Stranger Things season four has officially landed on Netflix, and naturally we're already looking ahead to more instalments of the blockbuster sci-fi drama. Series four volume one dropped last Friday (27th May), while volume two is coming to Netflix on 1st July.

And if that's still not enough (of course it isn't), there's already plenty of talk about Stranger Things season five. The show's creators have confirmed that a fifth series of ST *is* happening, but that it will sadly be the show's last. Here's everything we know about season five so far...

What will happen in Stranger Things season 5?

With season four volume two still yet to be released, we'll have to wait a little while before we get a full picture of what might happen in season five. Still, The Duffer Brothers have revealed one key detail about the next season: that it will likely feature a time jump from season four.

"We learn a lot every time we make a [season]," Matt Duffer told TVLine. "We've learned a lot just working with all of our new actors and the ones that we've worked with for a long time over this year [making season 4], so I'm sure it'll change a little bit from that outline."

He continued, "I'm sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we'd have shot [seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that. So these are all discussions we're going to have with our writers when we start the room up. Believe it or not, we're still working on season 4. We’re trying to finish the final two episodes, they’re so massive."

Previously, the brothers also teased "more exciting stories" to come from the Stranger Things universe, while also nodding towards what we can expect to happen in the fifth series.

In their S5 announcement statement, the creators wrote: "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down."

Elsewhere, the creators teased details on the season five finale, telling SFX, "We know what the ending is."

Matt Duffer went on, "It's conceivable that it changes but I think it's unlikely because it's one of those endings that just feels, and has always felt, right. And it also feels sort of inevitable. Then when you come up with it, you're like, 'oh yeah well, that is absolutely what is has to be.'"

When was Stranger Things season 5 confirmed?

The Stranger Things creators confirmed that season five is indeed going ahead, in an open letter to fans published via Netflix in February. However, they also announced that series five would unfortunately mark the end of Stranger Things.

Ahead of season four's release, they wrote: "Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but – as you’ll soon see for yourselves – we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last."

Hey, all good things must come to an end and all that, right?

Netflix also appeared to hint towards the show's final season with an upside down (geddit?) sign reading, "Every ending has a beginning." Cryptic.

Who might star in Stranger Things season 5?

We'd expect all of our favourite Stranger Things cast members to be back on our screens for season five - providing that they're still alive at the end of season four, that is.

If everyone's alive and well, that'll include Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Noah Schnapp (Will), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Sadie Sink (Max), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Joe Keery (Steve), Priah Ferguson (Erica) and Winona Ryder (Joyce).

Fans are also hoping some of the new season four characters will return, like Eduardo Franco as Argyle (but maybe not Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna.)

Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 has already pushed the limits of how long a series can be by featuring numerous episodes over 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Volume 2, however, which is set to land in July, will go beyond.

The eighth episode will have a runtime of 1 hour and 20 minutes, while the finale will be a whopping two-and-a-half hours long – basically the ideal length for a blockbuster movie.

So far, Stranger Things' fourth season has brought with it many twists and turns, as well as the show's most sinister villain yet, titled Vecna, and we don't yet know how the rest of the instalment will play out.

A trailer was previously released which teased some more details about season 4 – revealing that it will pick up 185 days after the previous season and showing Eleven adapt to her new home in California, while also including shady government types and a big explosion...

Earlier trailers had included footage of Eleven being restrained by an unknown character and some spooky scenes of the rest of the gang entering the Creel house, which used to be owned by a character played by Freddy Krueger legend, Robert Englund – so it looks like there's an awful lot to look forward to.

What's more, volume 1 never managed to give Eddie Munson the epic guitar shown in season 4’s first trailers, but it looks like that could all be about to change.

Talking about what fans can expect in the upcoming episodes, Eddie Munson actor Joseph Quinn recently told The Guardian: "I can say there's a guitar scene and that the scale and ambition are astonishing."

He continued: "All the seeds that have been planted bear fruit and it's just carnage. You know the finale is two-and-a-half hours, right? Ending with this monster, feature-length episode is so bold."

Series creators and showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer previously told EW that the conclusion would be much darker than in previous runs.

"We're dealing with darker themes, and issues that come along with being a teenager, because for at least Ross and I, and I think for most people, high school is a challenging time," Matt teased. "And you're experiencing a lot of dark emotions for the first time. Whereas for us, middle school was such a magical time."

Matt continued: "And that was why that was reflected in season 1, whereas this has gotten darker... We wanted the whole season to feel like everybody is in jeopardy. And we felt like that was something you couldn't really do as well when they were these cute little kids. But now, you know, everybody's life is on the line."

