    Supposing you have a table as the below screenshot shown, and want to highlight cells in column B if the adjacent cell values in column C are greater than 800, please apply the Conditional Formatting function as follows.

    1. Select the column cells you will highlight (here I select range B2:B13), and then click Home > Conditional Formatting > New Rule.

    2. In the New Formatting Rule dialog box, please configure as follows.

    2.1 Click Use a formula to determine which cells to format option in the Select a Rule Type section;

    2.2 Copy the below formula into the Format values where this formula is true box;

    =$C2>800

    2.3 Click the Format button to specify a fill color;

    2.4 Click the OK button. See screenshot:

    Note: In the formula, $C2 is the first cell of the column that contains the criteria you need, and >800 is the criteria you will highlight cells based on. Please change them to meet your needs.

    You can see cells in column B are highlighted by certain fill color if the adjacent cells in column C are more than 800.

    To apply conditional formatting based on a value in another column, you can create a rule based on a simple formula. In the example shown, the formula used to apply conditional formatting to the range D5:D14 is:

    =$D5>$C5

    This highlights values in D5:D14 that are greater than C5:C14. Note that both references are mixed in order to lock the column but allow the row to change.

    Explanation

    In this example, a conditional formatting rule highlights cells in the range D5:D14 when the value is greater than corresponding values in C5:C14. The formula used to create the rule is:

    =$D5>$C5

    The rule is applied to the entire range D5:G14. The formula uses the greater than operator (>) to evaluate each cell in D5:D14 against the corresponding cell in C5:C14. When the formula returns TRUE, the rule is triggered and the highlighting is applied.

    Mixed references

    The mixed references used in this formula ($D5, $C5) make this rule portable. You could use the same formula to highlight cells in B5:B14 instead of D5:D14, or even to highlight entire rows based on the same logic.

    To apply Conditional Formatting first you have to select the cells. If you want to highlight the entire row after applying conditional formatting, you need to select all of your datasets. But to highlight cells from a single column you just need to select the cells of that column.

    For our dataset, we want to apply conditional formatting to column C. So, we have selected the cells of column C only.

    2. Opening Conditional Formatting Panel

    In the second step, you need to open the Conditional Formatting panel to choose suitable formatting rules according to your need. First, go to the Home tab and click on Conditional Formatting to expand it. Now, you will see different rules for applying conditional formatting. You need to choose a rule based on your criteria.     4. Formula for Conditional Formatting One Column Based on Another Column

    After selecting Use a formula to determine which cells to format a box named Format values where this formula is true will appear in the below of Select a Rule Type box. Type the following formula in the box,

    =$C6>$B6

    Here, the formula will compare the value of column C with the value of column B in the same row and if the value of column C of a row is greater than the value of column B of the same row, the cell of column C will be formatted.

    After that, you need to fix the formatting style, and to do that click on the Format box.

    5. Determine Formatting Style

    After clicking on the Format box a new window named Format Cells will appear. Here you can choose different formatting styles from different tabs of the window.
