I would use the SUVAT equation

V^2 = U^2 + 2as

Where u is the initial velocity 20 m/s and s is the distance 40m. The final velocity v is 0.

Simplify to.. a = -U^2/2s = -400/(2*40) = -5 m/s^2

negative tells you its in the opposite direction to the initial velocity U which is positive.
