Announce notifications with Siri on AirPods or Beats

When you're wearing your AirPods or compatible Beats headphones, Siri can announce incoming notifications from apps such as Messages and Reminders, and from supported third-party apps. Then you can reply instantly, hands-free.

Announce notifications with Siri on AirPods or Beats

When you're wearing your AirPods or compatible Beats headphones, Siri can announce incoming notifications from apps such as Messages and Reminders, and from supported third-party apps. Then you can reply instantly, hands-free.

    What you need

You can have Siri announce your incoming notifications with these headphones:

    AirPods Max

    AirPods (2nd generation) or later

AirPods Pro Beats Fit Pro Powerbeats Powerbeats Pro Beats Solo Pro

Your compatible headphones need to be paired with one of these devices:

iPhone with iOS 15 iPad with iPadOS 15

    Turn on Announce Notifications

    Open the Settings app.

    Tap Notifications.

    Tap Announce Notifications.

    Turn on Announce Notifications.

    Use Announce Notifications

With this feature turned on, Siri announces incoming notifications from apps such as Messages and Reminders, and from supported third-party apps. Siri reads your incoming notifications out loud when your headphones are connected to your iPhone or iPad, you're wearing them, and your device is locked.

If the app that you're using classifies a notification as time sensitive or as a direct message, Siri plays a tone, then announces the notification automatically. You can also choose which notifications Siri reads:

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications.

    Tap Messages.

Select either Time Sensitive and Direct Messages or All Notifications.

If you customize Control Center on your iPhone or iPad to include Announce Notifications, you can use Control Center to turn the feature on or off quickly.

If you're receiving multiple notifications at once, you can stop Siri from announcing them all by taking out one of your earbuds or removing your headphones.

    Reply to notifications

For apps in which you can send a reply, such as Messages, you can reply to the notifications that Siri announces on compatible headphones or in a vehicle that supports CarPlay:

Wait for Siri to read the notification. Siri then listens for your reply.

Tell Siri that you'd like to reply, then speak your message. Say something like "Reply 'I'm on my way'" or "Tell her 'I'll meet you there.'" When you stop talking, Siri reads your reply back to you and asks if you want to send it.

If you don’t hear Siri announcements

If you don’t hear Siri announce your notifications, try these steps:

Make sure that you're using a compatible device.

Make sure that your AirPods or your compatible Beats headphones are paired to your device in Settings > Bluetooth.

Go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and make sure that Announce Notifications is turned on.

Make sure that your iPhone or iPad is locked and its screen is dark. Siri doesn't announce messages if you're using your device.

Apple's AirPods have a very convenient feature that uses Siri to read messages aloud. The feature is optional and initially decided when first setting up AirPods. However, users may not be fully aware of how it works or may simply decide later on that this is not a feature for them. Fortunately, Apple does allow the setting to be changed at any time.

Apple first released AirPods in 2016. In the years since, AirPods have gone on to have great success. Unlike most Apple devices, the earbuds are compatible with Android phones. In fact, AirPods can be used with any device that supports Bluetooth 4.0 or higher. That specification for Bluetooth has been around since 2010, so mostly any phone, tablet, or computer made in the last few years will be compatible. One of AirPods' many features is a message reading ability called, 'Announce Notifications.' And that is exactly what it does. When a message is received, Siri will play a tone via the AirPods. The name of the sender is read aloud. If the message is fairly short, Siri will read the entire message. For a longer message, only the sender's name and the fact that they sent a message are announced.

How To Disable AirPods Automatic Switching For Mac & Apple TV

AirPods are intelligent wireless earbuds that can read messages to the wearer. It's a great feature, but sometimes users may want to switch it off. This isn't difficult, but it may not be obvious where to look for the control. Also, it's helpful to know that there are two ways to access the control. The shortest method requires a one-time setup before use, but will save several steps in the long run. First, open the Settings app on a paired iPhone or iPad, scroll down the page, and tap on 'Control Center.' Look for the 'Announce Notifications' option and tap the '+' icon to add it to the Control Center. Now, users can enable and disable the feature just by visiting the Control Center and tapping the Announce Notifications icon.

The Long Way (& Why You Might Want To Switch Off Siri)

    @[email protected]#=img=#

The longer method is useful if switching Siri announcements won't be accessed often (or if the user just prefers to keep the Control Center less crowded). From the Settings app, tap 'Notifications' and then tap 'Announce Notifications.' Here the feature can be switched on and off as desired. It's worth mentioning that messages can work both directions. After listening to Siri read a message, the user can tell Siri to reply, then speak the response that should be sent. It's very convenient as long as the wearer has the freedom to speak aloud, but disabling Announce Notifications also removes this reply functionality. Additionally, users can browse the list of supported apps and choose to turn Announce Notifications on/off on a per-app basis.

The best part with these steps? They're the same regardless of which AirPods someone's using. Whether it's the normal AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max, the controls for Announce Notifications are in the exact same place. This is also true of select Beats earbuds, including the Beats Fit Pro, Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Solo Pro. No matter which earbuds you have, the Announce Notifications settings don't change.

There are a few reasons as to why someone would want to turn off these Siri announcements. For example, message announcements might become annoying if too many come in too quickly. Likewise, if the user is involved in an engaging audiobook or enjoying great music, there may be a need to stop the interruptions. While this feature can be customized to only allow messages from specific apps, there may be times when interruptions will not be appreciated regardless of where the notification's coming from. It's always nice to have the choice with these things, and Apple has done just that.

    What to Know

On iPhone: Settings > Control Center > tap - next to Announce Messages with Siri.

Swipe up on Apple Watch and tap the Announce Messages with Siri icon to disable.

The Announce Messages with Siri feature will read incoming text messages from your iPhone or Apple watch automatically.

This article shows you how to stop Siri from reading texts through your AirPods and other compatible earphones.

How to Turn Off AirPods Reading Messages from your iPhone

There are two ways to turn off your AirPods reading your messages from your iPhone:

You can permanently remove Announcing Messages with Siri from the Control Center using Settings; or

You can turn off or temporarily disable Announce Messages with Siri using the Control Center.

If you never want to use the Announce Messages function, you can remove it from the Control Center. Go to Settings > Control Center and find Announce Messages. Tap the - (minus) next to the Announce Messages.

Once you remove it from the Control Center, Siri will not announce any incoming messages. The only way to use Announce Messages with Siri is to re-enable it again using the same steps.

Alternatively, you can temporarily disable the Announce Messages feature using the Control Panel on your iPhone. Swipe down from the screen's upper-right corner to open the control panel and then tap the Announce Messages icon to disable it. It will stay disabled until you turn it back on.

If you prefer, you can also disable it for a specified amount of time. Tap and hold the Announce Messages icon until a menu appears. From there you can choose Mute for 1 hour or Off for the day. If you select either option, it will reactivate the Announce Messages feature after the specified amount of time.

How to Turn Off Message Reading on Airpods Using Your Apple Watch

One convenient feature of AirPods is using them with your Apple Watch, even when your iPhone isn't nearby. Fortunately, you can also disable the Announce Messages with Siri feature from your Apple Watch too, and it works just like using the Control Center on the iPhone.

If you're using compatible headphones other than Apple AirPods, these instructions may not work for turning off Announce Message through your watch. You may have to use the steps listed above using your iPhone.

To access the Control Center on your Apple Watch, swipe up from the bottom. Then, tap the Announce Messages with Siri icon to turn the feature off. Alternatively, you can tap and hold the icon to open a menu that allows you to choose whether you want to disable Announce Messages for 1 hour or the whole day. Whichever option you select, Announce Messages will automatically turn back on when that time is expired.
