Did you know that, according to The Global Economy, over 80% of people in the US aged 15 or older had a debit card in 2017? The global average was 44.4%, with the country with the most debit cards being used in 2017 being the Netherlands at over 98%.
If you’re one of the many Americans who use a debit card and you want to rent a car, you might be looking for car rentals that accept debit cards.
Having done some of your research already, you might be feeling frustrated about the fact that many rental car companies only accept debit cards.
Fortunately, it is possible to rent a car with a debit card. In this article, we’ll review what car companies accept debit cards and what their policies are.
Finally, you can rent a car and get on the road. Read on to learn more.
Advantage Car Rentals
One of the companies that accept a car rental payment with a debit card is Advantage Car Rentals. This car rental company, which has been around since 1984, is available through Hertz and is a subsidiary of E-Z Rent-A-Car.
They accept both post- and pre-rental payments with your debit card.
However, you have to make sure that you have enough funds in your debit account so that you can pay for both the rental and the security deposit (which is a maximum of $350).
There are limitations when it comes to the type of debit card you can use, as it has to be a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover card.
Additional requirements you’ll have to provide to rent with your debit card include proof of insurance, a copy of your most recent paystub, a copy of your most recent utility bill, a valid charge card, and a valid driver’s license.
Dollar Car Rental
Another debit card car rental company is Dollar Car Rental. However, the debit card has to have a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover logo, and your reservation has to be made at least 24 hours before you take out the rental car.
There aren’t any credit checks, and you can use your debit card to rent luxury, convertible, and premium cars.
Additional requirements you’ll have to provide to rent with your debit card include proof of your return ticket that corresponds to your rental location and time, an additional form of identification, and a valid driver’s license.
Budget Car Rental
Depending on what location you’re in, Budget Car Rental policies when you pay with a debit card vary. At most locations, you should expect to provide three identification forms. Additionally, the company is likely to ask for an authorization hold on your debit account.
This is to cover any unexpected charges on your debit card. Requirements at Budget Car Rental companies based in airports when you pay with a debit card include:
A copy of your most recent utility bill
A valid card for auto insurance
An authentic U.S. passport or U.S. military I.D.
The tickets for your travel itinerary
Your driver’s license
If you go to a Budget Car Rental company that isn’t based in an airport, then the requirements when you pay with a debit card include a copy of your current utility bill, proof of insurance, your authentic U.S. passport or U.S. military I.D., and your driver’s license.
Enterprise Rent A Car
One of the biggest benefits of renting a car with a debit card through Enterprise Rent A Car is that they don’t require you to get a credit check. In addition to many United States mainland locations accepting debit cards, those in Puerto Rico do, too.
However, if you go to an Enterprise Rent A Car in Canada, you can only pay with a debit card at branches not located in airports.
The requirements when you pay with a debit card usually include proof of insurance, a copy of your most recent paystub, your referees, a minimum deposit in addition to the rental cost, and two of your most recent utility bills.
However, keep in mind that these requirements vary between different Enterprise Rent A Car locations. Call beforehand to see what’s required of you before renting a car from them.
Sixt Rent A Car
Founded in Germany in 1912, this car rental company will accept debit card payments for rental cards without a credit card check as long as you meet specific requirements. These include two official identification forms and a valid driver’s license.
Additionally, you must provide two of your most recent utility bills if you’re an in-state customer. If you’re an out-of-state customer, you need to provide proof of tickets related to your itinerary that go along with your car rental schedule.
Hertz Rent A Car
When you use a debit card to rent a car through Hertz Rent A Car, it has to have a MasterCard, Visa, or Discover logo and has to draw funds in an instant from your account. You also need to provide two different forms of identification.

Want to rent a car with a debit card? See which rental companies let you rent a car without a credit card and special conditions applied.
If you want to rent a car or have rented in the past, you already know most rental companies require a credit card in the renter’s name at the moment of pick-up. However, not everyone has a credit card in their name. What can you do if that’s your case?
Can you rent a car with a debit card?
Short answer: yes. While it’s not always as easy as renting a car with a credit card, using a debit card is allowed by most of the major car rental companies.
Debit card car rental extra requirements
Please note that while renting a car with a debit card is permitted, some conditions may apply. The car rental company may require one or more documents in addition to the usual car rental requirements, like:
Utility bills (like a water or gas bill, one or more)
Proof of insurance (as credit cards usually provide their own insurance and debit cards don’t)
Personal references (contact information of one or more people to verify your personal information, such as name and address)
Return travel ticket from the drop-off location
Extra identification in addition to your driver’s license (like a valid US passport)
Most recent paycheck stub
Other than that, the rental company may also do a credit check and only accept debit cards from specific credit card networks, like VISA, MasterCard or others.
