I would use the SUVAT equation

V^2 = U^2 + 2as

Where u is the initial velocity 20 m/s and s is the distance 40m. The final velocity v is 0.

Simplify to.. a = -U^2/2s = -400/(2*40) = -5 m/s^2

negative tells you its in the opposite direction to the initial velocity U which is positive.

The car in this case will undergo a negative acceleration. The acceleration is solved by using the formula of (0^2- v^2) = 2 * a * d where v = 20 m/s; a = ? , d = 40 m. Solving for the value of the acceleration a

(0^2- v^2) = 2 * a * d

0 - 20^2 = 2 * a * 40

-400 = a * 80 a = -400 / 80 a = -5 m/s^2 Steve Johnson

The change of velocity is simple.

If we can find the time to come to a stop,

acceleration = (change of velocity) / time.

We have to assume that the acceleration is constant thru the stop.

Therefore calculation of the average velocity is done the simple, arithmetic way.

At that average velocity, what would be the time to go 40 m?

Or instead, there is a suvat formula (or 2) to give it to you.

The average speed is 10m/s, and it travels 40m → it takes 4 seconds.

Losing 20m/s in 4 seconds is 5m/s per second deceleration.

Car came to stop in 40 meters its intial velocity is 20m/s and the final velocity is zero.

a(acceleration)= (0-(20m/s)^2)/80m =-(400m^2/s^2)/80m = -5m/s^2

the neg sign indicates that the car is deccelerating.

A car accelerates from 20 m/s to 40m/s in 10 seconds. What is the distance traveled by the car during the 10 seconds?

The distance traveled by the car is calculated by using the formula of d = ut + 1/2 at^2.

Solving for the acceleration a

a = (v - u) / t

a = (40 m/s - 20 m/s) / 10 s

a = 20 m/s / 10 s a = 2 m/s^2

Solving for the distance traveled

d = ut + 1/2 at^2.

d = 20 m/s * 10 s + 1/2 ^ 2m/s^2 * (10 s)^2

d = 200 m + 1 m/s^2 * 100 s^2

d = 200 m + 100 m d = 300 m

The distance traveled by the car during the 10 seconds is 300 m.
