While Priscilla Presley went on to become a successful actress and businesswoman, her name is inextricably linked with rock 'n' roll history and its leading man, Elvis.

When Priscilla Beaulieu was 14 years old, she met the already-famous Elvis Presley who was serving as a GI in Germany, where her stepfather was stationed. The rockstar, 10 years her senior, quickly became enamored with Priscilla and they began what would become a seven-year-long courtship. Their public relationship caused Priscilla to quickly become accustomed to Elvis' fame, and her family had reservations about allowing her to move to Graceland, the rockstar's estate in Memphis, Tennessee. Although their relationship was marred by rumors of Elvis' affairs in Hollywood, the couple finally wed in 1967, when Priscilla was 22. Just a year later, they welcomed their only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. By 1972, however, their relationship was too rocky for repair, and the couple divorced that year.

Afterward, Priscilla opened a boutique in Los Angeles called Bis and Beau, after her business partner, Olivia Bis, and her own maiden name, Beaulieu. It gained a famous following, in part from Elvis' support, as well as Cher, Tina Turner, and Barbra Streisand. Priscilla's experience as a business owner would then help her manage Elvis' estate after his untimely death in 1977.

Today, she remains a part of Elvis' pop culture legacy and still makes visits to Graceland. Additionally, in June, a biopic about Elvis, Elvis (2022), directed by Baz Luhrmann, will hit the theaters, and Priscilla has been an integral role in the project's rollout. At the 2022 Met Gala, she walked the red carpet with the film's stars Austin Butler and Olivia DeJonge.

On Priscilla's 77th birthday, take a look at her young days spent with Elvis.

    Early life[edit]

Priscilla Ann Wagner was born at Brooklyn Naval Hospital in Brooklyn on May 24, 1945.[1][2] Her maternal grandfather, Albert Henry Iversen, was born in Egersund, Norway.[3] He immigrated to the United States, where he married Lorraine, who was of Scots-Irish and English descent. Their only daughter was Anna Lillian Iversen. Later she was called (or her name was changed to) Ann.[4] She gave birth to Priscilla when she was 19 years old.

Priscilla's biological father was US Navy pilot James Wagner, son of Kathryn and Harold Wagner.[4] Wagner married Priscilla's mother, Ann, on August 10, 1944; he was 23; they had been dating for more than three years. Wagner died in a plane crash returning home on leave when Priscilla was six months old.[5]

In 1948, Ann Wagner met a United States Air Force officer named Paul Beaulieu, from Quebec, Canada. The couple were married within a year. The couple raised Priscilla along with: Donald Beaulieu (b. 1949), Michelle Beaulieu (b. 1954), Jeffrey Beaulieu (b. 1960) and twins Thomas Beaulieu and Timothy Beaulieu (b. 1962). Ann and Priscilla took the Beaulieu surname,[6] and over the next few years, the growing family repeatedly relocated as Beaulieu's Air Force career moved them from Connecticut to New Mexico to Maine. Priscilla describes herself during this period as "a shy, pretty, little girl, unhappily accustomed to moving from base to base every two or three years."[7] Priscilla later recalled how uneasy she felt having to move so often, never knowing if she could ever make friends for life, or if she would fit in with the people she would meet at the next place.[7]

In 1956, the Beaulieus settled in Del Valle, Texas, but soon her stepfather was transferred to Wiesbaden, West Germany.[8] Priscilla was "crushed" by this news, as just after junior high, her fear of having to leave friends behind and make new ones was once again justified.[8]

    Life in Germany[edit]

When the Beaulieus arrived in Germany, they stayed at the Helene Hotel, but, after three months, living there became too expensive, and they looked for a place to rent.[9] The family settled into a large apartment in a "vintage building constructed long before World War I." Soon after moving in, the Beaulieus realized it was a brothel, but, given the scarcity of housing, they had little choice but to remain.[9]

    Life with Elvis[edit]

On September 13, 1959, during Elvis Presley's Army career, he met Priscilla at a party at his rented home in Bad Nauheim, Germany.[10] Though only 14 years old, she made a huge impression on him. Elvis allegedly regressed to acting like an "awkward, embarrassed" boy-next-door figure in front of her. By the end of the evening, however, he managed to compose himself.[11]

Priscilla's parents were upset by her late return home the night of that first meeting and insisted that she never see Elvis again, but his eagerness for another rendezvous and his promise never to bring her home late again[12] led them to relent. Thereafter, he and Priscilla were frequently together until his departure from West Germany, in March 1960. After Elvis left, Priscilla was inundated with requests for interviews from media outlets around the world. She received fan mail from Elvis fans, some positive and some negative, as well as mail from "lonesome G.I.s". With gossip-magazine rumors swirling about his relationship with Nancy Sinatra, Priscilla became convinced that her romance with Elvis was over and she would never see him again.[13]

Elvis first met Priscilla in 1959 when he was a serving in the U.S. Army in West Germany. Priscilla was living there with her family at the time. Elvis was 24 years old while Priscilla was 14. The couple met at a party and hit it off right away.

However, because of his age and rock star status, Priscilla’s parents were hesitant about letting their daughter get involved with Elvis. Yet, he managed to charm them. In an interview with Closer Weekly in 2017, Priscilla shared that her parents grew to like Elvis after meeting him.

When Elvis met Priscilla, he was already in a relationship. Elvis had a girlfriend named Anita Wood, who was also working in Hollywood at the time. The two of them began dating in 1957 and, when Elvis came back to the U.S., he and Wood continued their relationship.

According to Express, Wood grew suspicious of Elvis because she heard rumors about his fling. She did not confront him about it until she saw a letter Priscilla wrote to him, asking to come visit him in the U.S. When Wood told Elvis about what she had found, he got “so mad,” but he later tried to downplay the affair, telling Wood that Priscilla was “just a child.”

“I know when I walked in the door the phone was ringing and it was him. I didn’t want to talk to him. But he kept calling,” Wood said. “I remember when he got me on the phone, (he said) ‘Little, please don’t tell anybody about this. This girl, again, she’s just a child. She’s just a fourteen-year-old child it means absolutely nothing. She just wants to visit, it means nothing. And if you told anybody, I’d get in a lot of trouble, she’s so young’.”

Wood continued, “He just begged me, ‘Little, Little, Little’. So I said, ‘I won’t tell anybody’, and I never did, I never did tell anybody.”
