the US Constitution seems to be a major stumbling block for the democrat progressives, since they believe it is obsolete. While not all of the republicans are on the same page, I want to believe that most of them still want to honor their Oath to preserve and protect it.

Not being a Republican or Democrat and in the cause of brevity, I would say that the basic difference is that one Party holds closer to the Constitution than the other. One Party holds to the idea, contained in the Constitution, that the US government should be more limited to the thirty, articulated, authorities and responsibilities and the other does not.
Article #10 of the Constitution says this, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Both parties are against individual rights. They both want to control you and want more power. They only differ in what they want to contrl the most. The Republicans want to control your mind (what God wants, right to life, sexual partners, etc.,) and the Democrats want to control your money (soak the rich, pay the poor, control the businesses, etc.) But in doing so they are both altrustic and have no problem taking your earned property, violently if necessary, to further their own desires and power, all in the name of "the common good."
