In Preview on your Mac, you can add text to a PDF form, then add your signature.

Fill out and sign a PDF form in Preview on Mac

Some PDFs are forms you can fill out and then print or send. (PDF forms that aren’t editable won’t allow you to select or enter text.) If a form requires a signature, you can add your signature to the PDF.

    Open Preview for me

    Fill out a PDF form

In the Preview app on your Mac, open the PDF form.

Click a field in the form, then type your text.

If you save the form (by choosing File > Export), you can close it, open it later, and continue to fill it out.

    Create and use signatures

To sign PDFs, you can capture your signature using your trackpad, the built-in camera on your Mac, or your iPhone or iPad.

In the Preview app on your Mac, click the Show Markup Toolbar button (if the Markup toolbar isn’t showing), then click the Sign button .

Follow the onscreen instructions to create and save your signature.

Create a signature using your trackpad: Click Trackpad, click the text as prompted, sign your name on the trackpad using your finger, press any key, then click Done. If you don’t like the results, click Clear, then try again.

If your Mac has a Force Touch trackpad, you can press your finger more firmly on the trackpad to sign with a heavier, darker line.

Create a signature using your computer’s built-in camera: Click Camera. Hold your signature (on white paper) facing the camera so that your signature is level with the blue line in the window. When your signature appears in the window, click Done. If you don’t like the results, click Clear, then try again.

Create a signature using your iPhone or iPad: Click Select Device to choose a device (if more than one is available). On your device, use your finger or Apple Pencil (on iPad) to sign your name, then click Done. If you don’t like the results, click Clear, then try again.

If your Mac has a Force Touch trackpad, you can press your finger more firmly on the trackpad to sign with a heavier, darker line.

If you use VoiceOver, the built-in screen reader on Mac, you can add a description of a signature when you create one. This is especially useful if you create multiple signatures and need to distinguish between them to ensure you use the intended signature. Before you click or tap Done, click the Description pop-up menu, then choose a description, such as Initials, or choose Custom to create your own description.

Click the Sign button , then click the signature to add it to your PDF. (If you used VoiceOver to add descriptions of your signatures, VoiceOver reads the descriptions as you navigate the list of signatures.)

Choose the signature you want to use, drag it to where you want it, then use the handles to adjust the size.

If you use iCloud Drive, your signatures are available on your other Mac computers that have iCloud Drive turned on.

    Delete a saved signature

In the Preview app on your Mac, click the Show Markup Toolbar button (if the Markup toolbar isn’t showing).

Click the Sign button , position the pointer over the signature, then click the X to the right.

The signature is deleted from all apps that use Markup on your Mac computer. If you have iCloud Drive turned on, the signature is also deleted from your other Mac computers that use iCloud Drive.

Signing your business documents used to be easy. With the rise in online paperless documents, including your signature can be tricky. However, Apple's Mac OS X includes user-friendly signature creation embedded in the native Preview app. An image of your handwritten signature is captured once and can be included with a click in thousands of documents.

    Capture Your Signature

    1.

Open the Preview app located in your Applications folder.

    2.

Sign your signature in the center of a blank sheet of white printer paper.

    3.

Select "Preferences" from the "Preview" menu to open the Preferences panel. Select the "Signatures" tab.

    4.

Click the "Add Signature" plus button at the bottom of the list of signatures.

    5.

Hold the signed sheet of paper in front of the built-in camera on your Mac, typically located above the screen. Hold a few extra sheets of paper behind the signed sheet to keep light from shining through and decreasing the quality of the captured image. Click "Accept" to capture the signature.

    Insert Your Signature

    1.

Make the "Edit" toolbar visible by clicking the "Show Edit Toolbar" at the top of the window.

    2.

Select the "Signature" annotation tool from the Edit toolbar or by opening the "Tools" menu, "Annotate" submenu and selecting "Signature."

    3.

Click and drag to draw out a box for your signature in the place you wish to sign the document. Move or re-size to perfect the position.

    Warnings

Annotations layers in Preview may not be compatible with all PDF programs.

Export your signed document by selecting "Print" and clicking the "Save as PDF" option. This flattens the layers and makes sure everything is visible.

Your Mac already has everything you need to quickly sign a document.

The easiest way to sign your documents is on your computer. All you have to do is download the right document, sign with your finger and then send the document via email or print it out. It's a streamlined process, but if you're a Mac owner, you may be signing your documents the wrong way.

You might be using third-party software like Adobe Acrobat Reader to sign your important documents like lease papers or taxes, but there's another, easier way to do it. Using the Preview application, which comes built-in to MacOS, you can sign pretty much any document in seconds.

Watch this: How to sign a PDF on your Mac in a few easy steps

The first step is to input your signature on your Mac (more below). Then every time after that you'll simply select the signature you saved, and your Mac will apply it to the document that needs to be signed. Easy peasy.

Add your signature with just a couple of clicks.

How to input your digital signature on your Mac

The first thing you'll need to do is add your signature to your Mac, which you can do within Preview. To start:

Open the document you want to sign in Preview.

Now, click on the Markup icon.

    Next, click the Signature button.

    Select Create Signature.

Apple will sync your signature with your iCloud account, making it available in Preview on any Mac you've signed in to with your Apple ID.

You have three options to create a digital version of your signature:

Trackpad: Select this option if you want to write your signature on your Mac's trackpad using your finger.Camera: Sign a piece of paper and then hold it up to your Mac's camera. Preview will recognize your writing, then digitize it.iPhone/iPad: Select this option to write your signature on a connected device.

Move and resize your signature while adding it to your document.

Now that setup is done, your signature is in the system and you'll see just how fast it is to sign documents in Preview.

With your document open in Preview, follow the same process we just outlined, except that after clicking on the signature button, click on your signature.

A small box that includes your signature will show up in the document, which you can then drag around and resize. After you've lined up your signature, you can save the document and then share it.

I timed how long it takes me to open a document and click the appropriate buttons to add a signature, and I was able to get it done in under a minute, and that includes adding the date by clicking on the add text button in Preview.
