Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had a lot of story to pack into its 126-minute runtime, a runtime that is definitely on the shorter side when looking at recent MCU films. But that runtime was originally much longer, according to director Sam Raimi.

Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange 2 follows Benedict Cumberbatch's sorcerer hero through the alternate realities of the multiverse as he tries to protect teenager America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from those looking to steal her dimension-hopping powers. The sequel's runtime makes it the shortest MCU flick since 2019's Captain Marvel, which clocked in at 124 minutes.

RELATED: Doctor Strange 2 Works Better As A Collection Of Moments Rather Than A Cohesive Story

If the story is told right, a runtime shouldn't determine how great a film is, but since the Doctor Strange sequel underwent many significant reshoots, it's difficult not to dwell on what the original cut looked like, especially when the flick became one of most hyped films to date in the MCU. So when speaking with Collider, Raimi was of course asked about that original cut and how much footage was taken out. "It was probably like two hours and 40 minutes, and it slowly came down, even though we did the reshoots," the Evil Dead and Spider-Man filmmaker recalled. "We took out material even though the reshoots went in. So, it slowly got down to about two hours and five minutes is the total."

While many fans could have easily experienced another 30 minutes or so of Raimi's unique vision, Doctor Strange 2 no doubt packed plenty of surprises. These surprises included cameos that will surely be discussed for a while, especially considering how those particular characters met a certain fate. That being said, it will be interesting to see if Raimi continues his work in the MCU, and how far off we will see him directing another project.

The sequel received generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising Raimi's injection of horror elements and the performances. Other than Cumberbatch's and Gomez's exciting portrayals, the film also stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer. Loki head writer Michael Waldron, who was praised for his work on the Marvel Studios series, was hired to rewrite the script along with newcomer Jade Bartlett. Raimi also replaced director Scott Derrickson, who helmed the first film.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theatres.

With only one month to go before it arrives in theaters, the runtime for Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has finally surfaced online. A listing on Fandango reveals that the Benedict Cumberbatch-led superhero film will be two hours and six minutes. Announced on Saturday, tickets for the highly-anticipated Multiverse extravaganza will be on sale on April 6, at 9 a.m. EST.

Although the blockbuster sequel will be a major turning point in the MCU compared to its predecessor, 2016's Doctor Strange is only ten minutes shorter. Moreover, the two-hour and six-minute runtime make it the shortest Marvel Studios film since Captain Marvel. The first MCU film to dip its toes into the multiverse was last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which clocked in at two and a half hours.

Marvel Studios' first theatrical release this year, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch, while Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Chiwetel Ejiofor reprise their roles from 2016 film. Multiverse of Madness will introduce audiences to Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, a young superhero with the power to open portals to different realities, an ability that will surely come into play in the self-proclaimed multiverse film.

'Doctor Strange 2': Trailer, Release Date, Cast, Filming Details & Everything We Know So Far

The plot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been kept under lock and key, aside from what can be seen in its trailers. But the official synopsis does confirm the film will be traveling to alternate realities:

In Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Behind the scenes, horror maestro Sam Raimi directs a screenplay by Loki scribe Michael Waldron. Raimi takes over directorial duties after Scott Derrickson departed the project a few years after helming the first film. Of course, the president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige serves as a producer.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in U.S. cinemas on May 6.

Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to (2016) and the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Sam Raimi, written by Michael Waldron, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. In the film, Strange protects America Chavez (Gomez), a teenager capable of travelling the multiverse, from Wanda Maximoff (Olsen).

director and co-writer Scott Derrickson had plans for a sequel by October 2016. He signed to return as director in December 2018, when Cumberbatch was confirmed to return. The film's title was announced in July 2019 along with Olsen's involvement, while Jade Halley Bartlett was hired to write the film that October. Derrickson stepped down as director in January 2020, citing creative differences, with Waldron and Raimi joining the next month and starting over. They added elements of the horror genre that Raimi had worked with previously, and made Maximoff the villain of the film, continuing her story from the series (2021). Filming began in November 2020 in London but was put on hold in January 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production resumed by March 2021 and concluded in mid-April in Somerset. Shooting also occurred in Surrey and Los Angeles.

premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on May 2, 2022, and was released in the United States on May 6, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The film has grossed $552 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2022. The film received positive reviews with critics praising Raimi's direction, the visuals, and the performances of the cast (particularly Cumberbatch, Olsen, and Gomez), but the pacing and writing received some criticism.
