    The third round of Economic Impact Payments was authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 as an advance payment of the tax year 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

    The IRS started sending the third Economic Impact Payments to eligible individuals in March 2021 and continued sending payments throughout the year as tax returns were processed.

    The IRS has issued all third Economic Impact Payments and related plus-up payments. Most eligible people already received their Economic Impact Payments.

    You may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return if you didn't qualify for a third Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount.

    Amount and Status of Your Third Payment

    You can no longer use the Get My Payment application to check your payment status.

    To find the amount of the third payment, create or view your online account or refer to IRS Notice 1444-C, which we mailed after sending your payment. We’re also sending Letter 6475 through March 2022 confirming the total amount of the third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments you were issued for tax year 2021.

    You can also securely access your individual tax information with an IRS online account to view your total Economic Impact Payment amounts under the 2021 tax year tab. You will need the total of the third payment and any plus-up payments you received to accurately calculate the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2021 federal tax return in 2022.

    Plus-Up Payments

    We sent additional or plus-up payments to people who:

    Already received a third Economic Impact Payment based on a 2019 tax return or information received from SSA, RRB or VA, and

    Were eligible for a plus-up payment based on their 2020 tax return

    Do not call the IRS as our phone assistors don't have information beyond what is available on IRS.gov.

    Eligibility

    Most eligible people didn't need to take additional action to get a third payment.

    Generally, someone was eligible for the full amount of the third Economic Impact Payment if they:

    are a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien (and their spouse if filing a joint return), and

    are not a dependent of another taxpayer, and

    had adjusted gross income (AGI) that is not more than:

    $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower

    $112,500 if filing as head of household or

    $75,000 for any other filing status

    Payments were phased out – or reduced – above those AGI amounts. This means people did not receive a payment if their AGI was at least:

    $160,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower

    $120,000 if filing as head of household

    $80,000 for any other filing status

    Amount of Third Economic Impact Payment

    The third Economic Impact Payment amount was:

    $1,400 for an eligible individual with a valid Social Security number ($2,800 for married couples filing a joint return if both spouses have a valid Social Security number or if one spouse has a valid Social Security number and one spouse was an active member of the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the taxable year)

    $1,400 for each qualifying dependent with a valid Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number issued by the IRS

    Getting Your Payment

    Most eligible individuals received their third Economic Impact Payment automatically and didn't need to take additional action. The IRS used available information to determine your eligibility and issue the third payment to people who:

    filed a 2020 tax return

    filed a 2019 tax return if the 2020 tax return had not been submitted or processed yet

    did not file a 2020 or 2019 tax return but registered for the first Economic Impact Payment with the Non-Filers tool in 2020

    registered through the 2021 Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool

    are federal benefit recipients who do not usually file a tax return.

    Third Payments Differed from Previous Economic Impact Payments

    The third payments differed from the earlier payments in several respects:

    Income phaseout amounts changed. Payments were reduced for individuals with adjusted gross income of more than $75,000 (or $150,000 if married filing jointly). The reduced payments ended at $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for married filing jointly. People above these levels did not receive any payment.Payment amounts are different. Most families received $1,400 per person, including all dependents claimed on their tax return. Typically, this means a single person with no dependents received $1,400, while married filers with two dependents received $5,600.Qualifying dependents expanded. Unlike the first two payments, the third payment was not restricted to children under 17. Eligible individuals received a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.

    All third-round stimulus checks have been sent out, the IRS announced Wednesday. If you haven’t received all of the money you are eligible for, you will need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return.

    The third stimulus checks were technically advance payments of that credit. The agency began disbursing them in March of last year, after President Joe Biden signed off on the American Rescue Plan. The last of the payments were sent in December.

    But there are a few categories of people who will need to claim the credit to get their stimulus money, for a variety of reasons. The main group is parents of children born in 2021, or families who added another eligible dependent, such as a parents or grandchild, to their 2021 return. Assuming the parents or guardians were eligible for stimulus money, their dependent is, as well.

    Most other eligible taxpayers have already received the full amount they are entitled to and won’t need to claim the credit, according to the IRS. That said, some people who qualified for the payments may not have received them at all, or may have received less than they are eligible for.

