Police Identify Teens Involved in Fatal Crash in Commack

    NBC Universal, Inc.

A tragic accident took the life of a Long Island high school senior and left her friends injured. Pei-Sze Cheng reports.

A 17-year-old girl died in a devastating crash involving the Mustang she was riding in and a Jeep Wrangler on Long Island, police say. Two other teenagers were badly hurt.

Police on Thursday identified the victim who died in the mid-afternoon crash on Indian Head Road in Commack Wednesday as Isabel Carella, of Smithtown. They say she was a passenger in the 2008 Ford Mustang that slammed into a Jeep near Carldon Road after the 17-year-old Ford driver swerved to avoid another car and lost control.

The Mustang driver, who lives in Kings Park, was taken to a hospital and was in intensive care after the crash. A second passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car, suffering serious injuries. A third passenger suffered less serious injuries and was also taken to a hospital for treatment. Those two passengers, 16- and 17-year-old boys, were in the back seats.

Carella was in the front seat, and died on impact.

Suffolk County police say the 19-year-old woman driving the Jeep Wrangler that got hit endured injuries that weren't believed to be life-threatening. She was also taken to a hospital for treatment but is expected to recover. Footage from the scene showed the Jeep's front smashed and much of the body of the vehicle appear wrecked.

Police say their investigation is ongoing, but they do not suspect any criminality.

"The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be distraction on the part of the operator of the Mustang, but we have no indication speed was a factor at this time," said Det. Lt. Michael Crowley.

COMMACK, Long Island (WABC) -- A Long Island community is in mourning after a 17-year-old high school student was killed and several classmates injured in a crash Wednesday.

Suffolk County police say four teenagers who all attended Kings Park High School were in 2008 Ford Mustang traveling north on Indian Head Road in Commack around 3:45 p.m. when the driver swerved to avoid another vehicle and lost control.

The Mustang struck a Jeep Wrangler traveling on the opposite side of the road.

A female passenger in the Mustang, 17-year-old Isabel Carella, from Smithtown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mustang, 17-year-old Dominic Crocitto, from Kings Parks, was transported to Stony Brook University with serious injuries, as were the two rear passengers, 16-year-old Joesph Gilbiino and 17 year-old Liam Freely.

The driver of the Jeep, 19-year-old Annalise Wilkes, of Commack, was also transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Carella was a senior who loved to dance, and she was set to graduate next week.

She was on a dance competition team at the Sara Jean Dance Company in Smithtown, and her coach, Sara Jean Hass, called her death a devastating loss.

"Yesterday was actually our last practice for the seniors, and it was our senior goodbye," she said. "And it's actually quite devastating that we didn't get to give her her items."

Kings Park schools superintendent Timothy Eagen sent a letter to the families informing them of the crash and offering support to students.

"The Kings Park High School has a Crisis Intervention Team made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this," he wrote. "Several of our district psychologists and additional mental health personnel will be available at KPHS tomorrow and throughout the rest of the week, for any student who may need or want help or any type of assistance surrounding this terrible incident. We will be utilizing the Counseling Center inside the building, as well as the area outside the building adjacent the grass soccer field for staging and support. We are here and ready to support each and every student in need."
