How the expanded Buddy feature works.

Pokémon Go Buddy Adventure is a huge update to one of the game's earliest features.

As before, you can select a Buddy to join you and earn Candy as you explore, but now, your chosen Pokémon will appear on the map, can aid you in battle, and be played with and fed in AR mode.

As with the Friendship system, you can develop a relationship with your Buddy over time - giving you a series of rewards as you become more and more attentive.

What does Buddy Adventure allow you to do in Pokémon Go?

Once you reach Trainer level 2, Buddy Adventure introduces a series of new activities and benefits:

You can play with and feed berries to your Buddy in AR mode

Your Buddy will follow you on the map screen

Increasing your Buddy level unlocks a range of perks, including additional aid during the catch phase, a CP boost, and finding items

Up to three players can share the same AR space with their Pokémon to take a picture

As before, walking a set distance (1km, 3km, 5km or 20km, depending on the rarity) will earn you Candy, and this still works outside of the Buddy system - meaning you don't have to have them on the map in 'Adventure' mode for this to work, in case you forget to fed them regularly.

You can also swap between multiple Buddies (up to 20) per day, allowing you to earn the above perks across multiple Pokémon.

How to play with and feed your Buddy in Pokémon Go

Let's start with the basics. To play with your Buddy in Pokémon Go, make sure you're first Trainer Level 2 and have a Buddy assigned, then tap the Buddy icon in the lower left corner of the screen, next to your Trainer Profile.

Next, press the Play! button. Your phone camera will then activate. If you are in AR mode, you must find a flat surface. Point towards it until yellow footprints appear, then tap.

If it then says you are too close to your Buddy, back away a step or two, and it should appear.

If you're struggling, remember you can disable AR mode in the Settings, so the Pokémon will simply appear on the screen.

With the Pokémon visible, you can play by rubbing it. You can also feed it by tapping the Berry icon.

Unlike during the catch phase where berries are simply tapped, on the Buddy screen they must be thrown like a Poké Ball to your Buddy's mouth. You don't lose your Berry if you miss however, so keep trying!

Once they are fully fed, they will join you on an Adventure, where they can start earning Hearts for that day...

How to walk with your Buddy on the map and go on an Adventure in Pokémon Go

To earn hearts from your Buddy from certain activities - such as walking or battling together - they need to be visible on the map screen in 'Adventure' mode. They will then walk, fly or roll with you as you explore for a limited time.

To make them appear on the map screen, you have to make sure they are fully fed.

How to complete "Battle alongside your buddy while its adventuring with you"?

    ✓ Answered

So, I've spun this quest while my buddy was already adventuring with me. I did a gym battle (quit after the first win) and a rocket grunt battle. In both battles, I've battled with my buddy. And yet I'm unable to finish this quest. What do I have to do?

While asking questions about the game is always okay on the Road, please consider asking very simple questions in our weekly Questions&Answers Megathread.

This will make it either easier for other people with the same question to find the answer they are looking for or for mods to remove the thread if it isn't needed anymore.

In another thread they said only team leaders or pvp count

    16 level 2 kingladyslayer · 5 days ago Australasia

This is the correct answer. I tried every other method available as I didn’t want enter the battle section yet to claim my end of season stardust. So I tried a gym battle, rocket battle and even a pvp battle against a person in my friend list and none of them worked. When I claimed my end of season dust when I was ready to use a star piece and went to battle one of the team leaders the quest completed.

I was able to complete this task yesterday by battling against a team leader and immediately quitting the match (since this counts as a tie).

I tried this and it worked out

    1 level 2 pgoyoda · 20 hr. ago

i battled against cliff and won.

you're saying finishing the battle and beating the leader doesn't count as completing the task? that's really messed up

    1 level 1 felthouse · 5 days ago

I got it this morning, hadn't a clue what to do with it, battled a grunt, it didn't complete so I trashed it.

Perhaps try a trainer battle, if that doesn't work you may have to compete in the GBL.

Got this quest. Text is confusing. Guessed that whatever the actual requirements are would be not worth the reward. Trashed it

    1 level 2 vandragon7 · 2 days ago

Completed it and got a… (DRUM ROLL!) … 2 star venonat. Smh 🤦🏼‍♀️

I had the same issue. Then I tried to use my buddy in a battle, I mean, fighting with him, not just put it at the party, and the task got completed. The reward is a venonat thought :S

    1 level 2 Sigmingra · 4 days ago

I have the exact same problem and was just curious what the reward would be. Thanks!

    1 level 1 Zachary328 · 4 days ago

I just battled a team leader and completed the task.

    1 level 2 pgoyoda · 20 hr. ago

i beat a team leader and got nothing.

    1 level 1 brid_ger · 3 days ago

I battled my friend and that worked.

    1 level 1 AnaMae62 · 3 days ago

Go back to the trainers and battle with your buddy and win 👌🏻

    1 level 1 Randombean217 · 2 days ago · edited 2 days ago