    That could have been a miscalculation on the part of the IRS, or your income could have fallen between 2020 and 2021, making you eligible for more. If that’s the case, they can claim the remainder of the payment on their tax return.

    The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit is based on the income and number of dependents on a taxpayer’s 2021 return, which can be filed now. Filers will need to know the total amount of their third-round stimulus payments, including any Plus-Up Payments. This total can be viewed on their IRS account, or in a physical letter from the IRS. The IRS notes that some third-round stimulus checks may still be in the mail.

    If you’re using tax preparation software, it should ask you questions to determine how much you can claim, if anything. Otherwise, you can use this Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet.

    In addition to the third stimulus payment, parents of children born in 2021 can likely claim the enhanced child tax credit on their return. That can be worth up to $3,600 per child born last year.

    Many Americans are relying on stimulus money to cover debt and daily expenses.

    To date, the IRS has made 169 million payments for the third round of stimulus checks for $1,400. The agency continues to send weekly batches of payments, so there is still time if you are waiting for your money. However, there could actually be an issue with your payment and the IRS doesn't want you to call them with problems related to a missing check.

    Reasons for a delay could include a lag in mail delivery (track your check through the US Postal Service), if the IRS has incorrect direct deposit information for you or if the agency suspects identity theft. There might be other problems if you're a recipient of SSI, SSDI or veterans benefits. Or maybe you received a letter from the IRS saying that your $1,400 payment was sent, but the check never arrived. Then what?

    We'll explain below how to request a payment trace or get a recovery rebate credit on your 2020 tax return if you filed a tax extension. We can also share unemployment news, as more states cancel jobless benefits and some offer back-to-work bonuses. Plus, here's how parents can get money from the child tax credit and calculate their total. This story was recently updated.

    Use the IRS Get My Payment tool to track stimulus money

    For the third stimulus check: It's worth visiting the IRS' online portal designed to track the status of your 2021 payment. Generally, it should tell you when your check will be processed and how you'll receive it: for example, as a paper check in the mail. If the Get My Payment tool doesn't give you information you can understand or says your check is on the way and you haven't received it, you may need to eventually request a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit.For the first or second payment: If you can't find the letter sent by the IRS, you'll need to create an online profile with the IRS to see your status. For any problems, you may need to issue a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit, even if you don't normally submit a tax return. (May 17 was the last day to file your taxes without an extension.) Here's more information about finding the amount of your first and second payments.

    What to do if the IRS 'needs more information'

    If the Get My Payment tool gave you a payment date but you still haven't received your money, the IRS may need more information. Check the Get My Payment tool again and if it reports "Need More Information," this could indicate that your check has been returned because the post office was unable to deliver it, an IRS representative told CNET. Here are more details on how the tracker tool works and what the messages mean.

    Why payment status is 'not available'

    It's normal for the Get My Payment tool to give you a message that says "Payment Status Not Available" until the payment is scheduled to be issued, according to the IRS. This message doesn't mean you're not eligible or that you won't receive a payment -- you'll likely just have to wait.

    What to do if there's a direct deposit issue 

    The IRS tracking tool for the third stimulus check doesn't allow you to add direct deposit information this time unless the IRS can't deliver your payment. So if you have a problem, what do you do? Your check may have bounced back to the IRS if the agency tried to send your payment to a now-closed bank account or to a temporary prepaid debit card a tax preparer set up for you. If your payment was returned to the IRS, the agency will mail your check to the current address it has on file for you. If that check is returned, then the IRS will let you enter your banking information in the Get My Payment tool, the IRS said.

    First, we suggest you call your bank or tax preparer -- it never hurts to cover all your bases to confirm that an attempt was made to deposit money into a closed account or debit card.

    Unfortunately, you'll need to wait and monitor the Get My Payment tracker to keep tabs on your check delivery. We also recommend signing up for a free service to track your check to your mailbox.

    Stimulus checks could be seized to cover past due debt

    If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if you're claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.

    In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return -- but only if you filed a tax extension.
