is an American television miniseries created for the streaming service Disney+. It is part of the franchise, beginning ten years after the events of (2005), and stars Ewan McGregor as the title character, reprising his role from the prequel trilogy.

The project originated as a spin-off film to be written by Hossein Amini and directed by Stephen Daldry, but it was reworked as a limited series by Amini following the commercial failure of (2018) and the franchise's subsequent pivot to television. McGregor was confirmed to be starring in August 2019, and Deborah Chow was hired to direct a month later. Production was scheduled to begin in July 2020, but the series was put on indefinite hold in January 2020 because Lucasfilm was unhappy with the series' scripts. Joby Harold was hired to rewrite the series and serve as showrunner in April 2020, executive producing with Chow, McGregor, Kathleen Kennedy, and Michelle Rejwan. Additional castings were announced in March 2021, with co-stars such as Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Jimmy Smits, James Earl Jones, and Hayden Christensen also reprising their prequel trilogy roles. Filming began by May 2021 in Los Angeles, using StageCraft video wall technology, and wrapped by September. film composer John Williams wrote the series' main theme.

Ten years after the events of (2005)—in which the Jedi were destroyed by Order 66 and his former apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, fell to the dark side and became the Sith Lord Darth Vader–Obi-Wan Kenobi is on Tatooine watching over Anakin's son Luke. Hiding on Tatooine, Kenobi lives a solitary life in exile.[1][2] Vader has set up the Sith Inquisitors program, a group of dark side Force users, to hunt down any Jedi who survived Order 66. Kenobi is forced out of hiding when he is called on a mission to rescue Anakin's daughter, Leia, after she is kidnapped by the Inquisitors, in a plot to draw Kenobi out. He then embarks on a "rollicking" adventure, eventually leading to confrontation between him and Vader.[1][2][3]

A Jedi Master who survived Order 66 and now lives in exile under the name "Ben" on the planet Tatooine, watching over young Luke Skywalker.[2][4] McGregor was excited to play a version of the character closer to Alec Guinness's portrayal from the original trilogy than his own younger version from the prequel trilogy,[5] with Kenobi beginning the series "broken, and faithless, and beaten, [having] somewhat given up".[6] Executive producer Michelle Rejwan described Kenobi as being in a "pretty traumatic moment" following his losses in (2005), including his apprentice Anakin's fall to the dark side of the Force. Kenobi left Anakin for dead on Mustafar at the end of the film and feels guilty for doing so,[7] with director Deborah Chow being intrigued by the idea that Kenobi might still care deeply for Anakin.[8] Head writer Joby Harold said the series would relate the "very emotional" version of Kenobi in the prequels to Alec Guinness's "zen master" in (1977).[9] McGregor was part of the conversations about Kenobi's characterization in the series,[7] and rewatched the Skywalker Saga films to prepare. He also read science fiction novels, including those written by Iain Banks, for the role.[10]

Rupert Friend as the Grand Inquisitor:

A member of the Pau'an species from Utapau who is the highest-ranking Inquisitor of the Galactic Empire.[6] He was once a member of the Jedi Order, serving as a Jedi Temple Guard. Friend said the character enjoyed the sound of his own voice and naively believed himself to be on a par with Darth Vader, wishing to replace him as Emperor Palpatine's apprentice. Friend was excited to bring the Grand Inquisitor to live action and wanted to remain faithful to his characterization in the animated series , though he, Chow, and co-creator Dave Filoni did not want Friend to do an impression of original actor Jason Isaacs.[11]

Obi-Wan Kenobi – starring Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen – has landed on Disney Plus.

We’ll pick up with Ewan as Obi-Wan and Hayden as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader 10 years after the action witnessed in 2005’s prequel Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The new series joins two other Star Wars shows, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, on the streaming platform – but it’s been in the works since 2015, originally as a feature film.

Fans will surely be chomping at the bit to watch the whole thing from start to finish, but how long will the series be?

And will it all be released at once?

There will be six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s first series, it’s been confirmed.

Both episodes one and two will be released from today – Friday, May 27 – and the third episode will follow on Wednesday, June 1.

The remaining three episodes will be released on consecutive Wednesdays, so mark your calendars for June 8 and June 15.

Last but not least, the sixth and final episode comes out on Wednesday, June 22.

Each episode will likely be ready to watch at 8am UK time on its release day, as this is the standard launch time for new material arriving on Disney Plus.

However, the first two episodes dropped at the earlier time of 5am, so it will remain to be seen if this will be the pattern for the whole series

The Disney era of Star Wars has given fans of the galaxy far, far, away new stories of just about every era. While the sequel trilogy—The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker—largely focused on a new cast of characters, a handful of original trilogy characters (Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, R2D2, C3PO, and, somehow, Palpatine) figured into the fun. The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett expanded to include characters from the animated shows like The Clone Wars and Rebels, while featuring an actor who first appeared in prequel movie, albeit as a different character. But with Obi-Wan Kenobi, it's truly, finally, and completely a time for fans of the prequels.

That's right: it's prequel time, baby!And while we've heard people complaining for decades about the merit and quality of the prequels (seriously, we've heard quite enough at this point), there's one thing that no one has ever complained about: Ewan McGregor's portrayal across all three films as the legendary Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi.

McGregor's performance, without question, stands up to Alec Guinness' portrayal in the original Star Wars, and in many ways surpasses it; remember that Guinness only appeared in about two thirds of one movie, while McGregor anchored an entire trilogy. And man did he go out on top—Revenge of the Sith remains an absolute banger to this day.

With Obi-Wan Kenobi, we're looking to keep some of that same energy. Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker, will also feature as a part of Obi-Wan Kenobi, returning to the role he played 17 years ago: Darth Vader. Yup, Darth and Obi, together again. We're ready to see some sparks (and lightsabers) fly.
