@[email protected]#=img=# Image via Viz Media

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will hit theaters in North America on March 18, 2022, in both Japanese sub and English dubs. Select theaters will have showings in IMAX but we don’t have a list of what theaters will be doing so.

In a statement from Crunchyroll, we learned that the film will have a theatrical release in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France with CRG events, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, French-speaking Africa, and Latin America. Unfortunately, we do not know what the release date will be for the rest of the world. With Jujutsu Kaisen 0 hitting U.S. theaters very soon, we expect more information on the IMAX releases as well as confirmed release dates for the other countries in the coming weeks.

    What Is Jujutsu Kaisen?

Jujutsu Kaisen is a manga by author, Gege Akutami. The series has been a part of Weekly Shonen Jump since March 2018. The series stars Yuji Itadori, a high school student who is the host of a powerful Curse spirit named, Ryomen Sukuna. Itadori joins a secret organization of sorcerers and strives to become a Jujutsu sorcerer, making it his duty to defeat all evil curses.

Itadori is trained by his master, Satoru Gojo, and works alongside Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kugisaki. The series is a battle manga featuring a unique magic system as these young sorcerers battle against demons. The hit manga received an anime adaptation that premiered on October 3, 2020, from the esteemed MAAPA studios.

The manga is actually a sequel to Akutami’s 2017 manga, Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School. After Jujutsu Kaisen’s rise in popularity, the book was renamed Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and is now considered a prequel to the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise. That’s where we start the upcoming movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

When Does Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Take Place?

    @[email protected]#=img=# Image via MAPPA

Based on the manga volume Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the film is set roughly a year before the events of Jujutsu Kaisen. Yuta Okkotsu is a character that is mentioned a few times in the first season of the anime and can even be spotted in the second intro. This film will give him the spotlight and serve as a bit of world-building for the Jujutsu Kaisen mythos.

    The film’s official synopsis states:

“Yuta Okkotsu gains control of an extremely powerful, cursed spirit and gets enrolled in the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School by sorcerers to help him control his power and keep an eye on him.”

The film is manga/anime canon and will feature some of Itadori’s upperclassmen and teachers. It’s a way to give the supporting characters more spotlight, as well as to adapt this fantastic story from the manga.

With Jujutsu Kaisen 0 being anime canon, MAPPA is taking a similar approach we saw not too long ago with Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Using these higher-budget theatrical releases to adapt these canon stories only helps drive interest to the original manga and the anime. Previously, if we were telling a prequel or a spin-off story, it would at best get an original animated video (OVA) that would be available on Blu-ray. Now, studios are taking their time and fleshing out the world in unique ways.

Will Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Be Available on Streaming?

As of now, there is no date for when Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will be coming to streaming. We do know that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train came to FUNimation a few months after its theatrical release, but in contrast, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission has yet to be made available on any streaming platform. In the case of Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with the streaming rights in the coming months.

3 Reasons to Watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Even if You’ve Never Seen the Anime

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Whenever a new anime film comes out that’s connected to an existing property the first question is always: Why should I watch this if I haven’t seen the series? And for Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie, the question is the same. That said, you can watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as both a newcomer and a seasoned fan. But when I say that, I’m not just saying so because there are exposition scenes involved, I’m saying it because watching Jujutsu Kaisen 0 first, actually makes Season 1 of the anime better.

That said, if you’re looking to watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 without binging a show afterward, that option is right there for you too because it tells a compelling and contained story that has a beginning, middle, and end even if you never pick up Season 1 (though I think you should). So, to convince you, here are 3 reasons to watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0, even if you’ve never watched the anime series.

    It’s a Prequel

Getting into anime can be challenging and intimidating. And starting with an animated feature set in the same world can be even more so. While you may show up to the theater expecting a great time, it’s easy to be confused or not feel like you’re “in” on the world despite paying for your ticket. However, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie is the perfect gateway into the anime series, and that’s by design. It’s a prequel! This means not only do you learn about the lead character Yuta Okkotsu, but you learn about the world of the series and three of the series characters: Panda, Maki, and Toge.

As a series, Jujutsu Kaisen does a phenomenal job of getting the audience invested in the side characters, not just the “chosen one.” In fact, Gege Akutami and MAPPA have mostly ensured that everyone who shows up gets depth and background and that’s no different in the feature film. Watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and you don’t just get a gripping story but you get a trio of characters that are both expertly designed and perfectly written. While we get some back story and impact, it sets up the series perfectly, making it a great launching pad into Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1.

