up.

“Listen, babe, this was in the middle of Covid,” she explains. “I didn’t go anywhere. I have to say how incredible our crew was, how darling and sweet and protective and disciplined. When I was there filming, the crew was the whole city to me, or at least it was during the pandemic.”

Still, New York holds a special place for MacLaine. “I’ve spent so much of my life there, I’ve done so much learning,” she says of the city. “I went to Manhattan when I was 16 from Arlington, Virginia, where all the politicians make shit up. I loved how New York gave me discipline and organization and a sense of survival and creativity. It was the future.”

The Arconia, where Only Murders plays out, isn’t too far from another fictional address on MacLaine’s resume—the imaginary Upper West Side address where The Apartment, the 1960 Billy Wilder movie that earned her an Academy Award nomination, was set.

“Which apartment,” she asks when alerted to the coincidence. “Oh, the movie I did? OK. I’d have to check my script to see what that address was, I don’t know.”

I think it was an imaginary address on West 66th Street, I tell her. “Is it really? Sixty-sixth street? That would be some little dig at the world working with Billy Wilder,” she explains. “Sixty-six is a bad number.” Oops, it was actually 51 West 67th Street. “Well, that’s different. That’d be an improvement. Now you’ve got my mind going to The Apartment, and you don’t want me to do that. It seems to be everybody’s favorite movie that I’ve done, and I’d like to think I’ve done more than that.”

'Only Murders' Season 2: Shirley MacLaine was 'a complete trip'

Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez are having exactly as much fun as it looks like they're having on Hulu's true crime comedy.

In this saturated true-crime market, innovation can be a challenge. Then Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez walked into the Arconia.

The trio’s unique and surprising chemistry has fueled Hulu’s comedy-murder mystery “Only Murders in the Building.” And it builds in Season 2.

The famous whodunnit threesome — former TV star Charles (Martin), struggling Broadway producer Oliver (Short) and troubled artist Mabel (Gomez) — ever the podcast trendsetters, have become persons of interest in a fresh murder case.

The first season of the comedy introduced viewers to the three neighbors, all fans of a true-crime podcast, who banded together to solve a killing that happened at their Upper West Side co-op — launching their own podcast in the process. After solving the case, Charles, Oliver and Mabel now find themselves suspects in a fresh case: the murder of their co-op board president, Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell), whom Mabel found in her apartment, stabbed with a knitting needle.

In an interview this week, Martin, Short and Gomez talked about the new season, the show’s multigenerational appeal and sharing the screen with Shirley MacLaine. The following has been edited for clarity.

‘Only Murders’ delivers a model second season: More of the same, but different

    June 28, 2022

The first season was a fresh, hilarious and insightful take on the true-crime genre that set a high bar for the second season. I’m curious what intrigued you about Season 2 and the mystery surrounding who killed Bunny.

Short: Season 1 ended with our arrests, so obviously that was already set up: Are we going to spend the rest of our lives in jail? Are we gonna get out? And obviously since we didn’t do it, who did it? It’s set up very cleverly.Gomez: I just wanted to keep knowing what was happening, so it was really great. We kind of picked up right where we left off.Martin: I’m dedicated to solving a murder per season. I think it’s very satisfying for the audience. And then you sort of tease another murder, if one happens, for the next season.Selena, as a fan of the genre who has attended things like CrimeCon, did you feel like that gave you added insight into how to play a person of interest?Gomez: Oh, yeah. I love escape rooms, and I was just in a few the other night and as soon as I walked out, my friends looked at me and said, “You are completely Mabel in that escape room.” I’m just fascinated with clues and solving things and trying to figure out the who, the why, the what.

The whole premise of the show is basically three characters that were a little bit lonely but found this common ground, and I think that’s what the bulk of the show is — that you know they all have this in common. And now they’re all being accused of murder, so it brings us closer.

Season 2 has some new faces, including Miss Shirley MacLaine. How quickly did she settle into the groove?Short: Oh, it was a complete trip. What I love about Shirley is that she’s filled with a lifetime of show business stories that she will share with you right away. There’s an immediate looseness to her, and intimacy, and she asked questions where she actually wants the answer. She’s interested in everything about life. That’s what’s made her so remarkable.Martin: I just had a lifetime fascination with her from “The Apartment,” which I thought she was so great in, so vulnerable — an instant great actress. So it was an honor for me to work with her, and she was very kind to me. I don’t know if it was an honor for her to work with . But she acted like it.I have multiple text chains going for this show that span generations. When did you have a sense of the viewer demographics? Martin: I have no idea what the demographics are. No one’s ever told me. I’m always fighting for taking our hard language out, and everybody else is fighting to get it in. So I never know quite where it falls. It’s kind of a family show, and it’s kind of not.Gomez: After doing the first season, the reaction I got really was warm and lovely and surprising. I don’t know, I would say like 15 and older and beyond.Martin: I have heard, in my day, though, [of] a 14-year-old using the F-word. I read about it.Martin, if Steve is trying to tone down the language on the show, are you trying to amp it up?

    The Arconia welcomes a legend.

Acting legend Shirley MacLaine has joined the cast of Only Murders in the Building for Season 2, adding to the already stacked cast. Vanity Fair recently gave us a look into her role in the upcoming season.

MacLaine will play the mother of recently murdered Arconia apartment resident Bunny, the former board president of the building and frequent opponent to the podcasting amateur sleuths. The first season of the series explored the mystery surrounding the murder of resident Tim Kono and the investigation that arose after the death. Three otherwise strangers, Mabel, played by Selena Gomez, CharlesHaden, played by Steve Martin, and Oliver, played by Martin Short, take it upon themselves to solve the crime and document their findings in a hodgepodge podcast. The first season saw the group successful in their investigation, but ended with Mabel being found with Bunny's body, covered in blood. How the second season will unfurl this new mystery is yet to be seen.

In his interview with Vanity Fair, co-creator John Hoffman stated that the second season will dive deeper into “this understanding about place and time and history, and how lives are lived in places like that—in a communal way, in an apartment building—with secrets and great mysteries that factor into them.” The season will continue to explore the series leads' relationship to the building, and how it is even more interlinked than perviously thought.

Hoffman also discussed acting legend Shirley MacLaine's highly anticipated role in the new season. The role is MacLaine's first television series role since her recurring role on the series Glee nearly a decade ago. MacLaine was apparently so taken by the role on Only Murders in the Building that she traveled all the way from her home in New Mexico to film her part.

Of her work on the new season Hoffman said,“[s]he’s 88 now and as sharp as they come.” He continued, “[t]he beautiful thing for me was [Steve Martin] saying, before she arrived, ‘I cannot believe I’m going to get to do things with Shirley MacLaine.’ Then he went on and on about seeing her when he was young. That really moved me.” And Martin's hero-worship of MacLaine is not unwarranted. MacLaine has won an Oscar, an Emmy, and six Golden Globes, among other accolades. Her career has spanned over seventy years.

However, until then we won't be able to see what comes of the intersection of Martin and MacLaine until June 28, 2022, when the second season of Only Murders in the Building returns to Hulu.
