Fact Check-Clip shows Biden telling Pope Francis story about baseball player Satchel Paige

    By Reuters Fact Check

After U.S. President Joe Biden met with Pope Francis on Oct. 29, social media users pointed to a short clip of their exchange and claimed Biden referred to the Pope as a “famous African-American baseball player.” The posts, however, are missing context: Biden was telling Francis the story of Satchel Paige.

Biden held an unusually long meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican as they exchanged smiles, laughs and gifts ( here ).

“Joe Biden after 75 mins of meeting with Pope ‘You're the famous African-American base ball player in America’,” reads a tweet with the 9-seconds clip that has garnered over 3,900 retweets as of the writing of this article ( here ).

The claim has also been shared on Facebook ( here , here ) and YouTube ( here ).

Most iterations feature the last seconds of a video posted by Catholic television network ETWN (see watermark on right top corner) viewable here timestamp 00:50) in which Biden is seen approaching the Pope and saying “famous African-American baseball player in America.”

Although the first word in Biden sentence is not entirely audible, further video of the scene shows he was telling the story of Satchel Paige, a Black pitcher who joined the Major Leagues in his 40s, in a nod to his and Francis’s ages (78 and 84 respectively), as reported by The New York Times ( here ) and CNN ( here ).

The longer exchange can be seen in a CNN report around timestamp 5:37 ( youtu.be/WroZOfxsXE4?t=337 ).

Biden then says (alongside an Italian interpreter): “Usually, pitchers lose their arms when they’re 35. He pitched a win on his 47th birthday. The press walked into the locker room and said — his name was Satchel Paige — they came in and said, ‘Satch, no one’s ever pitched a win at age 47. How do you feel about pitching a win on your birthday?’ He looked at them and said, ‘Boys, that’s not how I look at age. I look at it this way: How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?’”

“You’re sixty-five and I’m sixty!” Biden says to Francis, and they both laugh.

The White House did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.

Further Reuters reporting about the meeting can be found here.

Video shows Biden telling Pope Francis a story about Satchel Paige

    By The Associated Press

    October 29, 2021

CLAIM: Video shows President Joe Biden telling Pope Francis, “You’re the famous African-American baseball player.”

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. In the full video clip released by the Vatican, Biden was telling Pope Francis a parable about aging, where he referenced American baseball player Satchel Paige, a Black pitcher who played the sport late into his 50s.

THE FACTS: On Friday, Biden met with the pope face to face at the Vatican. Though he had met Francis three times, this was Biden’s first time meeting him as president.

Social media users shared a clip of Biden speaking to Francis with the false claim that it showed the president telling the pope he was a Black baseball player.

“Joe Biden after 75 mins of meeting with Pope ‘You’re the famous African-American base ball player in America,’” a Twitter user wrote, misspelling baseball. The post had more than 3,000 retweets. The false post also circulated on Instagram.

But Biden, 78, was telling a story to Francis, 84, about aging, and how Paige had played baseball late into his life. In a video released by the Vatican, Biden states: “There’s a famous African American baseball player in America.”

Biden quoted Paige as saying, “’How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?”

The private meeting between the two lasted about 75 minutes, according to the Vatican. Biden said that Francis told him he was a “good Catholic” and to continue taking Communion. However, conservatives are calling for him to be denied the sacrament because of his support for abortion rights, The Associated Press reported.

Social Media Buzz: What Biden Told the Pope; the Queen; Roblox

    Bloomberg News

    October 30, 2021, 2:07 PM UTC

Here’s what’s buzzing on social media:

Fact-checkers pounced to debunk a nine-second tweet in which President Joe Biden appeared to call Pope Francis “the famous African-American baseball player.” The two leaders met in the Vatican Friday.

The full version of the clip shows Biden telling the story of U.S. pitcher Satchel Paige, who didn’t play in the major leagues until his 40s, the president said, “because he was black.”

Concerns over the health of Queen Elizabeth prompted reassurance Saturday from U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He said she “seems in very good form.”

Buckingham Palace released a statement Friday that the Queen’s doctors “advised that she should continue to rest for at least the next two weeks.”

Fans of Roblox, the popular gaming platform, blamed an outage that began on Friday on a deal with Chipotle to give away free burritos as part of a Halloween promotion.

Roblox was quick to deny any connection and said it was working to restore service.

The day before Halloween, people were scouring social media for Monster Mash music mixes and “scary movies.”