    An Emotional Story

In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, you get a world of monsters and curses and fighting. It’s top-tier animated action, but it’s also one of the most moving stories about grief and guilt I’ve seen. Instead of focussing purely on the expected “teen with immense power” trope that defines many shonen, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 instead offers up a story of a teen processing a childhood tragedy.

Yuta Okkotsu experiences guilt, grief, and loneliness when his childhood best friend Rika dies. But instead of leaving this world, Rika becomes a cursed spirit, latched onto Yuta, protecting him for the world and himself often in brutally violent ways. What begins as a search to exorcize Rika ends in an inward reflection on his grief and how it transformed him, even if he was running away from it.

    MAPPA’s Animation

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is hands down the best animation I have seen in a movie, period. From the action sequences and creature design to capturing deep emotional moments, studio MAPPA turns the volume up as high as they can. With such a high bar set with the anime itself, MAPPA has pulled out all the stops to bring to life an action-packed feature film that pushes the boundaries. Unlike Mugen Train before it, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 doesn’t look like more of the same, despite putting characters that we’ve seen fight before at the center of the action. Throw in the grotesque and disturbing design for Rika that is equal parts brutal and creepy and MAPPA continues to knock it all out of the park.

So watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 even if you have no idea what the series is. Watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 if you love emotional stories, great characters, and the best action in animation. You know, just watch Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and buckle in for a great ride.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie is playing in theaters nationwide now.

Less than three months after its debut in Japan, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 has flown over multiple oceans to land in theaters across North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania starting today. Of course, it's as big and awesome as the JUJUTSU KAISEN series — but what exactly is "0," and why is it a huge deal?

Here are five things you need to know before you see JUJUTSU KAISEN 0!

    1. It's A Prequel Film

Before JUJUTSU KAISEN cursed its way into Shonen Jump in 2018, mangaka Gege Akutami published a prototype called JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 in Jump GIGA a year prior, and that's just when its story takes place in relation to the main series. Maki, Inumaki, and Panda are all first-years at Jujutsu High when they meet Yuta Okkotsu, the film's central protagonist that most of you will also be meeting for the first time.

The climax of the film, however, specifically takes place on December 24 (the same as the film's release date in Japan), which means one very important thing — JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 is also a Christmas movie.

    2. Anyone Can See It

Well, that's not quite true if you're under the recommended age rating, but it is a film you can fully enjoy without having seen the anime series. Yuta is just as unfamiliar with curses and how to fight them as Itadori was, which means there's a fresh induction into the world of Jujutsu sorcery and its inhabitants. But don't take it from me, take it from my uninitiated partner that I brought along: "The only thing that confused me was the panda."

There are plenty of cameos and nods for the seasoned fan, too, which also serve to further tee-up new fans to check out the original series. So bring your friend, your parent, your partner, or even your second cousin once removed to share in all the action-horror goodness, because it's a real treat.

    3. It Has A Superstar Main Cast

Being the cool new kids on the block, Yuta and Rika bring two more ultra-talented voices into JUJUTSU KAISEN's already stacked cast list: Megumi Ogata and Kana Hanazawa.

Ogata brought her voice acting A-game in 2021, voicing the protagonists of Japan's top two highest-grossing films of the year — Yuta Okkotsu in JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 and Shinji Ikari in Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. Kana Hanazawa — who you'll know as Angel in Angel Beats!, Mayuri in Steins;Gate, Nadeko in Bakemonogatari, and a hundred other fan-favorite characters — took on a rather different role as a monstrous behemoth, while still bringing out the girlish charm we're used to hearing.

Together, they are the pillars of JUJUTSU KAISEN 0's intense but sentimental story about changing one's self for the better and pure love in a cursed world.

    4. There's An End-Credits Scene

A decade and a half of MCU films tells us not to leave the theater until after the final credits roll, yet there are always early leavers just the same. No need to pull out your phone at the end to look up whether you need to stick around: there is a short end-credits scene after the Japanese credits, and I promise it's worth your while.

    5. There's Plenty Of Satoru Gojo To Go Around

And finally, the big question on everyone's minds: How much Satoru Gojo content is there in JUJUTSU KAISEN 0?

He plays a significant role in the story, but if you're looking for some hard numbers, I've got you covered: Gojo is visibly on-screen for roughly 15 minutes (or exactly 14:50.91 by my shoddy stop-watching), which is a whole 14.3 percent of the film's 105-minute runtime.

So not only is there a constant stream of gorgeous art and animation to drool over, there's enough of Satoru Gojo's wittiness and dazzling eyes to get by until JUJUTSU KAISEN Season 2 rolls around in 2023.
