Does Susannah die in 'The Summer I Turned Pretty'?

In the season finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty, we discover that Susannah is ill.

After Conrad and Jeremiah get into a heated exchange during the Cousins debutante ball, Susannah finally reveals to her sons and Belly that her cancer has returned with a vengeance. Now, if you're a fan of the books like us, then you know that this isn't Susannah's first encounter with the illness.

Prior to the show's events, she had breast cancer but went into remission. Since Susannah doesn't die at the end of the first season, it's likely she will be gone by the time Season 2 rolls around.

Speaking of this, Jenny Han exclusively told Distractify that Season 2 will follow the book "pretty closely," so grab those tissues because it's bound to be a tear-jerker.

"I'll say that it will [follow], pretty closely, but there might be some twists and turns that people might not expect. I mean, it's, you know, I think the books are ... the second book takes place over only a few days. And then it has a bunch of flashbacks," the showrunner told us.

Jenny continued, "And so we are sort of approaching the second season with that same kind of energy where you can see, I think, some of what happened in the intervening months. I'll say that without spoiling, I mean, really, just google the book. Read the book, and maybe you'll have a good idea about what's going to happen, but it won't be the exact, but it's inevitable, though."

As for Susannah and Laurel's lifelong friendship, Jenny exclusively told Distractify that although it's atypical, it was extremely crucial for her to showcase their lasting bond in the coming-of-age story.

"I think that they are so essential to the story because they're the ones who have created this, this world, for these kids and their families," Jenny said. "And it was really important to me that it not just be them as the moms but that they had their own identities outside of being a mom, and I almost feel for them being in Cousins is where they kind of almost put a pause on being a mom, a wife, both of them are having their own story and doing their own thing."

"And I think that there's something really special about this friendship and about women's friendship in general, that you really can have a friendship that carries over a whole lifetime," Jenny added. "Where, you know, I think romantic partners can come and go, but some of these friendships are more intimate, more foundational, in one's life and one's character than any romantic partner."

    The Summer I Turned Pretty

Susannah wants nothing more than for her next summer with her family to the best one yet - because it is her last one with them. Her breast cancer has returned and is without a doubt terminal this time. Even near death with cancer and her husband leaving her, she is lively and upbeat with her family and loved ones. She refuses to spend what she knows to be her final days in a hospital bed, but with friends and family. She initially tries to keep her cancer a secret from "the summer kids", not wanting to ruin it for them. What she doesn't know is that everyone - except Belly - is aware of her cancer. She finally admits her cancer has come back with a vengeance in the end of the first novel, but states that she wants to be with her family to the end of things.

    It's Not Summer Without You

Despite her strong spirit, she dies between the first and second novels. Her death serves as a strong and vicious blow to everyone, causing them all to struggle to live without her. It takes them about a year to form a life without her existence and to get their act together in order to move forward in their lives. She remains heavily remembered by her family and friends throughout the rest of the series.

    We'll Always Have Summer

It is discovered she left letters to "the summer kids" to read on their wedding days. The readers, however, only get to read the letter she left for Belly. It is, however, mentioned that in Conrad's letter she wrote how she had seen him truly in love only once; which was with Belly.

    Appearance and Personality

It is mentioned she had long caramel colored hair prior to her cancer that was soft. However, during chemo, she lost her hair and began wearing wigs that "were the best money could buy" but could not compare to her original hair. After chemo, her hair grew back, but she kept it short at her chin. It is mentioned she also had a signature sun hat that she always wore in the summer.

She was very lively and spirited, deeply loving her family more than anything. Despite Belly not being biologically related to her, she considered the young girl to be her "secret daughter" and loved her as such. She had such a deep motherly bond with her, it strongly rivaled the relationship between Belly and her actual mother, Laurel. She also truly loved her husband, Adam, despite how badly he treated her and refused to leave him. He was an alcoholic, frequently cheated on her and emotionally mistreated Jeremiah and Conrad. He even took off during her time with cancer, during which he left her all together. Despite this poor treatment, she still loved him and saw the good he had in him nonetheless.

    Quotes

"When did you go and grow up? When did you turn into this phenomenal woman?" (...) You have always been lovely, but oh honey, look at you. You're so pretty. So pretty. You're going to have an amazing, amazing summer. It'll be a summer you never forget."

"It's a special night. It's the first night of summer."

"Summer doesn't start until our friends get here."

"Mothers get to have secrets too. I don't ask you boys about your secrets, now, do I?"

"Laurel, I'm a big girl now. I need you to stop managing my life. I'm the one who gets to decide how I want to live it."

"Oh, Belly. That's not true. She would care. She does care."

    Trivia

She and Laurel had been best friends since the age of nine and both shared heart shaped scars on the inside of their wrists.

On her deathbed, Susannah had Conrad promise to take care of Jeremiah. She also had Belly promise to take care of Conrad as her final wish to her.

With The Summer I Turned Pretty, Prime Video is delivering the saddest version of your high school fantasy. Based on the novel of the same name by Jenny Han, the romance drama follows a young woman who gets swept up in a love triangle between two boys she’s known her entire life. It’s exactly the sort of story to make most teen girls swoon.

But between the inevitable will-they, won’t-they, there’s a sadder question lurking in the corners of this series. What exactly happens to Susannah, Conrad and Jeremiah’s mom and Laurel’s best friend? Here’s what happens in the series as well as the books.

Does Susannah Die in The Summer I Turned Pretty?

Thankfully, she doesn’t die in the series. But her future doesn’t look too bright. In the middle of Belly’s (Lola Tung) debutant debut, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) took his mother’s phone on a hunch. That’s how he learned that Susannah’s (Rachel Blanchard) cancer had returned and that she had been hiding it from her family.

Jeremiah’s absence forced his brother Conrad (Christopher Briney) to take his place as Belly’s dance partner. But when Jeremiah returned, they got into a fight over a woman. No, not over Belly. Jeremiah punched his brother once he realized that Conrad knew about their mom’s diagnosis this whole time but neglected to tell him. You know how Conrad was moody the entire summer? That’s why.

After the debutante ball, Susannah came clean to her sons about her cancer. That’s when she dropped another bomb: She didn’t want to go through chemotherapy again. Jeremiah and Conrad convinced her to change her mind to everyone’s relief, especially Laurel’s (Jackie Chung). That’s where The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s first season ended. Susannah is still alive, but there’s a very real chance this lovable ray of sunshine may be extinguished.

Does Susannah Die in the Books?

Sadly, she does. In Jenny Han’s original trilogy, Susannah dies between The Summer I Turned Pretty and It’s Not Summer Without You, the second novel that takes place roughly a year after Book 1. It’s too early to know if Prime Video plans to follow Han’s original plan or if this series adaptation will spend more time with Susannah during her final days.

How Does The Summer I Turned Pretty End?

After everyone learns about Susannah’s cancer, Belly and Conrad have a honest conversation on the beach. Conrad apologizes for acting weird all summer, and Belly forgives him, noting how hard it must have been for him to hide knowing about his mom’s diagnosis. Conrad tells Belly that he needs her, but she tells him that isn’t enough. He needs to both need and want her. He assures Belly that he wants her, and the two kiss as Taylor Swift’s “This Love” plays.
