We always knew the cast of Stranger Things would be a little bit lighter at the end of season 4 part 2, but there was a big question mark hanging over who would be exiting the show ahead of season 5.

Nancy was in quite the pickle when we left her at the end of the last chapter, while Max was right at the top of Vecna's hit list after she and Kate Bush totally embarrassed him by escaping his slimy talons.

But it was newbie Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn, who met his maker during the final battle.

"I think there's a great beginning, there's a great middle and a great end for the character," he told RadioTimes.com.

"And as an actor you want characters with those kinds of arcs. So whilst it would have been great to come back for another season and get together with all those lovely people again, I think it was a brilliantly realised ending for a brilliantly written character."

He added: "It was so thrilling to do on the day. Me and Gaten [Matarazzo, who plays Dustin] were on top of on top of the caravan in the middle of the Upside-Down playing Metallica. And it was great fun.

"And also, I think the timing of it was brilliant. For the whole crew, it felt like the first time that people had been in a live music kind of situation since the pandemic, so it was a joyous celebration on the day.

"It's a fantastic conclusion to the character and yeah, I feel very very lucky."

Quinn said that he'd "obviously" love to return for more Stranger Things action if the opportunity arose (death didn't stop Dacre Montgomery from returning as Billy, or a version of him, at least) – and he has a killer idea for his character.

"Me and Joe Keery (Steve Harrington) were discussing ways in which I could kind of...maybe I'd be like a figment of Gaten's imagination or something," he said. "Like if there could be some kind of room for something like that, something a bit supernatural.

"But my suspicion is that Eddie has done what he needed to do for the [Duffer] brothers."

Still, perhaps his presence could be felt in other ways…

"I think it would be nice for him to kind of have his name cleared," he continued. "I think that would be satisfying for the audience. I think Eddie paid such a...he made the ultimate sacrifice for a town that thought he was a monster, which is a level of heroism that's kind of hard to comprehend.

"But as I said, I'm not allowed in the writers' room, so we'll see what the grown ups think."

Warning! MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Stranger Things season 4 volume 2.Stranger Things season 4 star Joseph Quinn has shared his idea for a potential return in season 5, having even discussed it with co-star Joe Keery. Quinn joined the hit Netflix sci-fi series as the metalhead guitarist and Dungeons & Dragons club leader Eddie Munson in Stranger Things season 4. Volume 2 of season 4 recently released on July 1st, 2022.

This season finds Munson believed to be responsible for a series of gruesome murders, with Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) setting out to help him clear his name. When it's discovered that the true culprit is a threat from the Upside Down, Eddie joins the group in attempting to stop the otherworldly horrors, venturing into the dimension to save the town. In a devastating moment from Stranger Things season 4, Eddie gives his life to distract the colony of Demobats long enough for Nancy, Steve, and Robin to put an end to Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), succumbing to his wounds in front of a distraught Dustin. While Eddie's fate seems sealed, Quinn has revealed that he has some ideas on how the series' latest fan-favorite character could return.

In an interview with RadioTimes, Quinn revealed that Keery and he had discussed potential ideas for how Eddie could return in Stranger Things season 5. The actor stated that he and Keery had imagined Eddie appearing to Dustin as a figment of his imagination, as well as him potentially returning via supernatural means if possible. Despite his ideas, Quinn said that he feels Eddie had fulfilled his purpose for now. Check out Quinn's full comment below.

Following Stranger Things season 4, volume 2's release, it was revealed Quinn improvised lines for Eddie's death scene. The Duffer Brothers later revealed that Quinn also improvised Eddie's line to Steve, "Don't you, big boy?", as he handed the wheel of the hotwired RV over to Harrington. Clearly, Quinn has a terrific grasp of Eddie as a character and his improvisations, in particular his his final words to Dustin, "I love you, man," only helped make his character so memorable and a firm fan-favorite.

As such, audiences were heartbroken to see the character meet an untimely end. Previously, Quinn expressed his interest in returning for season 5, and his recent comments show he is still open to the possibility despite Eddie's death. While Eddie's role is seemingly fulfilled, Stranger Things has had actors reprise roles despite their characters' fates, with both Sean Astin and Dacre Montgomery having small cameos as Bob Newby and Billy Hargrove after their characters' deaths. In which case, a brief appearance by Quinn could easily be within the realm of possibility in season 5.

Is Joseph Quinn leaving Stranger Things? Could Eddie Munson return?

    Stranger Things July 2, 2022

Is Joseph Quinn leaving Stranger Things following the epic ending to season 4? On paper, that may seem obvious — after all, Eddie Munson is dead!

Yet, of course, this is a world where absolutely insane things happen on the regular, and Eddie was someone who proved fairly popular despite only being on the show a short period of time. He almost falls victim to a classic TV trope: When writers feel like they have to kill off someone, they will do whatever they can to avoid taking out a series regular. Think back to The Walking Dead and how many recurring characters / relative newbies die. Only occasionally do they take out the likes of a Glenn or an Abraham.

Speaking about his overall arc on Stranger Things to the Radio Times, here is some of what Quinn had to say:

“I think there’s a great beginning, there’s a great middle and a great end for the character … And as an actor you want characters with those kinds of arcs. So whilst it would have been great to come back for another season and get together with all those lovely people again, I think it was a brilliantly realized ending for a brilliantly written character.”

Quinn also did joke about a way in which his character could theoretically come back:

“Me and Joe Keery (Steve Harrington) were discussing ways in which I could kind of…maybe I’d be like a figment of Gaten’s imagination or something … Like if there could be some kind of room for something like that, something a bit supernatural.

“But my suspicion is that Eddie has done what he needed to do for the [Duffer] Brothers.”

We’ll have to wait a long time to see if there is any more story for Eddie in the cards. Remember that season 5 likely won’t be around for a really long period of time.