However, season 4’s arrival is bound to be bittersweet for fans, with the Duffer brothers having confirmed that season 5 will be "the last" and that it will conclude the show for good, though fans can look forward to a very "different" spin-off in the future.

Read on for everything we know so far about Stranger Things season 4 on Netflix.

Stranger Things season 4 release date

Stranger Things season 4 part 1 landed on 27th May 2022.

However, fans will have to wait until 1st July 2022 for season 4 part 2 – not too long now.

And with some pretty staggering episode runtimes, it's going to be bigger than ever.

In March last year, David Harbour (Hopper) revealed during an Instagram Q&A that season 4 was originally “supposed to come out" in early 2021, but that the release date would be “pushed back” in wake of COVID-19.

If things hadn’t had to be paused, it looks like filming would have finished up in August 2020. The script was finished a while ago, and production started in March 2020.

Actor Noah Schnapp (Will Byers) told Fanmio that filming was set to wrap in summer 2021 and this was backed up by David Harbour's comments on a June episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he revealed that shooting is "almost done".

"I've got one more little stint, we should be done in like August," he said, although an effects-heavy show such as Stranger Things will require several months of post-production.

Star Finn Wolfhard had previously suggested we wouldn't see season 4 until 2022, telling a Fanmio user that Stranger Things 4 "should be out some time next year hopefully”.

Stranger Things season 4 has not only been the show's biggest and scariest outing yet – it’s also been its most popular, racking up some incredible viewing stats over its opening week of release.

New villain Vecna has been a chilling success, Kate Bush has retaken the charts by storm thanks to the use of her hit Running Up That Hill in ‘that scene’ in episode 4, and the final twists in episode 7 set up the perfect cliffhanger as we wait for Season 4 Volume 2 to arrive in July.

But even with two episodes still to be released before season 4 is complete, talk has already begun about the plans for season 5 and how Stranger Things might come to an end.

The series' writers and producers the Duffer brothers have always had an ending and full series plan for Stranger Things, but it has been a closely guarded secret.

Here is everything we know so far about Stranger Things season 5…

What is the Stranger Things season 5 release date?

    Netflix

Season 5 hasn't even started filming, so let's not get too excited just yet about the show's finale.

If we were having a guess, late 2023 feels quite ambitious, but there's a small chance of making that if filming starts soon. It's more likely that we will see the show return in 2024 for its final run.

Is Stranger Things season 5 the final season?

The Duffer brothers confirmed in a letter to fans that the show would bow out with a fifth and final season.

"Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things," they wrote.

"At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but - as you'll see for yourselves - we are now hurtling toward our finale."

Will there be any Stranger Things spinoff series?

    Netflix

Nothing has been confirmed about further additions to the Stranger Things universe, but it would be surprising if Netflix didn't try expanding the franchise which remains the most recognised and successful show on the service.

How many spinoffs or series come after Stranger Things will be largely dependent on the show's creators, Ross and Matt Duffer. But it doesn't sound like the brothers are quite finished with the Stranger Things universe quite yet.

In their letter to fans about the show’s ending, they wrote: "There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes."

They also confirmed to Variety: "We do have an idea for a spinoff that we’re super excited about… but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it.”

"We think everyone - including Netflix - will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it's very, very different."

Could we get an Eleven solo series? A Robin and Nancy Detective Agency? A Steve and Dustin sitcom? We’ll have to wait and see.

What do we know about Stranger Things Season 5?

    Netflix

Other than it being the end, we know very little at this stage.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jamie Campbell Bower has hinted that he will return for season 5 as villain Vecna/001.

And the Duffer brothers have said that season 5 will be set up by the conclusion to season 4 and won’t require any reintroduction to the characters.

“5 is just going to be pedal to the metal from the opening scene,” Ross Duffer told The Wrap.

Ross also revealed that their plans for season 5 left Netflix executives a blubbering mess.

“We do have an outline for Season 5 and we pitched it to Netflix and they really responded well to it,” said the writer.

“I mean, it was hard. It’s the end of the story. I saw executives crying who I’ve never seen cry before and it was wild.”

Many popular TV shows suffer from adding series after series without a plan for how it might finish one day. But director Shawn Levy reassured fans that there has been a plan all along for Stranger Things.

“I can say this. No, one's making it up as we go along and there is an endgame, if you will,” Levy told Collider.

And finally, the Duffer brothers have also said in interviews that we can expect another time jump at the start of season 5. The duo said that it makes sense to keep moving forward through the 1980s to keep pace with the aging cast.

Perhaps season 5 will start in 1988 or even 1989 and take us right through to the end of the decade.

Who is in the Stranger Things season 5 cast?

Until we find out who survives Season 4 Volume 2 – Nancy! Steve! – we can't be sure who will return for the final season.
