Their story inspired iconic love songs and was recreated in an Oscar-nominated film. Johnny and June Carter Cash became the torch-bearers of deep, passionate love – country-music style. But the lovebirds navigated rough waters leading up to and during their 35-year marriage which produced one son, multiple hit songs about heartache, adoration and redemption, and ended when they took their final mortal bows within four months of each other.
They were both married when they first met
Johnny and June first met backstage at Nashville, Tennessee’s Grand Ole Opry in 1956, though it would be a dozen years before they would become husband and wife. Carter had been aware of Cash through the recommendations of Elvis Presley, with whom she had been singing backup. “Elvis would make me go into these little cafes and listen to John [on the jukebox] when we played in the south – in the Carolinas and all down through Florida and Georgia,” Carter reportedly said of how she initially became aware of music’s Man In Black.
“I can’t remember anything else we talked about, except his eyes,” she wrote in the liner notes of Cash’s 2000 box set, Love, God, Murder, of their first meeting at the Opry. “Those black eyes that shone like agates… He had a command of his performances that I had never before. Just a guitar and a bass and a gentle kind of presence that made not only me, but whole audiences become his followers.”
Cash remembers telling Carter he had “always wanted to meet her,” and was aware of her through her famous country music family: Her parents were Ezra Carter and Mother Maybelle Carter and June sang and performed as part of the Carter Sisters, a group composed of herself and siblings Helen and Anita.
Both were married to other people at the time of that first fateful meeting. Cash to Vivian Liberto Cash, with whom he had four daughters: Roseanne, Kathy, Cindy and Tara. Carter’s first marriage was to honky-tonk singer Carl Smith and the couple had one daughter, Rebecca. The marriage ended in 1956 and a year later Carter married former footballer Edwin “Rip” Nix. The union produced a daughter, Rozanna “Rosie,” before the couple divorced in 1966.

Carter admits they fell in love when it 'was not convenient' for either of them
Cash and Carter began working together professionally and by the early 1960s were touring with Carter singing backup and as a duet partner. “Ring of Fire,” one Cash’s best-known recordings and a huge 1963 crossover hit was penned by Carter and Merle Kilgore, with Cash as the inspiration according to Carter. “I never talked about how I fell in love with John,” Carter told Rolling Stone in 2000. “It was not a convenient time for me to fall in love with him, and it wasn’t a convenient time for him to fall in love with me. One morning, about four o’clock, I was driving my car just about as fast as I could… I was miserable, and it all came to me: ‘I’m falling in love with somebody I have no right to fall in love with’… I thought, ‘I can’t fall in love with this man, but it’s just like a ring of fire.’”
Cash was struggling with similar feelings at the time, telling Rolling Stone that they had yet to say, “I love you,” to each other: “Because we knew what was going to happen: That eventually we were going to be divorced, and we were going to go through hell. Which we did.”
According to daughter Roseanne, there was already tension in the family home due to Cash’s ongoing battle with alcohol, amphetamine and barbiturate addiction. Cash’s first wife and mom to Roseanne was also worried about her husband straying while on tour. Cash wrote “I Walk the Line” in 1958 about his then-wife’s fidelity fears. “He wrote, ‘I’m gonna stay true,’” Roseanne says in the Ken Burns docu-series Country Music. “Of course that wasn’t true.”
Liberto would begin to suspect her husband of having an affair with Carter, and in 1966 filed for divorce, citing fidelity concerns and his addiction issues as reasons. Cash and Carter were married two years later. “It seemed inevitable, though it was so painful for my mom,” Roseanne said to People in 2019 of Cash and Carter’s relationship.

COUNTRY MUSIC’S GREAT POWER COUPLE
Johnny and June Carter Cash are regarded as one of country music’s greatest power couples. In addition to having their own successful careers, Johnny and June often paired up for performances and toured together throughout their 35-year marriage.
The couple met for the first time on July 7, 1956, when they ran into one another backstage on the day Johnny made his Grand Ole Opry debut.June was also performing that day, after wrapping up a tour with Elvis Presley. While she was out on the road, she became a fan of Johnny’s music, with his single “Walk the Line” being released earlier that summer.
HOW FATE BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER
It turns out Johnny was a big fan of June as well. He had grown up hearing her sing on the radio with her family and popular singing group, The Carter Family.
When the two of them ran into one another backstage, both of them were starstruck, and Johnny reportedly said, “I’ve always wanted to meet you,” to June, and she responded with, “I feel like I know you already.”
June and the entire Carter Family eventually joined Johnny on tour, and performed with him throughout the years. Both Johnny and June ended up divorcing their former spouses, and eventually started a relationship.
AN EXTREMELY PUBLIC PROPOSAL
During a concert on February 22, 1968 in London, Ontario, the couple performed their hit duet “Jackson,” in front of 7,000 fans.
At the conclusion of the performance, Johnny decided to propose to June on stage, asking her in front of the entire crowd if she would marry him.Years later, during an interview on The Mike Douglas Show on March 3, 1981, Johnny recalled the proposal:
“We had just sung a song called Jackson, and I stopped the show, and I said ‘Will you marry me?’ on the microphone. She said ‘sing another, sing another, sing another.’ I said, ‘I’m not going to sing until you answer me. Will you marry me?’…she turned her back, you know, trying to get somebody in the band to play some music or something. Kept going until she finally said ‘yes.'”
TAKING OFF INTO FOREVER
Despite June’s hesitation to accept Johnny’s proposal, the couple didn’t wait long before they officially tied the knot. They were married a week later on March 1, 1968 in Franklin, Kentucky.
The couple welcomed their only child together, John Carter Cash, two years later on March 3, 1970.

Johnny and June remained together for 35 years, up until June’s passing on May 15, 2003. But Johnny didn’t have to experience life without his beloved June for long, as he passed away only four months later, on September 12, 2003.Today, Johnny and June’s legacy and love story lives on in the songs they sang and the stories they shared. In the movie, Ray hated how childlike and wonderous Johnny was. He wanted Johnny to be serious and hardworking like his older brother Jack. This created a wedge between Ray and Johnny, and according to Wide Open Country, Johnny didn't say that his father blamed him per se, but Johnny's daughter Kathy did. In the book, Johnny Cash: The Biography, Kathy Cash said, "Grandpa always kind of blamed Dad for Jack's death. And Dad had this, just real sad guilt thing about him his whole life."

In Walk the Line, Johnny went fishing as Jack stayed behind to do some woodworking in the barn. It wasn't until Johnny was walking home that he saw his dad driving frantically down the road looking for him, saying that something horrible had happened to Jack.
The movie followed real-life as Jack really did have a fatal injury with a table saw and passed away at the age of 14. According to Republic World, Jack lived for about a week after the incident, but in the movie, he only lasted a few hours before passing away in bed, surrounded by his family.
