    Sam Brinton

Deputy Assistant Secretary for Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition

Sam Brinton serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition (NE-8). In this role, Sam leads NE-8 and oversees its programs including the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology and the Office of Integrated Waste Management. NE-8 manages ongoing research and development related to long-term disposition of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. Current priorities for Sam’s office include evaluating the feasibility of the direct disposal of dual-purpose casks; implementing high burn-up, large scale, long-term, dry storage cask research; and developing a consent-based siting process for consolidated, federal interim storage of spent nuclear fuel.

Sam brings a wealth of experience to this role, having previously served as the first employee of the country's first and only nuclear waste management and disposal start-up company, as well as leading one of the first major national consensus reports on the topic of consent-based siting at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Sam has also worked for think tanks such as the Breakthrough Institute, Clean Air Task Force, and Third Way. Sam holds dual graduate degrees in nuclear science and engineering as well as the Technology Policy Program from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering with a nuclear engineering focus and vocal music performance from Kansas State University. Sam is also a well-known advocate for LGBTQ youth and helped to secure protections against the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy in more than half of the country. They identify as gender-fluid and use the pronouns they, them, and theirs.

After nearly a decade of experience in nuclear policy formation and implementation, Sam is excited to bring their knowledge and passion for nuclear waste as a self-proclaimed #NuclearNerd to the Department of Energy.

    Occupation Nuclear engineer, LGBTQ activist

Samuel Brinton (born c. 1988)[1] is an American nuclear engineer and LGBTQ activist appointed to be the deputy assistant secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy in January 2022.[2] As of 2019, Brinton was the head of advocacy and government affairs at the non-profit LGBTQ youth suicide prevention organization The Trevor Project.[3] Identifying as gender-fluid, Brinton uses and pronouns.[1]

Raised in Perry, Iowa, their parents were Southern Baptist missionaries who disapproved of Brinton's attraction to a male friend from school.[4] Brinton graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering and vocal music. They have a dual Master of Science degree in nuclear engineering, technology and policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[5] Brinton is married.[6] They told they are an animal roleplay enthusiast.[7]

As a youth, Brinton experienced conversion therapy and in a January 2018 New York Times Op-Ed described it as "barbaric" and "painful",[8] and with the Trevor Project, founded the #50Bills50States campaign to have the practice banned.[9] Calling themself a survivor of conversion therapy, Brinton was the first of such individuals to testify before the United Nations Convention against Torture regarding the practice in November 2014.[10]

In 2016, Brinton was a senior policy analyst for the Bipartisan Policy Center, lobbying for updated regulations so nuclear waste can be used to power advanced nuclear reactors.[11] In February 2020, the website of Deep Isolation, a Berkeley, California, nuclear waste storage and disposal company,[12] listed them as its Director of Legislative Affairs.[13]

Yahoo! Lifestyle noted that Brinton "may be the first openly gender-fluid person in federal government leadership" after they were selected by the Biden administration to be the deputy assistant secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy for the Department of Energy in January 2022.[9]

Viral social media posts claim that President Joe Biden has hired a drag queen to head up the Department of Energy’s nuclear waste issues efforts.

If this is what’s in charge of nuclear waste issues in the Biden Administration, it should start with itself.

These claims are largely true. Sam Brinton became deputy assistant secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Energy Department’s Office of Nuclear Energy in January 2022. Before joining the Department of Energy, Brinton was most famous as an gender non-binary activist, and made headlines for wearing a gender-fluid outfit to the 2018 Academy Awards ceremony. The picture accompanying some of the posts is Brinton in the Academy Awards outfit.

The Daily Mail reported that Brinton was a member of a drag queen group called the Order of Perpetual Indulgence, including a picture from Brinton’s Instagram account showing Brinton at a Sisters of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence event.

The Department of Energy told the Washington Examiner that while Brinton was being considered for a career appointment, the role is not a political appointment. So, while Brinton is joining the Department of Energy, Brinton is not a “Biden nominee” as some have claimed.

The Department of Energy told The Dispatch Fact Check that Brinton’s position is “not an appointment through the Biden-Harris administration,” but that it was “unable to comment on any additional personnel matters related to that post at the moment.”
