is the seventh studio album by American rock band Counting Crows, released on September 2, 2014[2] in the United States through Capitol Records, and on September 15, 2014 in the UK, through Virgin EMI. It is available on CD, vinyl and as a digital download. The album is the band's first album of original material in six years since 2008's .

The album marks the band's first release on Capitol Records. After parting with original label Geffen Records of 18 years in 2009, the band released two live albums and a studio album of cover songs independently. While touring in the "Outlaw Roadshow," a traveling festival show sponsored by the band in part with the music blog , the band began to write new material. After recording independently, they shopped the album around to eight or nine labels and finally signed with Capitol.[3]

    Background and recording[edit]

Writing of material for the new album began early in 2013 and continued during that year's summer tour.[4] Duritz explained in concert that "God of Ocean Tides" was the first new song he'd written in years, and was inspired by leaving Nashville on their tour bus at two in the morning.[5]

    Metacritic 74/100[6]

Review scores Source Rating AllMusic [1] [7] [8]

has received mostly positive feedback from music critics. At Metacritic, they assign a "weighted average" rating out of 100 to selected independent ratings and reviews from mainstream critics, and the album has received a Metascore of a 74, based on 10 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews."[6]

Fred Thomas of AllMusic rates the album four stars, calling "Somewhere Under Wonderland distinctively Counting Crows. Duritz's raspy voice and lucid, lyrical stories always hold just a hint of desperation, and even decades into a staggered career, these new tunes can’t help but feel like part of a larger narrative that began during the band’s '90s glory days but finds further, greater refinement here."[1] In a three stars review on behalf of , Jon Dolan writes how "Adam Duritz is still the same dreadlocked dreamer you remember from the Nineties, channeling Van Morrison, R.E.M. and Bruce Springsteen into word-zonked ballads that reference Jackie-O., Elvis, Johnny Appleseed and more."[7] Helen Brown of calls the album "their best collection of songs since their debut."[8]

The Followup We've Been Waiting For

Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2014

After taking some time away from original music to put out Underwater Sunshine, the Counting Crows are back with a new album. While Sunshine was fun at first, it was an unfortunate reminder, every time you listened to it, that it was not really CC music. It just made you wish for new stuff from Adam and the gang.

Wonderland is the album we've been waiting for from Counting Crows ever since Recovering the Satellites, and is so much more in step with the tone of Satellites and its predecessor August and Everything After than the often maligned albums in between. Whereas Hard Candy and This Desert Life provided a couple of catchy tunes in each playlist surrounded by sub-par, tonal-challenged riffs, Wonderland is a complete album from start to finish. Every song feels like it fits and every progression along the tracks feels like the next step of a journey. The emotion is all there. The brilliant, thought provoking, mind-melting lyrics are all there, accompanied by that piano-tickled, accordian-splashed, guitar-infused sound that made so many of us fall in love with Counting Crows so many years ago.

Absolutely Amazing - their best work in almost 20 years.

This is, easily, the best Counting Crows album since Recovering the Satellites. No question.

Here's the breakdown, along with my point rating (1-10 points, 10 being the best).

    1) "Palisades Park" - At over 8 minutes long, this is the most ambitious song the band has done in quite a long time. It sort of recalls "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby", but with more dynamic range. With the sax, the song starts out sounding similar to "Chelsea" (the hidden track on the live album "Across a Wire"), but it soon careens all over the place, with slower parts, up-tempo parts, and lyrics that tell a fascinating story. Not my favorite on the album, but certainly way up there, and better than any single from a Counting Crows album since "A Long December". 8/10

    2) "Earthquake Driver" - Bouncy, up-tempo song where Adam sings about fame and his decidedly mixed feelings about his musical ambitions. I have no idea what an "earthquake driver" is, but he uses it as a metaphor for stardom. In that sense, it's kind of a more folksy "Mr. Jones", in terms of theme. I struggle with whether to give this one an 8 or a 9, but I think the intentional abstraction in the lyrics merits more of an 8. (You'll see that a lot on this album. I'm not a big fan of the technique, but the songs themselves make up for it.) 8/10.
