One of the earliest side quests available in Horizon Forbidden West is “Deep Trouble,” a mission that sends you into mines to free a pair of stuck workers. Our Horizon Forbidden West Deep Trouble side quest walkthrough explains how to swim through waters, blow up the minecart, and save the two workers.

Shortly after picking up the side quest in Chainscrape, you’ll need to head to the Crimson Narrows to talk to the foreman, Korvend. He’ll say that the nearby mine collapsed, and two of his workers are stuck inside the flooded area.

To find them, you’ll need to swim and dive under the water to get through the wreckage. You can press the Square button to dive deeper and hold down the X button to come up for air. You only have so much oxygen, so you’ll need to watch that bar to make sure Aloy doesn’t drown.

After picking up some fuses from the stuck miners, you’ll need to follow the quest marker to dive back into the water and resurface. From here, there are obstacles for Aloy to climb above the water on. Use your Focus to highlight them for an easy climb.

The next room will have three Burrowers roaming around and Aloy will note that you can swim under them to avoid having to fight them and fire arrows at special mushrooms to create stealth zones. We found it easier to climb out of the water behind the enemies and just beat them mercilessly.

Keep following the path marked by the quest marker until you see a ladder to knock down. Kick it down to be able to access the area easily (if you fall) and use your Pullcaster on the nearby blue crosses.

Once you pull the crane over, jump on top of it and climb straight up the tracks to the minecart. Press Triangle next to the card to detonate the explosives.

A short cutscene will play as Aloy successfully drains the cavern, but three more robots will pop out. You can choose to ignore these if you want, but all early XP is good XP.

Use the Pullcaster again on the boxes blocking the exit to open up the path. Talk to the duo again and head out of the mines. Korvend will reward you with two Skill Points, 1,260 XP, and Oseram Artificer Face Paint.

The Horizon Forbidden West Deep Trouble quest is one of the game’s first side quests, and it’s also one of the more vague ones.

You’ll get your first taste of underwater exploration and a good lesson in finding puzzle solutions without the Focus’s guidance.

Deep Trouble: Find the Missing Miners

Head into the mines, dive down under the rocks, and swim into the open chamber. Turn right, and you’ll see a small, light blue patch and an even smaller gap in the rocks. That’s your sign – both here and in future underwater areas – that an underwater passage is there for you to take. This one is much longer, but you can press “Triangle” to boost and swim faster (at the expense of some oxygen).

Once you surface again, the miners are just ahead. Speak to them for the next step.

Deep Trouble: Drain the Mine and Go to the Mine Cart

This part takes you on a detour around the mines so you can ignite an explosion and drain the water from the mines. Facing the miners, turn left, walk off the platform, and dive down. There’s another short tunnel here, and you’ll emerge in the cavern with the minecart.

Ignore the ladder to the right, since you can’t get to it yet. Hop in the water, and swim across to the small ladder in front of you, then jump up to the other ladder, and turn left. Follow the passage into the next room, then drop into the water.

You can be stealthy here to avoid the Burrowers using the stealth plants, though it’s possible to just defeat the nearest one and clamber over the rocks to reach the mine track. Either way, follow the cart track around and back into the other room.

Use the Pullcaster to swing the beam over, leap onto it, and interact with the cart.

Draining the mine attracts more machines. Deal with them, then speak with the minors to complete the quest.

Check out our other Horizon Forbidden West guides for more tips, including machine weaknesses and the best skills for Aloy.

There is trouble down in the mines. The mine has collapsed and two men are still stuck inside. You need to figure out a way to drain the mine and free them. Luckily, there are some explosives left over. Here is how you drain the mine in the Deep Trouble quest in Horizon Forbidden West.

    Screenshot by Gamepur

Follow the mission until you reach the pair of miners who are trapped in the cave. You will get a cutscene where you interact with the miners and learn that there are some explosives left over. Of course, Aloy will want to get her hands on them. Continue to the next area to find yourself in a large, open room with water below you. Swim to the other side and climb up the ladder like in the image above.

    Screenshot by Gamepur

Continue along the path and crouch to get to the next area. In the next room, you will need to either avoid some Burrowers or take them out. Get to the other side of the room and follow the tracks. Jump the gap and head to the right to climb up to another area you will crouch through. After climbing down on the other side, you will be back in the room with the explosives.

    Screenshot by Gamepur

Knock down the ladder in case you fall in the water then use your Pullcaster to pull the beam over to you. Climb onto the beam and climb up the ledges to reach the explosives on the track above. Press the triangle button to interact with the explosives. This will initiate a cutscene where the bombs explode and drain the mines. Be careful of the machines that spawn afterward.
