Is There a Season 5 of 'Ozark'? Is Season 4 the Last Season?

Wondering if there will be a Season 5 of 'Ozark'? Curious if 'Ozark' Season 4 is the end of the series? Here's what we know.

    MORE OPTIONS Powered by Reelgood

Sometimes when a show ends, you know that’s the final episode. Either everyone dies or they accomplish their goals. That’s not the path Ozark takes in Season 4.

As we’ve covered before, Ozark’s latest season ends on a cliffhanger that is sure to leave some fans searching for more episodes. Sadly, your search is over. Ozark Season 4 is the final installment of Jason Bateman and Laura Linney’s stellar crime drama. Wondering why this series ended when it did and what its future may hold? Here’s what we know.

Will There Be an Ozark Season 5?

No, there will not be an Ozark Season 5. Better savor those final seven episodes. They’re probably going to be the last you’ll ever see of the Byrde family.

Is Ozark Season 4 the Final Season?

It certainly is. In June of 2020, it was announced that Ozark had been renewed for a fourth and final season. That season was bigger than past seasons of the show — 14 episodes instead of Ozark’s typical 10. It was also released in two batches. Part 1 premiered in January of this year, and Part 2 premiered in April.

“We’re so happy Netflix recognized the importance of giving Ozark more time to end the Byrdes’ saga right. It’s been such a great adventure for all of us — both on screen and off — so we’re thrilled to get the chance to bring it home in the most fulfilling way possible,” showrunner Chris Mundy said at the time of the announcement.

“Ozark is a gripping drama that has captivated audiences all around the world and garnered tremendous critical acclaim,” Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of Original Content, added. “We’re so grateful to Chris [Mundy], Jason [Bateman], Laura [Linney], Julia [Garner], and the entire cast and crew for all their tireless dedication to the show and can’t wait to see how the Byrdes’ journey comes to a close.”

'Ozark' Series Finale Recap: The Way of the World

We don’t have a definitive answer for this. But based on interviews that Bateman has given, it seems that giving Ozark a definite ending was a creative decision.

“I think there’s always been the presumed area [of] three seasons, four seasons, five seasons, something like that,” Bateman told Collider in 2020. “Based on the sort of the pitch line of what these characters are doing and the rate of escalation in danger and plot, there’s a certain pitch to that. And, if you keep going on that pitch for a whole lot longer, you’re going to go over the cliff, or up over the peak of the mountain and you end up jumping the shark. So, given the intelligence of Marty Byrde and Wendy Byrde [Linney], if they keep going at this pitch for much longer, they’re either going to be killed or put in jail. The alternative is to flatten out that pitch so that you don’t end up jumping the shark, but then you start stalling just for additional episodes and seasons.”

Are There Going to Be Any Ozark Spinoffs?

At the moment, there are no plans for any Ozark spinoffs. But by now you know how Netflix operates. Ozark is too big of a hit for the streaming giant to leave alone. Also, the streaming giant has now created multiple projects starring Jason Bateman and Julia Garner (Arrested Development and Inventing Anna, anyone?). Based on how Netflix has treated past hits like Narcos, Money Heist, and The Witcher, it seems highly likely that there will be some sort of spinoff in our streaming futures. At the very least, we will likely see more projects from Chris Mundy, Bill Dubuque, and Mark Williams.