Why is renting a car with a debit card harder?
The list of extra requirements above is quite scary, right? But why are rental companies making it harder to rent with a debit instead of a credit card?
Basically, when rental companies let you rent with a debit card, they’re assuming a greater risk. With the credit card information, the rental supplier can charge for extras like parking tickets, fines and little scratches even when the driver is not present. But that isn’t possible with a debit card, as the PIN number is required to make any charges.
That means that if the rental company receives a parking ticket after you’ve returned the car, for example, it’s much harder to charge that from you as they can’t just use the credit card info.
Keep in mind that the credit card is not only used to pay for your rental car, but also for a credit hold, also known as a security deposit. The rental company may ask for a deposit anyway, but when using debit the money won’t be available for you to use with travel expenses, for example. This is an important thing to remember.
What is better: renting a car with a credit card or with a debit card?
Generally speaking, if you own a credit card, go with credit. Using a debit card may be easier for some people, but, seeing as you have to provide more documents and personal information, it seems like using a debit card isn’t a good deal after all.
If you still feel like a debit card is the best option for you, check the list below to see which extra documentation is required by some of the most popular rental companies in the US.

If you’ve rented a car in the past, you already know that most rental car companies require you to use a credit card in the renter’s name when you pick up the vehicle. However, many people don’t have or want a credit card, so it’s helpful to know which car rental companies accept debit cards. Find out which rental car companies take debit cards and learn about their requirements to enjoy a stress-free travel experience.
Avis Car Rental Debit Card Policy
Avis accepts debit cards without extensive paperwork like other rental companies. Avis will even accept prepaid gift or debit cards as forms of payment at some locations when you return the car.
Make sure to contact the rental office directly to see specific location policies regarding payment. Keep these restrictions in mind:
You must be 25 years of age per their company policy.
You must have enough money in the account linked to your Visa or Mastercard debit card at the time that you pick up your rental. Otherwise, Avis will put a hold on the funds in your account.
Avis requires credit card only payment on certain premium model vehicles. Accepted credit cards include Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, China Union Pay, Diners Club International, Discover, GE Capital, JCB, and Sears cards.
Budget Car Rental Debit Card Policy
Budget accepts credit cards, debit cards, or cash when you drop off your rental. However, only some locations will allow you to pay with a debit card at the time that you pick up a vehicle. You can clarify any questions regarding their payment policy for a specific location by calling in advance.
Dollar Debit Card Policy
Dollar stands out as another top-rated rental service that accepts debit card payments. They recently changed their policy so that customers only need their debit card and driver’s license to pay after booking with them 24 hours in advance.
Even if you don’t book 24 hours in advance, you can still pay with a debit card. However, in this circumstance, you’ll need another form of ID in addition to your driver’s license, as well as a return travel ticket (airline or cruise) with an itinerary that coincides with your rental dates.
Dollar is also one of the few car rental agencies that accepts cash. To do so, you should plan ahead and pre-qualify for a Cash Deposit Identification Card. The application process takes approximately 30 days to complete. Applying for the Cash Deposit ID card comes with a $30 fee to offset the cost of a credit check.
If you prefer to pay with a credit card, Dollar accepts American Express, MasterCard, Carte Blanche, Diners Club, Discover, JCB, Visa, and China Union Pay.
Enterprise Debit Card Policy
Enterprise accepts debit cards for customers renting a car at one of their airport locations. To pay, you need your debit card (Visa, Mastercard, and Discover) and proof of an outgoing flight at the Enterprise location where you plan to drop off the car.
With that said, Enterprise has strict policies for renting with a debit card at a non-airport location, which can vary from place to place. You may need to show proof of insurance or current utility bills, as well as provide personal references. You can find out the payment policy at a specific location by contacting Enterprise directly with questions.
Enterprise does not accept cash payments, but they do accept the following credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCP (Japan Credit Bureau).
Hertz Debit Card Policy
Although Hertz accepts Visa or Mastercard debit cards when you return your rental, you must have a credit card when you pick up your car in order to put down a security deposit. Payment options for this rental service include Hertz Charge Card, American Express, Visa, Mastercard, or Diners Club card to make your deposit. Hertz only accepts cash in certain circumstances, like booking through an insurance company.
